But, it's apparently centered on Oroville, CA!

USGS says: not yet determined re: magnitude

Anyone else feel it? Happened 11:40-11:41

OMG! 4.9 Verdi, NV

1. I see two on the quake map
One 20 miles west of Reno, a 4.9 at 11:40.

Well, now they've removed the other one. It was closer to Oroville.

16. Somewhere around there...she played for her high school team also...
She was a senior this year, and UC Santa Barbara has made some noise about a scholarship to play there...one of their scouts watched her at a few games, and they have talked with her, but nothing solid yet.

13. A "surface quake?"
Now they are reporting it at 6 miles from Reno, 2.3 magnitude, but 0.0 depth...which would explain why such a small shaker was felt so strongly, I guess...

7. Tes...at the Sands...she has been a California girl for almost 18 years...
but this one seemed to put the thrill in her...USGS says only 3.o. but alos only about 4 miles from Reno and 2.5 miles deep...could account for the way it felt on the ground...

12. It's the depth of the EQ that makes a difference
Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 02:13 AM by Whoa_Nelly
in terms of plate/fault shift.

The ones that have been happening most recently by Reno have been 1.7-3 miles depth.
Depth on this one is still unknown, but the deeper the center of origin, the more chanve of severe shift.
But, am sure your daughter will be OK.
The hotels are EQ absorption built on CA standards, so they may sway and ratle, but are made to withstand a lot.
They were right to evacuate. Keep us posted on what's going on with her!

17. I definitely felt it in SW Reno
at first they said it was centered near Loyalton, now saying Verdi

this swarm of quakes we've been having around Reno is WEIRD. not sure what to make of it
I don't think I'll be getting to sleep soon.

18. I understand they have also been having a very strange swarm...
of a very unusual type of quake, or gas release, or something off the coast of Oregon also...typically associated with volcanic activity rather than plate tectonics (if the two are seperable).

And welcome to DU!

21. thanks :)
yeah, I've heard about the swarm off the Oregon coast. I have no idea what could be going on with that.
All I know is here in the Reno area we've had over 100 small quakes since yesterday afternoon. I can't help but wonder if the worst is yet to come.

I just felt an aftershock as I'm typing...this is gonna be a long night

23. I am hoping...
that the number of quakes means stress is being relieved along th faultline gradually...rather than one big slip. Stay safe!

27. felt bigger than 4.7 to me
I lived in the L.A. area for many years prior to moving to Reno so I've experienced quite a few earthquakes.

I understand that the quakes we've been having around here are pretty shallow so they tend to feel a bit stronger and are felt over a wider area than deeper earthquakes. The last one I felt was the 3.5 aftershock quite a while ago so maybe there is sleep in my future.

btw, I live in the Mt. Rose hwy area, not far from Zolezzi.
