How are you NOT a liberal stereotype?
I can't stand NPR.

Sunday driving: good. Road trips: better.

I don't really have a problem with responsible hunting or responsible gun ownership.

Responsible logging is fine by me.

I'm not a fan of Michael Moore.

Fast food and soda sometimes just hit the spot.

I think politically correct language/thought sometimes goes overboard and becomes counterproductive.

I don't buy hippie toilet paper, dish soap, or anything else.

I have been known to use round-up and non-organic fertilizers in the yard.

How about y'all?

18. I like fishing and
I eat meat.

I like punk rock, although I like some folk music too every now and again.

I prefer Maxwell House with Hershey's syrup or Ovaltine (and milk) mixed in instead of high end coffee. I refuse to pay $5 for a tiny little cup of coffee just because of the logo on the cup. That shit ain't happening.

Speaking of refusing to pay too much:
I'm a fiscal conservative when it comes to pinching pennies. I'm for social programs (social liberal all the way), but in my personal life, I pinch pennies every chance I get so I can save money. I good savings never hurt anyone. Republicans are not conservatives when it comes to money. The overspend on $600 toilets and $200 pencils, the assholes. In reality, most poor Democrats are actually the fiscal conservatives. We have to be fiscally conservative unlike the stereotype claims.

I drink my Dr Pepper and smoke my cigarettes. I'll be respectful of anyone who doesn't like smoking, unless they cop an attitude before I ever get the damn thing lit up. If they do that, it's AWN! I am a respectful smoker, so anyone, who doesn't like it, can just just let me know in a civil manner and I'll be civil in return. Act like an ass, and I'll out-ass you.

I'll hog the Dr Pepper though and even squirrel it away and hide a 2 liter here or there. I want to make sure I don't run out. I hate the feeling of no Dr Pepper. I do drink water, but only enough to keep my kidneys from paying me back for practically murdering them all these years. I don't need anyone nagging me. I'll clutch my damn Dr Pepper and cigarettes until the day I die and they can pry them both out of my cold, clammy, rigor mortified, hands, if they really want to take them away from me that bad. My body is going to be donated to the body farm, either the one in Tennessee or the one in North Carolina that they are getting ready to open. If anyone wants to pry them out of my hands then, they are more than welcome to contact whichever body farm I decide on.

I'm against burning the flag. It has been instilled in me from my aunt who was in the army. I won't do that. I cannot bring myself to burn what may one day set me free if America ever becomes what it has always aspired to be. That's what matters more. That at least we are trying. Dammit, we might not be perfect and we got a shit for brains president right now, but at least we have a history of trying to make our wrongs right and free people, most of the time. That means something personal to me, so I won't burn the flag.

Other than that, I am a flaming liberal. I believe we should take care of the poor, make sure everyone gets a fair chance in this country, and always strive to do what's best for the environment and the people and animals and plants and even the damned ol' biting, stinging insects that live in it.

I find several portions of NPR boring as all-fuck.

I love meat way too much to be a vegetarian and, besides that, can't imagine ever giving up milk or cheese to go vegan.

Soda in moderation is very very cool. Seriesly.

There is such a thing as being too politically correct, yes.

There are 3 or 4 guns on this property--they're not my guns, but I don't mind them anyway.

I'm not too much of a bleeding heart-er--certainly more compassionate than your average neocon, but my opposition to war, violence, etc. is generally more about the stupidity and illogic of it than how much it kills me to see people torn apart.

I hate coffee of all stripes, including the infamous lattes.

I don't think all cops or firefighters or what-have-you are bad people, on power-trips, slaves of the system, etc.

I don't think anarchism is a solution to any problem, and I doubt that strict communism is better than unrestrained capitalism--a middle ground is necessary.

I don't smoke pot or do any other drug and don't see much why people bother to do so, though certainly some of the national legislation on drugs is downright "WTF?"-ish (cannabis as Schedule I while cocaine is Schedule II? Yeah, okay).

I'm a virgin and I though I'm pro-sex education, pro-birth control, pro-abortion rights, and don't think sex must be saved until marriage, I don't understand how some people can be so free with it, visit prostitutes, etc.

I'm sure there's more...

Have no problem with gun ownership, do believe guns should be licensed.

Prefer organic material merely because it's more comfortable than synthetic.

Agnostic, but no problem with honest religious faith as long my beliefs are respected.

Shoes: I buy Shoes for Crews because they're comfortable, sensible and wear well.

Organic for the landscape, but I'm not fanatical about it.

Never been in a Starbucks.

Cars: I buy what I can afford.

Government service at any level: It's neither a sell out nor a loser/brute's option.

116. IF guilt can be proven without any doubt..
There are enough humans, like 7 billion. Life isn't worth so much that the public should go on housing and feeding a violent one for another 50 years. I realize that the actual ending (execution) costs a lot of money but it shouldn't.. millions of animals are cheaply slaughtered every day for us to consume, and while millions of poor kids are dying at the same time from starvation?! I cannot consider humans' lives sacred, not with all I've seen of them. Keeping dangerous violent people alive and healthy for decades is a waste. Same with war.

120. The reason an execution costs as much as it does is usually related to extensive appeals that go alo
Which one would assume necessary in trying to prove guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt.

The problem, though, is that state violence, whether war or capital punishment, has a noted legitimizing effect. Studies have actually shown that countries with capital punishment are more likely to have higher rates of violent crime because state violence makes violence in general more legitimate, so the general population becomes, overall, more likely to commit violent acts. I wish I remembered the authors' name now, but one of the main studies is, I think, called "Violence and Crime in Cross-National Perspective." Well worth reading.

145. Unfortunately,
our system is seriously fucked up and a shockingly large percentage of people on death row aren't guilty of the crime they're accused of. Not to mention the disparity with which minorities (particularly black people) are given the death penalty.

There will never be a way to ensure that everyone we execute is guilty. Never. And at this point, we're so far from close to that, it's disgusting.

29. I hate the smell of pot, don't wanna smell it, don't wanna smoke it (though
years ago I did). And spare me the argument about how "good quality pot" smells like heaven. If so, I hope I'm going to hell.

I do, however, smoke cigarettes, but not around non-smokers. Pot-smokers who have a cloud of the stuff following them around, who try to lecture me about cigarettes, will get an eye-roll from me. And I know there are differences in the substances, but I hate the smell of pot, so spare me.

I just can't get all excited about environmental issues. That's not to say I don't pay attention to them. And that's not to say I don't do my part (i.e. recycling, etc.), but it doesn't mean I have to sit in rapt attention when the local environmental show comes on the radio (that's when I change the channel).

I am not anti-gun/anti-hunting. (Though I can't think of a singly reason why someone would need an Uzi to go kill some dinner.....)

Amy Goodman sets my teeth on edge about 5 minutes into "Democracy Now".

I am a NASCAR fan, and have been all my life. I've been to three races at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and I absolutely loved it. My parents both raced stock cars for fun, and I used to go to the local tracks to watch them. And I hate the argument that somehow open-wheel racing is "superior". Racin' is racin', regardless of the form it takes.

I think that a lot of "political correctness" is bullshit. I also think that it is sometimes used to ignore or cover up actual issues of racism, sexism, ageism, or any other -ism out there.

Sometimes I refer to myself as a bitch, and I have yet to kneecap myself for doing so. I also don't feel insulted when the waitresses at my local diner call me "Honey."

I love fast food (though my daily diet doesn't consist of it).

I drive a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis, and I don't care if it's too big for some liberal sensitivities. I inherited it when my mother passed away, and I have no car payments. We had one car between us (MrSG and I), which wasn't working out very well; I'm grateful that my siblings voted that I should have mom's car.

I know there's more, but that's enough for now.

It makes me feel good inside when they do it, like some part of the world is still nice and friendly. I admit, I tip more to the ones who do say that and smile. Is that wrong?

