Has anyone here seen "The Forbidden Kingdom"? |
|
I just got an email from an old colleague of mine who directed it. He's in Beijing right now (the Premiere was there last weekend). I told him that I'd try to catch it this weekend. The trailer looked OK-great visual effects. But Rob said that production took a year, and that is a bit worrisome. Not sure that I actually CAN make it this weekend, but if I can do I need to brace myself first?
It's awkward enough when an artist you know shows you their work and it's just not your thing, but when a friend is involved in a film that isn't your cup of tea...well, there's a lot more emotional investment there, so it's always important to find SOMETHING really good to say about it!

2. Well, I guess it could be worse! |

I've heard NO buzz on it at all, which can't be a good sign.
I guess I'll look at the reviews on rotten tomatoes, too. I was hoping that someone here would have something to say. If I need to make something up on short notice I don't want to reference an existing review!

I love this genre. They are living works of art. The trailers are beautiful, and funny. I've been waiting for this one, so thanks for the heads-up! http://www.forbiddenkingdommovie.com/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e66Og0lOCcE

so that's not awful. I don't know what it is with my friend; he has a bad case of ADD or something. He's always had a few problems with continuity and focus when he directs a picture, and this really isn't his genre (he usually does family/ kids movies). He said that making it was a real adventure and he's still enjoying the promotion phase, so regardless, the journey has been great for him. Bottom line; that's what matters most. I know a lot of people who worked on blockbusters who had a miserable time on them, so they hated the final product. But I've worked on a flop or two that I had fun with, and I really didn't care about the final product (never even saw them in the theaters). As long as it leads to more enjoyable gigs then it's worthwhile!

5. Oh these are gorgeous things |

You enter another world. Last one I saw was The Curse of The Golden Flower. Not a promising title, so I wasn't expecting much, but I loved it. http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony/curseofthegoldenflower/theatrical_large.html

6. Oh, I saw that one too. It was a bit of a downer (to say the least) |
|
and the end, but the visuals were stunning.
I really liked "Hero, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "House of flying daggers".
I think Rob's film will be a bit more, er, "light and fluffy". ;-)

A comment on the human condition, but with, as you say, stunning visuals.
Light and fluffy is good too, because the choreography and the shots alone are worth it. Jackie Chan's humour just adds to it. I think I've seen every one of his movies as well. :)
