Poll question: Ok DU, settle this bet.
Shortbus says no human has ever been eaten by a giant squid.

I disagree. I mean, in all the millenia humans have existed, you're gonna tell me NO ONE has ever gotten lost at sea (i.e. shipwreck, scuba accident, etc.) and been eaten by a giant squid?

Pa-LEESE. :eyes:

1. EDIT... did some digging and found some cool stuff
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 12:52 AM by LastKnight
EDIT: after some digging, giant squids ARE carniverous... but, no CONFIRMED sightings of live squids have ever been reported. this is because they live at depths that humans have not reached with equipment suitable to research them, it is also noted from carcasses that wash up occasionally that their blood would not carry oxygen well in warmer water, so they would not be able to come into shallower depths for very long. so i HIGHLY doubt anyone has been eaten by one of these...

Original msg:
they eat small plankinton or whatever its called... i think... im no scientist... but i dont seem to remember them having mouthes big enough to eat people.

i was probably thinking regular squid

5. This is an excellent point -- Hey, Dolo & Shortbus
Does the squid actually have to consume the person, or does the person just have to have been killed by a giant squid, like, say, through drowning or crushing?

7. they're carnivorous
The esophagus runs through the brain, so the food must be in small pieces before swallowing.
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/invertebrates/giantsquid/Giantsqprintout.shtml

So, yes, giant squid(s) have feasted on the flesh of mankind.

2. I know they find dead giant squids occasionally
but I have always heard that they have never seen one alive.

Is this so?

6. They live at depth to deep for most subs
They have never been seen alive, scientists know they are eaten by sperm whales. But as to the diet of the squids, that is not known, whenever they are caught in fishing nets or wash up on shore there is nothing in their stomachs.

20. however,
We are talking geological terms here. Giant squids may have had diferent feed or deapth habits even millions od years ago, at the dawn of humanity. Who knows if feeding becomes scarce at certain times of the year, forcing them to feed closer to the surface? Perahps a ship or sub, sank at some point in time, bring human flesh to a deapth closh enough to taditional giant squid hunting trails. Also , I would like to point out, that many marine animals go closer to the surface for mating. I do think giant squids engage in sexual reproduction (kinda like jellyfish wrapping their tendrils together or something like that). There are nearly an infinate number of ways a giant squid could have consumed human flesh. Please don't try to tell me they are herbivores at a deapth too low for sunlight. The clear answer herem is YES people. :eyes:

22. yes, its POSSIBLE
that they eat human flesh from shipwrecks, but its an animal, most animals prefer to hunt. from what ive read of this, this is one of them, they prefer live flesh over dead. im still thinking its VERY unprobable.

26. but NOT impossible
Over the course of 3 or 4 million years (dawn of humanity), even a very slight chance would be multiplied many times over. Ergo, giant squid HAVE feasted on man-flesh at least one point in time.

28. no... not really...
since the dawn of man we havent been crossing the oceans that these things are found, thats only been happening for the last few hundred years... this is assuming that the giant squid hasnt evolved in the last few million years... which granted, its probably a holdover from prehistoric times, but that doesnt matter if man was never introduced to the area, how would a prehistoric man get out that far in the ocean? that would have to be on the opposite side of pangea (the supercontinet the earth used to be configured in) and that is beyond reason.

that and your math doesnt make sense... even if the odds were 99% out of 100 that it has happened does not make it a fact. and a fact requires proof, you are presenting no proof. 99.999999 percent is not a certianty.

Giant squid live in a place humans don't go.

Now it's conceivable that a human CORPSE was eaten by a giant squid, but unlikely.

23. I remember watching an Arthur C. Clarke "Mysterious World"
On crypto zoology, and one of the animals they talked about was the giant squid. There were some survivors of a WWII shipwreck that talked about a giant squid picking of one of their shipmates. Unverifiable of course, but interesting none the less.

30. I saw 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at least four times...
as a kid, so I can speak with some authority. They may not eat humans directly, but they will eat a submarine if you don't have one of those electro/dynamo thingys. If they eat submarines, giant squids are, in fact, eating humans too. So there, Squids eat men!