I...don't hate everything Michael Moore has ever made, but I resent his presence in the "progressive" movement because his loyalties are flexible. I hate most of the people calling themselves "progressive" because many of them actually are not. I have major issues with both Obama and Clinton. I think pot and most other illicit drugs are evil. I don't drink.

Very few things can't be improved with sausage gravy.

Soymilk? WTF? Ain't never seen no nipples on a soybean. If it were possible to order EXTRA caffeine, milkfat, MSG, gluten, and whatever else it's trendy to object to, I would.

I like porn. I like BDSM. I like to dress slutty and have people stare at me--although I am all in favor of casual sex, paradoxically I like to dress up for it.

I like heavy metal.

I don't want to go "back to the land." Chicago is "village" enough for me, thanks. If I ever move, it'll be to go somewhere BIGGER.

I hate potlucks. You want me to fucking WORK IN THE KITCHEN just so I can come to your party? Hell no. I'll pick up a pie at the supermarket and you'll like it. (You'll like it better than anything I cook anyway, I promise. See item #1)

I smoke. I'm not sorry. My dad owns guns. He's not sorry.

My standard day to day diet is very nearly veterinarian these days but when I want to make any sort of celebratory meal, even just having friends over, I go to my grills and smokers (yes those are both plural) and get myself some animal flesh (although since I do it only on occasions now it is always locally, sustainable raised meat so maybe that busts my anti-stereotype claim, but then again that meat is sooo much better anyway).

I also can't stand the feeling of going braless. Bounce, flop, bounce, flop ICK. And they're not even that big! I prefer underwires too.

44. A list:
I own guns, and as soon as SCOTUS stands up for the 2nd Amendment and strikes-down weapons bans, I'm buying an AWP.

I'm extremely hawkish, though I oppose the war in Iraq because has done nothing but distract us from the real enemy. I have no issue with us invading a sovereign friendly nation (Pakistan) to find and kill that enemy.

I'm generally opposed to political correctness (I think it devalues ideas and destroys language and is anathema to free speech.)

I'm critical of the so-called "victim culture"...too many people look for excuses why they're persecuted rather than look in the mirror and face their responsibility in where their life is going. There is real persecution in the world and I find it trivializing and demeaning to those actually suffering in oppression.

At one point in college I was being groomed to be one of the cadre of young rising leaders of the pro-life movement. (In my defense, that was the same period of time when I was being fitted for cassock and collar, I clearly wasn't thinking straight. It left me a better activist though and strengthened my resolve against humanitarian abuses, animal cruelty and capital punishment.)

46. Okay.....
Rachel Maddow is really starting to annoy me.

Dunkin Donuts coffee was my daily thing, until I found out Bush owns it - so now I drink Wawa coffee. I don't do Starbucks.

I support the death penalty in certain circumstances - ie., Richard Ramirez and Ambrose Harris (two animals who reveled in their crimes and bragged about them during their trials. One of them actually winked at the parents and told them that their daughter was a great fuck. Hell yeah, I support frying those bastards - and I'll pull the switch if they need a volunteer.)

I believe that the video game, film and music industries have gone too far. There is absolutely nothing beneficial or productive in "entertaining" humans beings with graphic violence or in lyrics that undermine human life. Free enterprise was given an inch and took a fucking mile.

I am against burning the flag. If someone wants to do that, fine - but don't make it a public event; my Pop didn't get shot in Germany, and his brother didn't die in Normandy, France, so that we can exercise our right to burn the nation's symbol.

Sometimes a mouthy, out of control child needs a good old-fashioned swat on the butt.

I'm an agnostic, but damned if I don't get completely sucked into the beauty of the song "Battle Hymn of the Republic". It gives me chills everytime I hear it.

I am a huge advocate for war veterans, and have spent many years counseling and assisting Vietnam vets. I am not pro-war, but our men thought they were doing their nation a service by going to war, and I want to help them in any way I can, since they were willing to put their lives on the line for us.

For a liberal, I have a healthy respect for authority. I believe teachers should be in charge in the classroom and that parents should not entreat their children to be mildly civil and/or cooperative, and it's even worse when these servile adults thank the kids for complying.

I don't buy the eat-your-own, circular firing squad drill. Choose your battles and see the big picture, and don't go creating a nice long list of all the people you will have nothing to do with.

And on a similar note, I believe that Democrats have to make alliances with independents and Republicans. You can't sacrifice accomplishments to ideological purity, thank you very much.

I think people flatter themselves that they're "sticking it to the man" when they're really just being jerks to low-level staffers in congressional offices, local businesses, and employees of corporations.

In fact, I believe in good manners.

I don't believe an antiwar demonstration that ties up a single intersection is the equivalent of marching on the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

I don't believe in trashing a single generation, or stereotyping those who practice a particular faith, or making rude comments to people who practice another faith, or responding to tragedies with pop culture references but no empathy (e.g., responding to a shooting at the Mexican border by comparing it to a movie scene).

And I go to mass and even confession.

I think that the sports/steroid issue is abso-fucking-lutely hilarious.

When I'm goofing about the house, I speak in a fake British accent.

I LOVE pitbulls.

I drink non-domestic beer.

I work for a HUGH!!1! corporation, and they outsource shit overseas (not my call).

I like commercial music. Much better than all the "indie" stuff I've attempted to get to like. I find artistry and value in many commercially successful bands. INCLUDING NICKLEBACK.

I'm an adult entertainer. *i* happen to think that's pretty liberal, but a lot of liberals don't.

Yes on the fast food, although not often. Soda definately, again, although I balance it with water and hot tea equally. I ONLY like coca-cola. I really think there are some beneficial qualities to it. Weird, I know.

I also agree about overdoing the PC thing sometimes.

I still eat meat. I am not committed to never stopping, it's just that I get hungry for it. I think at some point I will become vegetarian. Small steps for me.

LOVE to drive. I tried to balance that with a Honda del Sol. But I also love most american muscle cars, so...

Sometimes I just shop where it's cheapest; I have to get what I need for my family. They come before any adherence to political ideology in a money crunch.

Never been in a Starbucks.

I don't think we should ban guns outright. I don't know what the solution is, but what we have isn't really working. I think most common-sense owners are just fine. But who gets to judge common sense? I'm lost. I'm not for lots of controlling laws.

Really don't like pot. But each to their own.

I've been a pro-wrestling fan for 25 years.

I'm a definite carnivore and sometimes eat fast food.

I am opposed to cell phone fundamentalism, and will use my cell phone in the car if it's necessary. I also eat in the car and listen to the car radio.

I am strongly opposed to infidelity. (I don't think that has anything to do with liberalism or conservatism, but I've seen DU threads where those who have strong opinions against cheating are accused of being right-wing.)

I was actually engaged to a hardcore Bush supporter a couple of years ago! When we met, we were both moderates. Through the years, I moved to the left and she moved to the right.

I have a swimming pool in Arizona (irritates the hell out of my liberal brother ... who violates the stereotypes by being very Catholic).

I don't think the death penalty is cruel and unusual punishment, I'm against for the most part because I think life in prison without the possibility of parole is much crueler  - seriously, there are some people who shouldn't be allowed to live but I see our justice system as such a royal f**king disaster that I don't trust it to execute the right person. Besides, I think it is just a stupid form of punishment. Yeah, people don't want to die but once they are dead they no longer care because they no longer exist! The death penalty is only the ultimate punishment if you believe in an afterlife.

I hate coffee and ain't all that fond of tea, either.

good idea to me. Compulsory government schooling has too much of a tendency to become government mind-control (13-14 yrs X 180 days of such control - NOT what the founders had in mind), and does a damned good job of producing mindless drones to become cogs in the corporate machine. See Steven Arons great book "Compelling Belief", also John Taylor Gatto.

80. Most of my exceptions are qualified, but I noted that:

I don't listen to NPR or 'liberal' radio (or any radio...I have in the past, and NPR can be cool, but radio's been off my radar entirely for years now)

I don't vilify hunters without cause -- I grew up around real men of the land, including men who'd disappear into the bush for days with minimal vittles and come out with a deer or whatever. However, I've noticed that many 'sport' hunters here in the USA seem terminally lazy, out of touch with nature, and reliant on technology (often tied to extreme physical laziness) and sometimes the hunt is not at all the kind of match that I tend to think is honorable. I don't like trophy hunting. I also think guns need to be more controlled in this country, with the minimum being a national licensing and safety requirement for each gun owner. I hate the NRA, and if I had a gun I'd still hate them.

I am an environmental scientist and conservationist, but I'm really a closet preservationist. I've got a streak of a sort of misanthropy, based on the way humans tend to behave, and a lot of it's relative to how we interact with Nature. I pay lip service to conservation and catchphrases like 'sustainable development,' but in my heart I am a preservationist. I certainly believe that there are places where most people should not be able to go, which is why I am so firmly against sending tourists (and certainly oilmen and the like) to Antarctica and why the mass tours up Everest so disgust me.

Much of what passes for 'politically correct' used to be known by a more accurate term: stupid.

I don't like coffee. Of any kind. Not at all.

I also don't like Birkenstocks. I wore sandals a lot when I was doing field work in the tropics, and just flopping around back in the almost-as-humid South, but I wore mostly Merrels and Teva-style sandals of various brands.

I can't say I'm a really big fan of Brie, either, though I've lately had a few bits of it that were rather tasty.

I own a very fast sport bike (it does, at least, get good gas mileage) on which I gleefully and regularly exceed 100 mph, a 1973 Lincoln Mark IV (from back when there was at least some excuse for making gas guzzlers), and a (small 6-cylinder) Mercedes that I'm soon going to give up for a more suitable Japanese car. I don't own a bicycle, a Volvo, or a hybrid...I'm not averse to them, I just don't own any of them right now. I do, however, walk an awful lot.

James Taylor bores the hell out of me.

I'm an omnivore. We all are, I'll grant you, but some of us choose to go unnatural and get vegan -- fine for them, if they can ensure they take in all the right ingredients, one way or another. I have typically eaten very little meat, though, for many years (and when I do eat meat I eat little beef -- so many people seem to equate the word "meat" only with beef). For long periods of time I have essentially been ovo-lacto (really, just lacto-) vegetarian. I could never be vegan (dairy products, as not-good as they can be, include too many things I'd miss) but giving up all meats wouldn't be a hardship.

I tend to have a base-level respect for law enforcement types. Basically, most I've met have been decent. I have had some encounters with police that left me cold, though, and angry (and unfairly treated). And I have zero respect for police and so on who abuse their authority, or for police organizations that act like this place is already an overt police state. I also don't like how much power the collective law enforcement sector has in this country, these days, and how much the government (and supermarkets, marketers, or whoever) knows about us courtesy of electronic databases.

Ditto military. Veterans and active-duty. And not just of my home countries.

Radicals of any stripe usually suck. Far left or far right or whatever advocacy group that, through stupid and offensive tactics (Such as Earth First and PETA), invariably alienates people who'd otherwise agree with them. They tend to be obnoxious people. where I grew up, the mainstream was significantly to the left of the US' more progressive population and the leftists there were actual communists, albeit university-style 'trendy lefties' for whom being obnoxious in that particular way would eventually fade. Communists suck. So did the ultra-radical feminists on campus who not only let it be known that all men are rapists ("all men could be rapists" is something I could agree with, at least from the perspective of a woman remaining aware of her environment and who's in it) but persisted with the "womyn"/"wimmin"/etc stuff long after the fading of any comedic value such lolfeminist misspellings might have initially held.

I can see the value in managing wild populations of certain animals. We messed 'em up, and we need to compensate for that. From recent threads here, I see that many hereabouts seem to think they're siding with the cuddly widdle animals when they decry culls when, in fact, they're siding with the nasty effects of overpopulation and such related things as historically (anthropogenically) off-kilter predator-prey dynamics and habitat degradation...they think they're being all liberal but, actually, they're being all clueless.

I'm somewhat ambivalent about the death penalty. In most cases I think its probably a bad option, and I can see -- and agree with -- the basic moral objection to its existence. But, still, I have a rather visceral response to the crimes of some and the response is that some people just need killing. When the crime is definitively proven -- think people like Jeffrey Dahmer here, among many others -- it's kind of hard not to think that they just don't deserve to exist. Maybe the victims' family members should be given the option of doing it themselves, thus absolving the state and the great collective us of participating. But, yeah, probably not a good idea, either...

I think some wars are necessary. But most are not. And even the necessary ones are a tragedy, not something to be celebrated or used as jingoistic Viagra. World War Two was probably the last war (actually, the ONLY war -- nobody on the planet can really explain how WWI started and grew) that the USA fought in that was fully justified for reasons other than profit or power. The notion that the USA is a global policeman can be a dangerous one, but involvement in the Balkans in the '90s was called for, I think, too. Would have been nice if Rwanda got the same treatment.

I don't use any drugs. Never did. Never wanted to. I don't like what various drugs do to people (everything from the annoying to the truly dangerous), but I'm also increasingly unhappy about what the so-called (failed) War on Drugs does to people.

Don't drink wine, either. Or any other alcohol. Just never interested me. If I did drink, rum would probably be something I'd like better than most of that other icky stuff.

I think a lot of the New Age stuff out there is utter claptrap. Much of what latter-day New Agers draw on is interesting, and perhaps quite valid, but the New Agers I'm talking about are the ones who take a bit from here and a bit from there, without understanding those bits or their original contexts, and come up with some ridiculous crap. It doesn't help that a great many of these people that I've known, and ALL that I've known very closely, tend to be very quick to get nasty and even violent...maybe they're turning to that stuff to solve such issues but, at some point, perhaps they should acknowledge that it's not working and that all they're being is unrepentant hypocrites. A lot of Native American and Chinese tradition, for example, has been willy-nilly corrupted by such people...fine, if it helps, but all they get is empty ritual without the real value that's found within the broader culture. I remember when groups of New Agers were flocking to Sedona and scattering medicine wheels and fires all over the place, peeving rangers who complained about their negative effects on the land out there and making local Indians roll their eyes 'cos medicine wheels were made by Plains Indians, not local Arizona tribes. The book Mutant Message Down Under is a prime example of the same sort of thing -- it's absolutely disgusting, not so much the co-opting of a culture (and even not so much because the co-opters do not understand that culture) but the outright lies that are created to bolster prestige, sales, or whatever.

I grew up largely in the country, and thereabouts, and have a somewhat rural viewpoint and bias despite living in big cities since. Where I grew up, though, was not the Deliverance kind of country and my most formative years were spent living at an outdoor pursuits center that was located way out in the boonies but that attracted a very cosmopolitan group of outdoors luminaries and well-educated people...kind of atypical but a good mix to grow up with. I doubt I'll ever consider myself a city person, or even come close to looking like I fit in on the streets of a city like New York.

I like action movies. Some of them, anyway. And big, dumb Hollywood movies in general. Well...not the considerable trash coming out of the studios, and bad action movies or comedies (or combinations thereof), but stuff like the ultimate example of good Hollywood action-parodying-action movies: Big Trouble In Little China. And, yes, I watch films that star male actors who're often identified (more often that not, wrongly) as Republicans or even Freeper types, people like Clint Eastwood, Kurt Russell, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, and others. Even Arnold -- Terminator 2 was quite a piece of work and the oft-scorned The Last Action Hero is a true classic in my estimation. James Woods may well have turned into a deranged Freeper type, but he's still a great actor, as is the magnificent (if nowadays somewhat deluded) Robert Duvall. For that matter, Crazy Tom Cruise has turned out some decent performances, and even some of the films where his shortcomings (no height pun intended) are more apparent happen to be entertaining films (for example, The Last Samurai, a nicely-made film with a petulant one-note Cruise that was totally stolen by Ken Watanabe's excellent presence).

I detest snobs of all stripes. Intellectual snobs have long been my foe. Because I was big, rode a motorcycle, and wore leather or denim or other decidedly non-trendy duds, and had long (-ish) hair my teens and 20s seemed to have me constantly underestimated by others in my classes who were entirely too full of themselves and loudly tried to display their alleged intellectual prowess while looking down on the likes of me. It was always fun to see attitudes changed when test scores and other grades were posted, because I was consistently at or near the head of every class, all the way through. Bozos. Music snobs, plenty of which populate DU, are the same kind of people: I had lots of them about in my first years at university, too, and it was pretty obvious that many tended to passionately wax rhapsodic over the most obscure bands solely because they thought there was something in their 'music' that only they could understand (the joke being on them, of course, because the reason nobody else liked those bands was because they sucked!)

I go to Wal Mart sometimes. I hate the place. I always have (long before I knew of their business and labor practices) because of the atmosphere, the service, and the one in my university town having security hassle people for writing down prices as part of their comparison shopping. But I go there, sometimes, because I tend to work odd hours and when I've finished work in the wee hours of the morning there's nowhere else where I can get motor oil, some kind of food, and toiletries at 3 AM (though, in a nocturnal town like Vegas, there's often a crowd there at that time and, of course, they have way too few registers open, as seems to be Wal Mart policy). It's convenient, but it still sucks.

I think violence is sometimes the answer. Not that I've been out picking fights, but sometimes the threat of violence (or the ability to deliver it, even if the other person does not know that) can be a handy tool for social interactions...well, in Las Vegas, for sure. I'm talking self-defense here, of course, or defense of a third party. Even if I were not a traditional martial artist, I'd be reluctant to ever use physical force (and, yes, part of that's practical: no matter what advantage you may have, you can still get hurt), but having it in the arsenal is better than it not being there when you need it or finding that you can't bring yourself to use it when it's definitely called for.

I'm starting to think censorship might be a good idea, on a case-by-case basis. Starting with Rush Limbaugh...

83. Mine
1. George Bush Senior is one of my political heroes. I profoundly admired and respected him during his presidency and I still consider him to be one of the most foreign policy Presidents that the United States has ever had. He was a great conciliator and mediator in terms of foreign policy and his achievements should be remembered and appreciated and if any of his children were even a quarter of what their father was, they would have made the world a better place. Unfortunately they didn’t take after their dad and the world has suffered for it. I believe the better presidential candidate won in 1988, just the same as the better presidential candidate won in 1972.
2. Speaking of Richard Nixon, I believe he has largely been unfairly maligned for his faults without being equally celebrated for his achievements. His legacy on issues such as civil rights, environmentalism, the Middle East peace process, engaging China and the like should not be forgotten.
3. I approved of much of America’s Cold War foreign policy and, a quarter of a century ago, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle and the like were my role models in terms of foreign policy. They lost the plot after the Cold War but they were mostly right on the mark during the Cold War. I guess you could call me a “Scoop Jackson Democrat”, although I didn’t like Scoop Jackson.
4. I am a strong supporter of missile defense initiatives such as SDI and believe in the nuclear deterrent.
5. I strongly approve of the first Persian Gulf War (1991), the Panama Invasion (1989) and the Kosovo military intervention. I also believe America should have invaded Iran in the aftermath of the Iranian hostage crisis (do not support a military attack on Iran now)
6. I supported Indonesia’s occupation of East Timor because it was in Australia’s national security interests and continue to do so now. I make no apology for it –it was necessary in the context of regional stability and the Cold War
7. I only drink coffee occasionally.
8. I support the death penalty
9. I have strong reservations about abortion, even though I would classify myself as pro-choice
10. I like fast food
11. I eat meat.

85. A few non "stereotypical" things
I like pop.
I drink a certain brand of beer which is made in America and is a HUGE corporation out of St. Louis
Sometimes I drive just for pleasure. I like my car and wish to get my money's worth out of it.
I like good old rock and roll from the '70's, including Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Criminals who rape and murder should be shown no leniency whatsoever.
The USA needs a strong military.
I like sports, especially my first place Cubs.

Wow, with the above allegedly non-Liberal things, should I turn in my Liberal card now? Must be a centrist at best. Good thread. Fun to see what us no good Liberals like and dislike outside of what limbaugh, etc. think we should and shouldn't like.

I love meat, especially red meat, I drink lite beer, I drink diet Pepsi, I love McDonalds coke, I don't really like classical music, I go to church, I have never smoked pot (nor ever had a desire to), I like sports a lot, I buy People Magazine occasionally, I love the ABC soap operas, dislike wine, hate brie, avocados, and mushrooms, own three TVs, drive an American car, think there are better ways to express oneself than by profanity, all I can think of at the moment.

88. Let's see here:
I eat a lot of meat, including red meat, and probably too much fast food.

I enjoy watching sports, especially American football.

I prefer "good" (i.e. microbrew) beer, but Pabst or Miller High Life will do in a pinch, or if I'm trying to get wasted.

I don't have an irrational, pathological hatred of guns, and I think handguns, shotguns, and hunting rifles (but not Uzi's or AK-47's) should be legal to own.

As I've stated on DU before, I think the whole debate over "PC" vs. "un-PC" is just stupid. First of all, the terms are rather meaningless, because everyone has their own definition of what is or isn't offensive. Secondly, advocating politeness and sensitivity is fine, but demanding that people think and talk the way you want them to at all times, even in private, is absurd.

On a related note, I have a sense of humor many would consider "un-PC" (whatever that means), and I've been known to enjoy things that get some lefties' unmentionables in a serious wad - gangsta rap, Howard Stern, Andrew Dice Clay, GG Allin, etc. Certain friends and I have been known to joke around in ways that definitely wouldn't fly here, but it's all in good fun.

Maybe most importantly of all, I lack the wide-eyed, "save-the-world" perspective that a lot of lefty types seem to have. I don't believe in human perfectibility, and I even consider it a dangerous idea that has led to everything from political repression to genocide (see Stalin's Russia and Mao's China for a primer). While a lot of human behavior is due to cultural factors, I don't think all of it can be explained away like that, given that certain trends seem to remain constant throughout history. Those who seem to believe that people will suddenly act different ("better") than they always have, given the proper indoctrination, honestly scare me.

90. A few off the top of my head
Am against the death penalty and unprovoked war, but am also pro-life.
Grew up around guns and am an Army veteran. I can operate a pistol or a rifle proficiently, but don't own either one.
Have been known to vote Republican in a local or state election. Have never voted Republican for a federal office.
I think capitalism is as good an economic system as any. A vested self-interest is a powerful motivator.
I detest communism. Any ism which proposes that the individual is subservient to the state is hateful.
But I also think a little more socialism might be a good thing here in the USA. Good luck getting some, though.
I drink beer and whiskey, not white wine. I smoke, too.
I have never hugged a tree. Have hugged a couple toilets, though.
I have several friends who would describe themselves as "conservatives" and I love them very much. Politics should never get in the way of friendship though, alas, sometimes it does. On the other hand, I find myself in more heated arguments on DU than I ever do out here in the real world.
John
I know I'm a Democrat. Sometimes I wonder just how "liberal" I am, though (and, to tell a family secret, my father was a Republican).

Come to think of it, I'm married to a guy who used to be a Republican. Does that count?

93. For starters, I'm pro-life
...although in a consistent way. I think most abortions are performed to cover up adultery, rape, other "forbidden" sex, and abuse of females. Choice, my ass! It ain't her choice AFAIC!

I oppose same-sex marriage. The reason is primarily rooted in nature.

I don't drink lattes or any other overpriced java. I like milk in my coffee--not coffee in my milk--and I don't like my coffee sweet, and I'm content with the least expensive coffee. It doesn't have to be Starbucks (they don't call it starbucks for nothing.

I eat meat and don't plan on stopping any time soon.

I think "health food" and vegetarian diets are for cows, not humans. Humans are omnivores. I'll go veggie vegan when I grow three extra stomachs.

I don't like most vegetables.

