6. Gonna use it to start doing something that will hopefully pay for itself. :) |
|
In this case, I figured I'd combine my love of makin' stuff with my musical ability and dabble in making/modifying electric guitars. I figure for my first project I'll mod my own bass so I'll just buy the electronic parts (and knobs that go up to 11) for that, and if it goes well, then I'll start buying bodies and necks to make guitars with and/or cheap guitars/basses to mod.
I think for my bass I'll go with my 'geektar' idea, where I'll replace the pick guard with circuit board, and add a bunch of knobs and switches and if I can figure out how to deliver power to them properly, some LEDs and stuff. :)
The way I was planning on doing it would have two possible options... one with more knobs, and one with more switches. Or I could go all out and combine the two ways of doing it and have an equal amount of knobs and switches. And since I still haven't decided whether I'm gonna go for 2 or 3 pickups, I'm not even sure how many of each there'll be. :P
And after that I still have to decide on a name for it... I'm thinking either 'geektar' or 'nerdcore'.

17. Use it to pay my taxes. |
|
Does anyone else remember the 'rebate' checks they sent out in what was it, 2000, - 2001...? At the end of the year the amount of the rebate was calculated as part of the total either owed us or owed the IRS on the annual return. So, if they'd given you $200 in 'rebates' and you normally would have gotten $400 back after taxes, you only got $200. It was really just a loan against your taxes designed to stimulate the economy with more immediate purchases. That notion that the government might actually be giving us money is something of an illusion.
So after I get out of hot water with the IRS, and make one or two minor purchases, I plan to put the lot of mine into a high interest account. Call be boring.

SO makes an excellent point -- this is an advance on next year's return -- not free money. If you typically owe taxes (as opposed to typically getting a return), my best advice is put this in a 9 month certificate so you'll have it for next years tax payment.
Good reminder!
edited to change pay taxes (which we all do) to owe taxes (which about half of us do)

In one hand and out the other.
And the county government is facing huge tax shortfalls too, so it's not like those dollars are going to be increasing any "consumer confidence" where I live.

23. Well, that's just the point, isn't it? |

I don't know what fantasy world the shrub lives in, but most people aren't going to be spending the money frivolously. It isn't going to make a damn bit of difference to anybody, not six months from now, not next year. However the one argument I hear consistently from repugs against Democrats is that "the Democrats will raise taxes." To those idiots, the stimulus check might be enough to persuade them to vote for McSame. Ugh! (slaps forehead) Jeebus.

24. I'd bitch about it but I could really use the extra $600 right now |
|
but like you said - it isn't going to do anything to stimulate the economy. I've racked up some credit card bills and I can get 3 of them paid off with that money. Leaving me with just the big 2 left (I'm still in 4 digits with what I owe, so I'm not too panicked). I was told the best way to get your bills paid off is to get rid of the little ones first. That way you can focus all those $25-$50 payments into the major one. After this rebate I'll have all the small ones done and figured I can get enough of the big ones paid off so by tax time next year I can be pretty much debt free.
