I DON'T want what he's smoking, though. I don't usually let an actor's beliefs influence how I view his or her work, but I will never watch a Mel Gibson movie again.

3. I'm finding it very interesting to hear about his beliefs. |
|
I enjoy reading the Bible/the gospels, but I don't take it literally as he does.

9. I have nothing against Christianity--but |
|
this brand frankly frightens me. It was certainly enlightening to say the least to actually HEAR him articulating his beliefs though.

12. Yes, those who take it all literally frighten me as well. |
|
But I honestly noticed a sincerity as he talked about his beliefs, and he wasn't being obnoxious as fundie-types usually are. Seeing him talking about this himself, I think I have more respect for him than I did when just reading about him. I don't share all his beliefs, though I do share some, but I now do have some respect for him despite my disagreement with him.

probably a time zone difference. I'd love a chance to laugh at that guy.

17. Actually, I have more respect for Mel after that show |
|
He doesn't seem nearly as nutty as some of the articles I've read make him out to be. As some have said earlier in this thread, he has strong religious beliefs, and he did a good job of articulating them in a way I (a non-religious person who does not share his beliefs) could comprehend.
Also, the head of the Anti-Defamation League (I don't recall his name) stated that he does not believe that Mel or his film is anti-Semitic; he does believe that the film could fuel anti-Semitism, which is understandable considering how "Passion plays" have been used historically (the show provides some background on this as well).
However, Mel acutely inflated ego does shine through every word he speaks, which is why I ultimately turned the channel. And he is kind of wild-eyed. He reminds me a lot of some recovering addicts I've known.

|
He reminds me of Chimpy....arrogant,sarcastic,and very, very goofy. No wonder he likes bu$h so much...separated at birth, maybe? :scared:I never did like his movies and I won't watch them in the future either.

7. Is Mel a Bush supporter?? |
|
Yuck, that is SO gross. I always found him so attractive, too.
Oh well, Alan Alda's cuter, funnier and on my side.

10. I didn't see any arrogance there; I do see where you got the 'goofy.' |
|
He's a man who has very strong faith, very strong beliefs, and that may have come across to you as arrogance, but I didn't see it that way. Chimpy, on the other hand... lol

He just has very strong religious beliefs.
What is the deal with all the Gibson bashing here. He has done absolutely nothing to deserve any of it. It seems that alot of people here will bash anybody halfway religious. Maybe that's why we've lost alot of the religious vote.
I myself am not very religious, but i damn well believe in the right for others to be. And for them to be without ridicule

13. Not so much Mel as it is the leeches |
|
Yeah I agree with that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with him making this movie...and from the clips I've seen, it looks like a pretty good film.
I think where alot of the negativity comes in is the fundie leeches we dislike - the kinds who try to push their alleged morality on the rest of us via the political arena - who are really using this to whip up the true believers.
I'll see this movie, but I am gonna wait until the hoopla from these people dies down.

Yes, I hate the fundies like Falwell and Pat Robertson, but Gibson doesn't see to be like that. For a multi-millionaire, A-list movie star, he seemed very humble tonight. I will be seeing the movie opening day and I look forward to seeing it very much.

and it was not as bad as I was expecting. I do not blame him for being nervous...I am twitchy as hell when i am nervous. I have no problem with people who have strong religius beliefs. It is the right-wing fundie Rapture Ready crowd that I object to. I think that he has been wrongly attacked since the day this project was announced. No organization has the right to say what a film maker can and cannot put into their own self-financed film. That is a dangerous slope. If people object to the content, they do not have to go see it. Plus, he cannot be too bad...he made the comment about WMD's and is co-financing Michael Moore's new film. I will go see it and I am not a christian.

he isn't financing Moore's new film anymore, but that's alright. There's going to be a HUGE amount of controversy when Fahrenheit 911 comes out and I can understand Gibson not wanting to be a part of that.
btw, the WMD comment was pretty cool and made me like Gibson even more