I have little respect or tolerance for synchretic religions, heathen religions masquerading in Christian costumes, e.g., Santeria (Cuban origin), Haitian-style voodoo, Candomble (Brazilian origin), etc.. Tolerance, schmolerance--it's a matter of right and wrong--and those who practice such religions are pissing off the Almighty by making a mockery of His Church! Real Christians--especially Catholics--don't worship false gods and try to hide their false prophecies behind the Catholic Church!!! You can be either Christian or pagan--but not both!

I think PC language has gone too far and blows up in our faces.

This is one of the more interesting posts I have seen in the lounge.

I will tell you that:

We have an American flag in front of our house and have 2 guns.

I have a mid sized SUV -

We are having pork ribs for dinner and had hamburgers last night (I love to cook)

I would rather be shot than wear ugly fucking Birkenstock sandals

My husband works for the Feds (he is almost the only Democrat at the federal building)

I LOATH NPR and can only watch CSPAN for about 10 minutes before I feel suicidal from boredom

I have watched American Idol every year and hope like hell David Cook wins this season

I play Guitar Hero III with my 8 year old son on the wii

I go into WalMart to buy stuff - It is 2 blocks from our house and they have EVERYTHING

I wish I would never have to see one more woman who doesn't shave her armpits or her legs (I do it and so should they damn it)

Political correctness is fucking boring and I stay away from the DU for months at a time due to the namby-pamby bullshit that goes on in this place regarding this issue - It is a spot on the internet, get the fuck over it already.

I really like some of Arnold Schwarzenegger's movies - There, I said it! I love the Terminator series.

104. Smoke THIS
This is a great thread...

I think of myself as an extremely honest person, but I can't live up to all my own ideals -- I'm actually very hypocritical.

1) I believe that your kid should address the teacher as "Mr" or "Ms" or "Mrs." so-and-so. But when I entered 7th grade in a brand new school -- I started the habit (and got everyone else doing it too) there of calling my teachers by their first names. But WTF? It was in France, and there wasn't a single teacher (Americans) over the age of 22. I felt they didn't deserve it. Now I do! No matter how old they are (or aren't).

2) I literally weep for the suffering of animals but cannot stop eating bacon or cheeseburgers.

3) I no longer smoke, but I am to this day outraged that a business owner -- a BAR, for christ's sake -- cannot allow something that is legal to be a part of its business. If you don't like smoking -- don't go there. A bar-owner should be able to decide whether it's a smoking or non-smoking establishment, and then everyone can go whereever they want.

I'm new here so I won't go on too long. Just thought I'd throw in a few of my 2centsworth.

113. I used to like public radio
WDET in Detroit used to play diverse types of music every day. Now it's just a relay for feeds from NPR. Talk shows. I still like "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" though.

No Michael Moore fan either, but I thought "Sicko" was pretty good.

I like hunting (usually I fall asleep, but wake up feeling good), and I like target-shooting, and loading cartridges, mostly old military rounds. Camp Perry is on my list of summer destinations.

I have a smallish SUV, about 25mpg. Weather (and cargo/passengers) permitting, I use the motorcycle.

I think the borders need to be protected. All those illegal Canadians...

So, what's Liberal?
I want universal single-payer health care, like most of the developed world. And I want our troops brought home. Most of them. From the middle east, from Europe, from South America (I'm including DEA troops). I'm still thinking about our force in Korea.

114. Wowsers
What have ya'll done to my fellow DUers???? Have I stumbled into the lounge at the free-republic?
Hates: Veggies, Lattes, NPR, Volvos, Video-Games, Pot, James Taylor, Rachel Maddow, Same Sex Marriages, Birkinstocks, HIPPIES??!!1!1!?1, Recycling, toilet paper and tofu??? It is a wonder that I have not seen Stephen Colbert and Kittens on this list so far.

Likes: Bush 1, GUNS, Cheney, GUNS, Pro-Life, GUNS, War, GUNS, BUDWEISER?????, GUNS, American Idol, GUNS and the Star Wars Missile Defense boondoggle! So where's the love for BEARS????

Apparently the only way I could possibly fit in here is if I ceased to use the spell-check function because I am: a HIPPIE, and I LIKE: pot, NPR, GD-P, Rachel Maddow, Thom Hartmann, Ed Shultz and Nova M, lattes, (but can no longer drink ANY caffeine), Video Games, Kieth Olberman, I think same sex marriage is OK, think James Taylor and Carly Simon are just fine-(just not into either), LOVE VEGGIES, own a shot-gun but no shells and have never had ANY desire to see if it even functions, I like Michael Moore, I think my step daughter looks just fine in Birkenstocks, wished that she owned a VOLVO instead that Honda she zips around in, I absolutely adore Senator Obama and I don't care WHO makes my toilet paper!!!

I HATE: BUDWEISER-CHENEY-BUSH-1 (and bush 2 of course), race-cars, Billy the Talking Bass, 'Fake Wrasling' and I think that the Star Wars Missile Defense thingy helped stop the Cold War but is pretty much useless and a cosmic waste of $$ because we couldn't even shoot down one of Saddam's scuds back in Desert Storm much less an incoming nuke from Ecuador should we have the uncanny lack of common sense to invade Quito at some point in our insane future!

Wowsers, And to think, I let you nuts talk me out of Olive Garden!

144. That part surprised me a bit too
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 09:54 PM by nam78_two
Everything else I get-I mean tv or radio personalities, beer preferences, computer preferences etc.-those are all a matter of personal preferences. However, I didn't think urgency with regard to the environment was some sort of fringe liberal stereotype or identity politics. I thought of it as a core issue we were all very concerned about like the economy. Guess I never thought of it as something related to identity politics at all really-I always thought of it as a highly pragmatic concern .

I am not judging anyone at all-hell I don't do enough myself. I confess it scares me however.

This is probably representative of people overall though-outside of say a place like DU, a large number of people don't even accept anthropogenic climate change as a reality, let alone start moving toward permanent lifestyle changes to address that. Why would you make lifestyle changes for something you don't even really believe in?

I am a scientist so I work around people who tend to trust the scientific process and most of them believe that the consensus among our colleagues in the climate sciences is probably fairly close to the mark. I doubt that most models out there are entirely correct down to their finest details (this is a more complicated problem than most), but I do think certain types of human activity are having a disastrous impact on the planet. Most people I work with are also pretty worried by the environmental news that keeps coming down the pipeline.

Stuff like this:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3286732&mesg_id=3286732

However, I have also met a lot of educated and intelligent people outside of the sciences, who seem to have few issues with the way scientific research is conducted in other areas of science -specifically with regard to technology that improves our living conditions . However, somehow when it comes to climate science, they seem to feel that it is a highly shaky and unreliable science. So, I guess the general public has a rather high level of distrust with the science in that one area. I don't know how extreme environmental problems will have to get before people in general appreciate the effect that humans are having on the environment and start moving toward making permanent life style changes. Not to feel moral or superior, but because it makes sense, for the continued survival of our species (as well as others) to do so.

139. No offense meant to you, but this kind of attitude is why this thread was necessary
Progressives can be RIDICULOUSLY petty and judgmental, every bit as much so as conservatives, and too often are people made to feel that if they for whatever reason don't like hippies/NPR/Democracy Now/Michael Moore/vegan food that they are some kind of closet freeper (which you not so kindly implied in your post). You know, the people here who are saying these things have ALWAYS felt this way; they're just usually too intimidated by the DU Progressive Purity police to admit them out loud. This thread has been a nice catharsis and also a nice fuck you to the enforcers of progressive orthodoxy who try to divide us with this stupid cultural shit instead of valuing our shared commitment to liberal, democratic values.

