Has anyone else noticed that tv commercial makers have been getting their grubby lil hands...
... on some bang-up songs lately?

The ones that come to my mind immediately:

Prototypes "Je ne te connais pas"

Chemical Brothers "Galvanize"

Blindness "The Fall"

Steriogram "Walkie talkie man"

There are others, I just can't think of them atm.

1. When Mersades Benz started using Janis Joplin's song
in an ad (1995), irony reached new levels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes_Benz_(song)

<snip>
"Mercedes Benz", also known as "The Politician", is an a cappella song sung by Janis Joplin, in which she asks the "Lord" to buy her a Mercedes-Benz, a color TV, and a "night on the town".

Joplin wrote "Mercedes Benz" together with the poet Michael McClure and Bob Neuwirth, as a social commentary on how people relate happiness to money and material possessions. In the song she asks God to give her the things she has "earned

The song has been used a couple of times in car adverts. In 1995, Mercedes-Benz used the song in commercials for their cars <2>, creating irony. The song was originally written as something of a negative commentary about materialistic individuals who place too much value on items like a Mercedes-Benz. The song heavily reflects Joplin's view of what she saw as a materialistic world.

Joplin's sister owned the rights to the song and allowed Mercedes to use it. In 2007, Mercedes-Benz once again used this song in a commercial.

8. Along with Target using Devo's "Beautiful World"
Though, knowing the Devo crew, they probably really appreciated the ironic humor.

4. oddly... and some of you will find this strange...
commercials and television shows have turned me on to all sorts of artists i've never heard before.

i'm old. not hip. i tend to gravitate to things i know and like when i *scan* the radio while driving. songs from my day.

but when i watch the television shows and commercials (i know)... if a certain lyric grabs me i rush off to youtube with the bits of the lyric i can remember and i find all sorts of new artists i would never have known.

don't hate me because i don't own an ipod...
