My new avatar looks distorted -- how do I fix it?

I made it 44 x 44 pixels, which I'd seen recommended on one of the threads earlier today. But when I look at it now online, it's not square. It's about 2 centimenters wide and 1.8 centimeters high, and I can see that it's distorted.

The DU-supplied avatar I was using before was 48 x 48 pixels. If I made the new one that size, would it display properly?

If not, what other solution is there?

1. I made mine 48 48

But sometimes the ratio is wrong so if one is 48 the other is 51 or so

But so is yours on my screen. Maybe it's the way my monitor is set. It's definitely 48 x 48 pixels, no matter how I measure it.

I guess I'll assume it looks fine to everyone else and stop fussing over it.

6. look at DU's avatars

DU avatars - how do they look on your screen? the 1k limit is too bad - if you look at those avatars, they are all compressed a little more than you'd want for a clean looking image. 1.5k would be better.