Really, what in hell difference does it make to you if someone likes Budweiser? Are you seriously implying that they can't be a liberal Democrat if they like that sort of beer? FTR, I hate Budweiser, but I also don't give two flying fucks who does like it, or assume that it says anything about their political beliefs. You hate NASCAR, fine, I don't really like it either. But why are your eyes popping out like you just CAN'T BELIEVE that a Democrat could actually enjoy car racing? Oh, I hate pot, too. HATE it. I don't give a crap if you like it and it wouldn't bother me if it were legal, but really - getting high is part of the American liberal experience now? Count me out. And why the need to repeat GUNS in all caps multiple times? Are gun owners unwelcome on DU, even though the Second Amendment is still a part of the Bill of Rights, regardless of whether you care to indulge in hunting/shooting in your life? Are people who support liberal, progressive social and economic values to be scorned if they have interests that disagree with yours?

I could have added more to my post, but I thought what I had was sufficient. And I'd put my liberal bonafides up against anyone on this website.

147. No 'offense' taken, here is what being a liberal means to me:
President John F. Kennedy on being a liberal...
"I believe in human dignity as the source of national purpose, in human liberty as the source of national action, in the human heart as the source of national compassion, and in the human mind as the source of our invention and our ideas. It is, I believe, the faith in our fellow citizens as individuals and as people that lies at the heart of the liberal faith. For liberalism is not so much a party creed or set of fixed platform promises as it is an attitude of mind and heart, a faith in man's ability through the experiences of his reason and judgment to increase for himself and his fellow men the amount of justice and freedom and brotherhood which all human life deserves

I believe also in the United States of America, in the promise that it contains and has contained throughout our history of producing a society so abundant and creative and so free and responsible that it cannot only fulfill the aspirations of its citizens, but serve equally well as a beacon for all mankind. I do not believe in a superstate. I see no magic in tax dollars which are sent to Washington and then returned. I abhor the waste and incompetence of large-scale federal bureaucracies in this administration as well as in others. I do not favor state compulsion when voluntary individual effort can do the job and do it well. But I believe in a government which acts, which exercises its full powers and full responsibilities. Government is an art and a precious obligation; and when it has a job to do, I believe it should do it. And this requires not only great ends but that we propose concrete means of achieving them.

Our responsibility is not discharged by announcement of virtuous ends. Our responsibility is to achieve these objectives with social invention, with political skill, and executive vigor. I believe for these reasons that liberalism is our best and only hope in the world today. For the liberal society is a free society, and it is at the same time and for that reason a strong society. Its strength is drawn from the will of free people committed to great ends and peacefully striving to meet them. Only liberalism, in short, can repair our national power, restore our national purpose, and liberate our national energies.

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy

To this mostly 'political-liberal' view I add: Liberals are the ones to educate and through education remove fear and hate. We recognize that each human is unique and that those uniquenesses are to be celebrated not feared or hated. Sadly we find ourselves constantly defending against those who attack us or others. Those attackers do so out of fear, hate and greed. Liberals understand that we are human and so are prone to making mistakes. 'Diplomacy' is a good liberal watchword in my book. I hope that you now understand where I am on being a liberal and I TOO could write more but that should suffice.

You ATTACK my post, one which was written with good cheer in my heart and absolutely non-judgmental of others IN MY INTENT. I wrote it as a snark piece, NOT as an attack on YOU or YOUR values or the values of anyone else here. If I failed at snark so be it. I may be a poor comedian but I have utterly NO record here or anywhere else for that matter of being the closed minded hateful CHILD who impulsively attacks others out of hand for thinking different than I. (You COULD have asked what my intent was ya know.)

I compiled a list of likes and dislikes from this thread and thought to create a 'fictitious liberal'. If you went through this thread and did the same you could create a 'fictitious liberal' as well. Go ahead try it, compile and add up a grouping of the 'likes' and then do the same with the dislikes, now give a goodly bunch of those traits to an individual and guess what you would have? It would not appear very liberal now would it? It would be a caricature of something other than a liberal which was my intent. I was creating a caricature only. I even chose traits that in combination made the caricature more freeper-like than liberal like. Hence my references to freeper, go ahead, make up a list of attributes for a "fictitious freeper" then compare the two lists. I don't for even an instant think that each and every characteristic is attributable to each and every poster in this thread and I MOST assuredly don't think anyone here is like a freeper.

NOR do I judge ANYONE here for their personal lists. I could have expressed my fondness for American Idol or for the muscle cars I have owned for example. I could have confessed that I prefer smaller government and lowered taxes on the Middle Class. I could have gone on and on about how there is no better form of governance than democracy and how I feel the pull from those who fought and died defending American democracy here and overseas... but I chose to be different. I chose to try a bit of snark because this is the lounge for chrissake.

My use of 'GUNS' appears to have been something that bothered you. I used it often and in caps ONLY because it was used often throughout the thread. Liberals have been painted as ANTI-GUN nuts. (To a degree I actually am somewhat guilty as charged even though I had a lot of fun with BIG guns in my Army days in the early '70s). My use of it here had NOTHING to do with how I feel about guns, it had nothing to do with the thrills I once had nor did it have anything to do with the concerns I have these days. I don't scorn or ridicule ANYONE in the DU or anywhere else for owning guns nor would I feel this forum to be the appropriate place to be hauling out the 2nd amendment.

If you don't like my words now that I am being clear, please use the ignore button, if on the other hand, even after making my position as clear as I possibly can, you wish to continue on with your spiel, if you want to further paint me as something I have explained that I am not... well then that will be a different matter then won't it.

149. Your post didn't come across as "snark" at all, sorry
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 12:50 AM by WildEyedLiberal
I think it's a little ridiculous, given the tenor of your earlier post, to react so defensively. You seemed shocked that so many so-called "freeper traits" would be displayed by DUers, and also seemed upset at the alleged disdain for "progressive traits." I am pretty good at sensing when someone is being humorous or lighthearted, and I didn't pick up such intent from your post. Neither did the other people who replied to you - they seemed to echo your concerns, whereas I disagreed. I'm not saying you didn't intend it to be snark, but trust me - that did not come across as snark. Snark is typically very easy to spot and over-the-top ridiculous. Unfortunately, I've seen WAY too many serious posts like yours on DU to dismiss such rhetoric as a joke.

My point to you - which you do appear to have taken offense to - was that the idea of certain interests being seen as "freeper traits" or "liberal traits" is bogus to begin with. The reason this thread took off the way it did is because people here need an outlet to express beliefs, hobbies, or interests they may have that oftentimes earn them scorn from "progressive" scolds elsewhere on the board. You referenced the Olive Garden war in your post, and that is a perfect example of that kind of thinking. A certain poster here was viciously mocked because, OMG, she ate at an Olive Garden in New York City instead of some artsy indie restaurant. Now, *I* would have rather gone to an artsy indie restaurant in New York than an Olive Garden, but that isn't the point - the point is that the poster was the target of vitriol because she ate at a restaurant.

This kind of nasty judgementalism goes on ALL OVER DU ALL THE TIME, the coy implications that so-and-so isn't a REAL liberal :eyes: because ugh, he/she likes ______. And yes, the "GUNS" thing did bother me, because there are more than plenty of posters here who absolutely believe that anyone who owns/likes guns is a conservative and is not welcome at DU. No, I'm not joking. Perhaps you intended it as a joke, but far worse things are said about gun owners here that are NOT jokes. So given your post, and given the fact that such things are said daily on this site in complete seriousness, I certainly hope you can see that it wasn't out of order for me to assume you weren't joking. I am not familiar with your other posts, so no, I don't know enough about you to know that you were joking, and I wasn't making any assumptions about you personally, beyond what you said in your post.

I don't know if your invitation to put you on ignore is a challenge, but it's not one I plan to take. I have no problem with you and wasn't even upset with *you* at all. That's why I assured you that I wasn't trying to offend you. Trust me, if I am upset with someone personally, I won't promise not to offend them.

Edit: Love that JFK speech. It also sums up perfectly why I am a liberal. The Purity Police (not you) would be well advised to remember it when they are castigating other people for watching NASCAR or eating at Olive Garden or engaging in some other apostasy to their false progressive orthodoxy.

