Does anyone else here get migraines from ingesting Nutrasweet (aspartame)?
I was at a Southern Living party earlier this afternoon, and I drank an iced tea that had aspartame in it.

4. I don't know what causes mine. Wish I did.
Lately, I just wake up with them during the night or in the morning. Weird. I almost always get one when it's hot and humid, though. (I hate summer for that reason.)

Is Nutrasweet a common trigger? Is it found in other forms, like in non-sugar items? I don't know if I'm ingesting it or not!

5. Look on the labels for aspartame (the generic name for Nutrasweet)
I can use Splenda (sucralose) or saccharin as a sugar free sweetener. But it seems like aspartame is in so many things (I cannot chew most sugar free gums because of it - I found a brand of sugar free gum at the Korean market that I can chew)

6. Thanks for the info.
I have tried to cut out sugar due to health concerns... I will check more closely for aspartame as well.

Hope you are feeling better.

10. I believe it to have caused my severe ocular migraines.
I quit ingesting the stuff and they pretty much stopped....for years. I have had one or two since but they were not nearly as severe. I first had a tunnel-vision attack and then the lightning bolt little light scratches on my vision began. My head would hurt and then my stomach would be upset. Not pleasant.

11. Ohhhhh, yes - yes I have.
I could never figure out what was going on with me. I was trying to figure out if it had anything to do with my "cycle" - so I could blame the migraines on hormonal changes.

Summer 2004 - I noticed I was coming down with the excruciating migraines on Sunday nights, so bad that I was missing WAY too many Mondays at work, and sometimes Tuesdays, too. Went to the doctors to get looked at (I had had a history of migraines in my teens) and he asked me a series of questions. He asked me what I've been doing on the weekends - which at that time, I was spending Sundays at my uncle's pool with my little boys. So we went through every possibility - was it the sun? the chlorine in the pool? That stuff never bothered me before. And then he asked me if I drink any alcohol - and I told him that I'm not much of a summertime drinker, but that I chug iced tea like there's no tomorrow. Ding ding ding!!!!! We got a winnah!

I called my aunt and uncle's house that night....sure enough - she uses NutraSweet for the sweetener.

I immediately stopped all use of the stuff, and have used only Splenda ever since. And not one migraine since I stopped.

I'm sorry, KW. I hope you can get some rest and shake the damned thing off; and stay clear of that nasty aspertame.

12. That shit's evil
Hey, brought to you by Donny Rumsfeld and his buddies at Monsanto. No need to be afraid--Nutrasweet, Agent Orange--it's all good!

Seriously, sorry it gives you migraines. I used to have those when my hormones were out of whack--nothing nastier. Hope you feel better soon.

13. Certain things with Aspartame
I drink a generic version of crystal light with aspartame, and that doesn't bug me, but there was one of the single serving packs that was an energy drink, and that gave me one.

I can always tell it was something I ate when I get a migraine within 1/2 hour of eating, or ingesting it. Hot dogs give me migraines, too.

I hope you feel better, migraines suck.

14. Best reason to not use aspartame
The CEO of Searle pharamaceuticals, when it was invented was none other than Donald Rumsfeld.

Right around the same time this picture was taken.....

16. Yup, me too
I avoid aspatame like the devil. It sets off terrible migraines.

The FDA says " there is no linkage between aspartame and migraines". The hell there isn't!

Khash.
