Listen to this absolute horror story.
I was playing bunco last night at my friend Cindy's. She is a registered nurse who works in a local pediatrician's office. Well, turns out a neighbor's child has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and we were all expressing how awful it was.

Cindy then starts to go on about how no one should ever go near the new local hospital because it is severely understaffed. I myself was there in September and I thought it was more than fine; Mr. Midlo was there for his CHF and when his defibrillator was implanted.

Turns out the maternity ward is shockingly understaffed. A woman was in there recently and the nurse in the room dropped the table in anticipation of the baby's birth. The mom started throwing up, which is very common, and the hurse went to give her an emesis basin.

In the process of throwing up, the baby was born and since no one was there to catch him, fell to the floor. He's now on a ventilator.

I am still shocked about this.

Oh, and I won $20

7. I know. Isn't that horrible?
Apparently, and IIRC, this is true, when the baby is ready to be born and you start pushing, there have to be at least two people in the room. The nurse shouldn't have dropped the table until someone else came in. If she hadn't, the baby would have just been born on the table.

So incredibly sad.

2. Good lord.
I could have done without that story today. Although it's my own fault for opening a thread with "listen to this horror story" as the title. :D

Also, WTF is bunco??

5. It's a drinking game built around dice.

It's a dice game. 12 people in the group; we rotate houses once a month. It's an excuse to get out of the house and leave the kids behind for a light game and refreshments.

And, I know how you feel. WHen I heard the story last night, I wanted to throw up.

4. I hope the hospital has fixed that problem now.
It doesnt take too many horror stories before people just wont go to that hospital anymore.

Even well staffed hospitals have accidents, but that sounds like out and out neglectful care !!! How old is the baby?

10. Increasingly deplorable conditions in hospitals are why I don't think I'm gonna have kids.
I'm not cut out for home birth for various reasons and I would never want to be in the situation that poor family is now in.

11. This is why if I have another kid I'm going to DIY it.
Before we even get into the staffing issue, what kind of barbaric throwback retards still have women deliver in the lithotomy position?

Fuck that.

for the pain meds. I was induced twice and couldn't take the pain without the epidural.

Of course, with my youngest, it didn't take, so I was tethered to a bed with no way to get relief. Fortunately, it was a pretty easy birth.

12. Holy shit that's awful!
Where was the emesis basin? One would hope that it was nearby, and that it only took a few seconds to retrieve. But for a baby to be born in the space of a few seconds is a remarkably sad turn of luck in this case.

I hate that story!

15. Not sure. Additionally, a friend of TM's dad was there
for some cardiac work and when the nurse removed the central line, he stroked out. She did it incorrectly. Gah.

Fortunately, he's okay. That poor baby, not so.