152. Thank you for the thoughtful response
I was at first angry and my response to you was motivated by this. After I went back and reread my post I see that I failed miserably at my original intentions. I noticed that others were equally impressed and in one case I am still at loss. (What was meant by my being proud to rape the environment??? I looked and looked and that one escaped me) My anger was childish and I apologize for it.

I did not partake in the Olive Garden Thread you referenced, I did not know that it was an open wound...the references I had heard were all snark: (breast feeding in Olive Garden and the like). I come and go out of the lounge rarely visiting for long so I must have missed it.

I agree in your analysis that there is a lot of quick and nasty judgementalism going on all over DU as of late. I believe it to be about 75% dedication to ones candidate, 15% still a race to many and 10% shit stirring by those not loyal to the democratic party at all!

As to guns: I have had fun with guns as a teen and played with the big guns on tanks in the early '70s. Nowadays I have no use for them around my home. My kid insisted that I keep a shotgun handy 'just in case' because I live alone now but so far I refuse to put any ammo in it. My issue is with all the accidental and intentional deaths caused by guns. You are one who can handle a debate without all the name callin and anger, perhaps we shall do that at some point in the future should I work up the courage to venture back into the DU gun forum. I do NOT look down, up, across or sideways at gun-owners nor could I box them in as only being Conservative. Four plus years of Anthropology does that.

Freeper traits...now that is something I am not getting apparently. Regardless of my poor attempts at snark I have not seen these things you mention in any abundance. Are you saying that folks are being called freeper because they are pro-guns or pro-life or some such??? Yes I tried to have a bit of fun with this but I was unaware that it was a sore point of concern around here. If I may take things bit further, there are values which are attributed to liberals and conservatives. This is a given, but most DUers are not conservatives regardless of having this or that value which is thought of as being predominately conservative. Maybe I am missing something in the DU.

Even with actual conservatives, the trick for me is in understanding that the very core to many of those values which separate us, are ones we share: Love of our Country and the desire to see an America which our children can grow up in that is equal to or better than the one we grew up in. For instance my freeper step kid now lives with his mother....She is a Republican Precinct Commander, a devout Christian and PROUDLY calls herself a neo-con. She operates a booth at republican functions. She has had her booth ransacked by overzealous Democrats and she has even been spat on by them. Why does she do this? Why does she continue on with her work? Well you and I already know that answer but those overzealous miscreants don't get it.

I suppose I am at loss here because I don't understand exactly why it is a bad thing to celebrate our differences. I would have NO PROBLEM at all guarding that republican booth from my fellow Dems. (I hate bullys!) I have encouraged her to continue doing what she feels is her duty to our country. I celebrate our difference! (Don't get me wrong, I could also enjoy a fierce debate with her and would be eager to have one if she gave me the chance!)

I meant what I said about liberals being the educators. You have just taught me something...in a good way and yet I have apparently missed something as well. Thank you, and please accept my apologies for getting angry.

171. Apology accepted
And don't worry about it, I of all people will never lecture anyone about getting angry at DU. :pals:

I think most of the judgmentalism comes from a holier-than-thou attitude. People who have strong opinions obviously think they are correct - I don't know anyone who holds an opinion they know (or admit) is false. This easily leads to self-righteousness. If a) I am right, and b) you disagree with me, then c) you must be WRONG. If you are wrong, then you are either 1) ignorant/misinformed or 2) stupid. If this were simply about political issues, it wouldn't bother me. After all, I think I'm right about universal health care/the war/gay rights, and people who disagree with me are wrong. But too often the political self-righteousness spills over into issues that are a matter of personal preference/convenience/cultural taste, and that is where the nasty Olive Garden type threads come from. I've seen posts on DU that assert that you must not be very progressive if you variously: a) shop at Wal-Mart b) watch NASCAR c) own guns and/or hunt d) watch porn e) join the military f) are religious g) prefer any large corporate entity (Starbucks, Olive Garden, Best Buy) over a small local independently owned retailer. Those are just some immediate examples that I have seen people receive scorn and mockery for from the "more progressive than thou" segment of DU; I'm sure there are more.

I don't necessarily *agree* with all of those things; I personally boycott Wal-Mart as much as I can, I think porn is tacky and juvenile, and I tend to not prefer corporate chains over local places, unless the local place in question is unfriendly/exorbitantly expensive/otherwise sucks. But what's the point of me getting up in someone else's face and saying "oh, you shop at WAL-MART??? SHAME on you!!!" I don't think that they can't be liberal if they shop at Wal-Mart, even though I hate Wal-Mart. Some people don't factor politics into every decision they make, and honestly, as long as they're generally aware and concerned about the state of the country, that's fine. I think what you're seeing in this thread is a huge letting off of steam from the people who are afraid that the holier-than-thou brigade will jump down their throats if they admit to liking going hunting or shopping at Wal-Mart sometimes. I do agree with lioness, though, that this same consideration doesn't really apply to those who say they don't accept core tenets of liberal philosophy such as compassion for the poor, rights for all, and social justice. The cultural stuff, though? Vive le difference!

169. I totally agree.
Issue positions that directly contradict the liberal values of openness, tolerance, and justice are not OK, but a lot of these things are just cultural stereotypes, like the Volvo-driving being "liberal" or Budweiser-drinking being "conservative." Cultural stereotypes just help the rightwing divide us.

119. Here are mine
1. I refuse to become a vegan. I tried once years ago and was hungry all the time.
2. My son is a Boy Scout and my daughter is a Girl Scout. I feel there are more positives than negatives about scouting. The Boy Scout ban on homosexuals and allegiance to God doesn't really bother me much.

3. I don't watch PBS or listen to NPR. Neither one of them interests me.
4. My children attend Catholic school. The public schools in Baltimore are terrible and the neighborhood school has one of the highest percentage of children who can't speak English.

5. My husband has a few guns
6. We sometimes go fishing
7. My husband owns a small SUV
8. I don't like lattes or fancy coffee drinks. I can't afford them anyway.
9. I use chlorine bleach in my laundry, mainly whites. I use ammonia to strip my kitchen floor before waxing it. I also use ammonia based cleaners on my windows and my stove. I can't afford environmentally correct cleaning products i.e. Ecover, 7th Generation, Dr. Bronners though I sometimes use baking soda as scouring powder and vinegar as a cleaner.

10. I don't subscribe to The Nation, Mother Jones, The Progressive or Ms. Magazine
11. I have mixed feelings about feminists. While I agree with them on some issues i.e. equal pay for equal work, domestic violence, I find other issues i.e. getting into male only clubs, politically correct language only makes matters worse. Also some feminists conform to the man hating sterotype which I find offputting and it distracts from their message.

12. I only have an AA degree and so does my husband. Neither one of our families could afford 4 year colleges for every one of their children so only the ones with the best grades went to college. I don't feel college is right for everyone.

13. I use some personal care products that were tested on animals. I try to avoid this, but I can't really afford the environmentally correct alternatives.

14. I don't feel hunting is bad. Deer are a real problem in Maryland and if hunters eat what they kill, I don't have a problem with it. However, I am against canned hunting.

15. I occasionally indulge in fast food (ie McDonalds, Chick A Fil A) and sometimes chain eateries such as Red Lobster, Outback Steakhouse and Applebees. I know some of these are big Republican donors but my family rarely eats out.

121. I go to church every week.

I have no interest in legalizing pot for casual non-medicinal use. While I don't think it should be subject to criminal penalties, I see no good in officially sanctioning it by law and I think if you are caught you should pay a fine. People who complain about not being able to smoke pot legally should find something way more important to complain about.

I don't go ga-ga over anything Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens puts to print and think that anyone who has a religious faith is automatically a bottom dwelling braindead sheep. Because that would make me a bottom dwelling braindead sheep by association.

I don't read Norm Chomsky, nor do I have a great desire to read Norm Chomsky.

I'm moderate on some hot button social issues like abortion and gay marriage.

