So...I spent 7 hours researching in the archives today...
I was using my camera 'cause some of the documents were too fragile to photocopy. Anyway, just happened upon this...

September, 1914.

2. what are you researching?
what archives are you using?

I'm fascinated by primary source materials... and not only the materials, but how they were made.

6. Hi RainDog...
...nothing esoteric...working on an article examining evolution of issues covered in SDA periodiacals in response to "Espionage Act," "Sedition Act," etc. during period 1914-1918.

I've been using the hardcopy archives at PUC (Pacific Union College) to fill in blanks in their General Conference's online archive.

I agree with ya'...primary sources are great, and excellent for close-reading. :hi:

What sparks your interest in documents?

8. I work with archives
and rare books, when I get lucky. applying for jobs in the area elsewhere. I did an online exhibition of "cheap" literature from the Victorian era from an excellent collection - a top collector in Victorian ephemera. one of the thrills of my life was when I was helping a patron (online) answer a question about papers from a general who served Napoleon. One letter, written pre-Napoleon, of course, talked about the agitation in the street after Charlotte Corday murdered Marat. That moment inspired this painting-

The areas I've concentrated on are history of the book, book as a physical object - how they are constructed, etc., art books, livres d'artistes (these are two diff. things) the Ghent-Bruges school of illuminated books, and Brit/French 19th c./ early 20th c. I may not stay in academia, tho. who knows at this point. depends on what's out there. I may end up leading story hours for 2 yr olds.

I've worked in closed stacks... those library situations in which a page has to bring you a book, rather than being able to browse collections. It thrills me to literally touch the past.. books that were sewn together in a guild shop, with paper made from another guild shop...

7. I'm showing that to my husband.
Our five year old must be the pickiest eater ever. I don't know how he survives. Our almost four year old twins will eat almost anything you put in front of them.
