What are some CDs you have gotten this year?
Edited on Thu Apr-24-08 09:56 PM by mvd
Some of mine, with grades:

R.E.M. - Accelerate (A)
Sheryl Crow - Detours (A)
Ashlee Simpson - Bittersweet World (B; I know, I'm ashamed, this is pure product - but it's more fun than her other two CDs)
The Weepies - Hideaway (A+; their best and most beautiful)
Kathleen Edwards - Asking For Flowers (A-)
Marie Digby - Unfold (A)
Phantom Planet - Raise The Dead (A)
Paddy Casey - Addicted To Company Part I (A-)
Paula Frazer And Tarnation - Now It's Time (A-; great folk music - a similarity in sound is its only weakness)

2. I bought these on Wednesday
múm - Yesterday was dramatic - today is OK
múm - Summer make good
múm - Finally we are no one

Really wonderful atmospheres they create.

I admit, I took advantage of the exchange rate - 1 Australian dollar can buy roughly 94 US cents, it's far cheaper to buy abroad than on these shores. For some reason I feel guilty, maybe I shouldn't.

8. Mine:

The Decemberists - The Crane Wife (B) Solid effort, would have scored higher except I realized I don't like their style. I bought it based on a recommendation from a friend.

The Shins - Wincing The Night Away. (A-) Honestly, this one and the next CD...I think I'm the only person who liked it. I loved it.

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky. (A) My best purchase of the year. Maybe not the best album I bought, but utilitarian. I can listen to it anytime, any mood.

Against Me! - New Wave. (C+) The grade may be misleading. It really deserves a A+ for half the CD and a D for the other half. Part of the CD is genius (Thrash Unreal, White People For Peace) and a larger part (Stop!, The Ocean) is pure shit.

Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose. (A+) Saying you like RAR is like saying that you like Pearl Jam's Ten or Nirvana's Nevermind. It's their seminal CD. Thus, instead I'm going to say I listen to this CD when I feel like gutpunching Dick Cheney. The sentiment is the same really.

Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary. (B) I refuse to justify this purchase. I wanted it, I bought it. I know it's emo. I don't fucking care.

Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static. (B+) I dare you to hate this CD. Also, it seems to be the perfect background music for kinky sex. Who knew? Jack Johnson will get you laid.

I bought more CDs than this...I'm just done with music criticism for the moment.

11. Same here
My grades for The Decemberists and Against Me! would be higher, though. The Wilco deserves an A-.

13. Whoo boy...
Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things (I love you Jenny Lewis!) (A+) I got their new album but haven't listened to it yet. They are teh awesome. Great rock music with an amazing female vocalist.

Silent Hill 4 - Original Soundtrack (A) Eerily beautiful, powerful, and emotional. The game itself was absurdly difficult, but the story behind it was awesome and the music here is perfect for it. Very emotional.

Prefuse 73 - Preparations. (B+) He is the shit. A must for fans of mix tape wizards, like DJ Shadow. My only complaint is that there's not as much vocal stuff on this one as on his previous work...I miss his work with Aesop Rock, El-P, and such.

Boards of Canada - The Camphire Headphase (A) This is for you, if you are into moody and ambient music. It's just plain fantastic stuff.

New Pornographers - Challenger (B+) They're always good. Especially when Neko Case is doing vocals. I love them, and I love her.

Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (A) - Awesome folky type music, and her voice is incredible. You'll fall in love with it.

El-P - I'll Sleep When You're Dead (A+++) - Fucking amazing album, powerful. This is rap as it was meant to be.

14. "Detours"
is an awesome CD, I love it..I also bought Alicia Keys...and I think it's ok. I think I need to listen to it more. On the first few listens, I wasn't overly impressed. I do love her a lot though.
