Family dogs who try to eat the family bird
Edited on Fri Apr-25-08 06:43 PM by brentspeak
Ever had this happen in your household?

Many years ago, our dog made the attempt, but my mom caught him just in time. "Aaaaagh!" Dog released the poor parakeet, who flew all the way across the house to hide.

1. My college roommate's lab ate our parakeet.
He adopted us (found him in a parking lot, totally tame), and was a great little bird. One chomp from that stupid lab...

2. with a lot of breeds
especially hunting dogs, and working dogs like huskies that have "wolf" not too far back in their bloodline, the hunting urge is just too much. Though, I will say, our Siberian Husky has never bothered our chinchilla, and he only plays with the cat (who plays back)

11. Terriers would probably harrass the chincilla
Our dog was a terrier, and also gave my little sister's gerbils a rough time.

13. yeah, they're bred to go after small animals
that's why people should be VERY careful about choosing a breed.

3. I knew a Chessie who killed his guardian's partner's chinchilla
about a year ago. There was a little tension in THAT household for a while!

20. Sorry. Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
I have several friends with these dogs, so I forget that others may not be familiar. They're great dogs!

6. Did they try to eat them, or just kill and leave them?
Just curious.

5. One of our greyhounds and our Siberian Husky
both tried to get at our rats (at different times). The rats bit both of them on their noses. Now they leave the rats alone. You would not believe how much a dog's nose bleeds when it's bitten by a rat.

7. Bobby and Robin
Once I tell Bobby any new animal is 'mummy's' she leaves them alone.
This is my first try at posting pictures by the way.

14. That is so cute
look at the doggie's face. And a tame robbin. Wow. It reminds me of something that would make a cute children's story.

15. For some odd reason, my dog covets my bird's FOOD
Whenever any bird seed flies out of the cage and lands on the floor (not that *that* ever happens, lol) my dog just LOVES to go clean it all up off the floor.

A dog who loves bird seed, go figure. I mean, she *really* loves bird seed, like it's popcorn to her or something.

So she'd probably never go after the bird, cuz then her supply of birdseed would stop, she's smart like that.

I don't know my dog's background, since I rescued her as an adult - but what sort of upbringing would inspire this sort of behavior in a dog? Raised around chickens and chicken feed maybe? I can't figure it out.

19. One of my dogs
does the same thing. He is insanely jealous of the bird. Took awhile but he has started stalking (and catching!) backyard birds. Pretty good for a 15 pound dog with kidney disease and chronic spinal problems. I've rescued four birdies from his mouth. All very scared but none of them injured at all. No blood, no broken bones, no missing feathers that I could see. I don't think the dog wants to injure or hurt them. I think he is very curious and wants to play. Still.

Have to say the bird does his part to tease the dog. He throws seeds at him. When he is out on his playtop he will climb down and sit on the edge of the mess catcher and twitch his tail at the dog while making clucking bird sounds - just out of reach of the small little dog. The bird does realize that the dog could hurt him and is quite fearful of the dog when he is away from the safety of his cage.

I've decided my bird needs a new home. There is the dog issue - which does have a negative impact on the bird's quality of life. And it seems that bird dander/litter trigger Dad's allergies and asthma. I haven't had any luck finding a new home for the bird. I had hoped to find one through the vet or through friends and acquaintances. Guess I am going to have to break down and put some flyers out at the pet stores. I've been putting it off for a long time because I'm rather fond of the bird.

For sale young well behaved quaker parrot with two cages: a travel cage and a full size white powder coated cage with mess catcher, playtop and two trays. Vet reference required.

I'm having trouble putting a price on him and his stuff. Truth is I'd be happy to give him and all his stuff to anyone I knew would provide him a good home.

18. How about family dogs who try to introduce a bird to the family?
Melia, my black lab/collie mix has a long alligator beak. She'll catch birds outside (she's a damn good jumper and these birds misjudge how high she can go) and will bring them in the house and let them loose. Result - one terrified bird flying around the house and 3 dogs trying to chase the poor thing. So, I wind up opening all the doors and chasing the poor bird outside while yelling at the dogs to "Leave the damn bird alone you lummoxes!"