I will partake in corporate chain restaurants and stores, and I will occasionally shop at Wal-Mart, although I don't really like Wal-Mart. Target is fine for me.

I have no problem with Southerners (and love the positive aspects of Southern culture) and think that racists can live anywhere, not just in the South. I think Robert E. Lee was a military genius and fascinating man.

And yes, I eat meat. Even veal. I'll plead guilty to pleading ignorance on the matter of meat, but it's just something I can't give up and although I can't see myself ever running a slaughterhouse or even taking in a fish I caught (whenever I've fished it has always been catch and release), if it's already dead not eating it isn't going to do anything (unless all of humanity decides to once and for all stop eating meat, but that's not happening.)

Shopping at "organic" food stores like Whole Foods and Trader Johns (or whatever it is called) looks like a waste of money for me.

I don't think American cars are crap. In fact, the best car I ever had was a very American 1994 Dodge Shadow, and my Toyota doesn't hold a candle to it.

I am fine with both our current Democratic candidates and although she has become less and less popular (and easier and easier to hate) on DU, I like Hillary Clinton.

Just because a celebrity might be a big Republican doesn't mean I must automatically hate everything he/she puts out. I will gladly watch a movie starring a Republican (although never been a big Arnold fan, but that's acting wise), and I think Curt Schilling is a hell of an athlete.

I think GM food is fine (probably).

I like meat.

I'm not a big fan of vegetables and kind of dislike Vegetarians (snotty, superior ones at least) and really dislike Vegans.

I don't get food from local Co-ops

I don't think shoving a bunch of money into a "feed the poor" program is the solution for poverty.

I only recycle 60 percent of the time.

I'm not all weepy and "sensitive" about everything.

I don't like riding mass transportation.

I'm for responsible use of nuclear power, including use on spacecraft.

Uh...many others.

142. Lets see here
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 09:03 PM by jasonc
I don't think I conform to a lot of the "liberal stereotypes" espoused here on DU.

lets see here:

I am a Marine.

I enjoy target shooting, and I own guns.

I am not very PC.

I eat meat.

I enjoy fishing.

I drive an expensive, gas guzzling German car.

I enjoy driving that car instead of taking public transportation.

I also am not offended by beliefs that are not exactly the same as mine, like some others on DU that try to hold themselves up as being the very definition of a "liberal" and put the rest of us down for not being as perfect as themselves...:eyes:

I think there are things worth fighting for, and I am very willing to stand up and fight for what I believe in.

I HATE birkenstocks, I think they are extremely uncomfortable.

Honestly, I think there are a lot of people here on DU that are not very honest about their beliefs and when pressed, certainly don't act in accordance with their stated beliefs...

edit: I forgot to add that I would sell my soul to the devil to fly an F/A-18 in the Marine Corps. I think that would be the BEST EVAR JOB IN THE WORLD!!!! I would do it for ever, happily, if I could.

150. I don't like hippies
Or boomers. Part of it's age - I'm a Millennial* or whatever we're being called today - and part of it is upbringing - my mom was a punk back in the day and never lost it (actually passed it onto us kids), and both sides are Labor Dems.

It's also the class thing. I've never known a poor hippie, all the ones I've known have been suburban, on the tall end of middle class, and blindingly self-righteous. Riding a bike in Critical Mass does not make you a superior being, pot does not magically connect you to the divine, and a hemp-based economy is not right around the corner.

I try not to be spiteful, I'm generally a nice person, I'm an ardent liberal, but hippies seem do disconnected from what's going on on the ground. I have the same problem with them that I have with Anarchists. There's this utopian impulse that's irrational, and counterproductive. We're a flawed people. I won't go as far as "inherently evil," but often (again, none of us excluded) selfish and short-sighted.

It doesn't help that there's a faction among them that likes to talk about how they were the greatest generation and "kids these days" won't amount to much.

I didn't plan on writing this much, but there was a thread in GD that set me off a bit.

*does capitalizing prove the accusations that we're too self-absorbed.

151. Interesting thread here, and it's about time I contribute...
First, not only do I go to church, I enjoy every second of it (except for the time I got stuck behind a guy who farted throughout the whole service).

I love animals, but I eat meat. I do respect everyone's choice to live a vegeterian or vegan lifestyle, though.

I've never owned a foreign car, a hybrid car, or a car that wasn't less than 10 years old when I bought it.

I've never done illegal drugs, including marijuana. I know there's a lot of good arguments for legalization, but it certainly doesn't bother me that pot and other drugs are illegal.

I consider myself pro-choice, but it's not really an issue I'm passionate about. Maybe it's because I'm a man, who knows.

I'm not one of those "soy mocha double latte" (or whatever) sippers. I don't care for coffee that much, either. I much prefer soda (and it's soda, people, not "pop" ).

That's all I can think of, for now. I'm sure I'll think of more after I post this :) .

I also think it's perfectly ok for humans to kill animals and eat them (provided the killing is done in a humane way).

I don't smoke pot. I don't even drink.

I think that sometimes violence might in fact be the answer depending on what the question is.

I think Starbucks is a waste of money.

But I do occasionally eat at Red Lobster.

I also care about what happens on American Idol.

I think porn is perfectly ok, and I suspect that liberals who try to make it into a feminist issue are secretly just prudes who can't admit their prudery to themselves.

I believe strongly in the power of science and scorn things like astrology, auras, crystal healing and so forth. I think it is totally irresponsible to spend all of one's time "meditating for peace" or whatever rather than actually doing something productive about the problems of the world (and I am embarrassed by other liberals who fit this fluffy, silly stereotype).

If I had kids I would homeschool them.

I think abortion is immoral.

I don't think all cops are facists.

My favorite video game is Grand Theft Auto.

On the other hand, I am very much a liberal in the following ways:

I recycle, I use natural pesticides in my yard, I shop almost exclusively at Whole Foods & Trader Joes, I take public transportation daily, we purposefully only own one car even though we could easily afford a second one, I am totally overeducated (and an insufferable elitist know-it-all too), I want socialized health care, my cats are my children, I always give money to homeless people when they ask, I think a woman's place is anywhere she wants to be, I LOATHE Bush with every fiber of my being and think he is the worst president ever, I fully support gay civil unions, and I am all for the separation of church and state.

159. I own guns
Ride a Harley with loud pipes clad in black leather

Drive a plain pickup truck with crank up windows and a rubber floor mat

Drink domestic beer and Wild Turkey

Love red meat, especially if I can smoke it and cover it in BBQ sauce

Drive a plain old pickup truck

Will respond to threats of physical violence by knocking the living shit out of someone without pondering alternatives first

I'm sure I'll think of more later :hi:

167. Self-labeled "conservatives" hate me
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 04:38 PM by DFW
I don't do alcohol or tobacco.
I've worked for the same outfit since I was recruited 33 years ago.
I've been with the same woman for 34 wonderful years.
We have two well-adjusted, normal children.
I have no debts, don't buy stuff I can't afford.
I believe in old-fashioned values (as in Thomas Jefferson, NOT Tomás de Torquemada)

Of course, in addition to not doing alcohol or tobacco, I also don't do religion.
Since I have no debts, I give to charities and the ACLU, Americans United, the DNC,
WOMR, environmental organizations, cancer research, planned parenthood, etc etc.
I support unconditionally a woman's right (that's "right," not "obligation") to choose
abortion if she sees fit, or if her doctor thinks it would save her life.
I do not support initiating military conflict, or forcing anyone to fight.
I do not believe that my country is the "best" country on earth. It is just "a" country
on earth. There are others. MANY others, in fact.

The radical right can't figure me out.

And they hate me for it.

This loses me exactly zero sleep.

I believe there is a God
I am for the death penalty (if there are eye-witness's)
I think most abortions should be illegal (morning after pill ok, mother in danger ok)
I'm not a pacifist
I won't go to Starbucks
I like the Ulitmate Fighting Championship
I think George Bush Senior wasn't that bad
I don't own a Mac

Most of the other liberal stereo-types apply to me.
