To those knowledgable about baseball rules (Oedi?)- who makes the call for WP or PB |
|
Is it the umpire, or is it the official scorekeeper?

4. No, me and a poster from another board were musing about it and were not sure |
|
Boof had a WP, clearly a WP but we just wanted to know who it was that makes that call.

Lotta times when you've got a game on, you can hear the call in the press box — kind of an echo-y "Wild pitch" or "Passed ball." That's the official scorer on the press box PA.
Did you know the stadium announcer is also an official part of the game? Technically, a pinch-hitter, pinch-runner or whatever isn't officially in the game until the announcer announces him. Once the plate umpire makes the change on his lineup card, he'll tell the PA guy to make the announcement. I dunno if they use the ump phone for that or if the ump just signals it.
One night when I was filling in for the PA guy at a minor league game, the visiting team pinch-hit somebody who wasn't on the roster. The plate ump pointed up at me to announce him, and all I could do was stand up, hold out my arms and shake my head. The ump just waved back like, "Ah, the hell with it."
Life in the minors. :)
