I'm Eating Hummus For The First Time |
|
it's...interesting, kinda bland, kind of good. i bought peta chips and peta bread. roasted garlic hummus, classic, sun dried tomato and forty spices. i may have just found an alternative to nachos.
anyway--just wanted to share this breakthrough with DU

1. Hummus quality depends on the brand, I find...or, |
|
you can just make your own. I LOVE hummus. On pita, in sandwiches, on crackers...YUM :9

39. Yep, season it the way YOU like it and it freezes well! |
|
I usually cook up 3-5 lbs of the chick peas, run them through in batches with lemon and a bit of olive oil, put in a big ol stainless steal bowl to season, mix, then fill pint containers and off to the freezer!
Great summer day lunch fare. A small container with some whole wheat crackers, a piece of fruit and some ice in the little ice chest and Havocdad has a satisfying lunch that doesn't overheat him when he is out in the field. No mayo sandwiches to worry about poisoning him!
Makes good wraps with a handful of fresh spinach.

Some hummus is as bland as paste made from styofoam, while some hummus is too good for words.

It's easy with canned chickpeas and you can adjust the balance of flavors to suit your taste. I like a humus with more garlic and lemon flavors than can be found in most supermarket varieties. Here's a link to a simple recipe: http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1618,132176-254196,00.html

:puke: I got totally spoiled by the fresh stuff my Turkische Mama makes. She cooks all day, every day. I do the dried beans (which keep very well), soak, remove hulls. Tried it once with canned and the taste wasn't there...

16. Hey, I said EASY not best. |
|
The brand of canned chickpeas makes a huge difference too. Some are terrible, others are close to home-cooked dried beans.
Please stop barfing hummus.}(

Had greeted hubby previously in the hallway. It was Manu's b'day. Banged on the door and told them I was gonna complain about the noise unless they allowed me to make some noise with them too! Her Syrian/German friend's uncle had whipped up this batch of baba g... Lawdy, GC, I thought I'd died and gone to gourmet land!!! If for no other reason folks need to reach out beyond their borders. It's the FOOD, baby, IT'S THE FOOD! Met some wonderful yung'uns that night.

|
They always have it at the dining halls, and usually the hummus is pretty good, so sometimes when I'm in a hurry (or nothing else looks good) I'll just get some hummus and pita bread. :9 Good stuff. Enjoy! :hi:
