So, I just OFFICIALLY joined eHarmony today... |
|
I'd been a member since late last year, but I was kind of cheap and I wasn't entirely crazy about paying money for this kind of service when it';s (technically) possible to meet women just about anywhere. However, I'm 25 now, and perpetually single. I'm not exactly actively seeking a relationship, but I certainly wouldn't mind one either. So, today, I went on and paid for a (discounted) 3 month membership.
What spurred this on was a message that somebody wanted to communicate with me. The stuff in her profile seemed pretty compatible with me, so I decided to give it a shot. I signed up, answered her questions, and sent mine back. Now, I just have to play the waiting game...
...
Ehh, the waiting game sucks. Let's play Hungry Hungry Hippos!
So, as this is my official foray into the world of Intertubes dating, I guess... Wish me luck?

1. eHarmony has had alot of legal problems these days. |
|
Massive amounts of discrimination suits. Something about religious discrimination - and I've also heard something about racism, but I have yet to verify that claim. I'm not saying that it will have any affect on you, but I thought you'd want to know that they are apparently VERY selective in who they allow to use their services.
Having said that.....I have two friends who met their future spouses on the internets. One was in a chatroom for south Jersey residents; and the other one was through Match.com.
The one couple got married in 1999, the other in 2001. And they're very happy. :)
Much luck to you!!!

Yeah, I've heard all the stuff about the lawsuits and everything... If it weren't for their reputation at making very solid matches, I wouldn't have joined... But as you know through your friends, sometimes the Internets can come through. Hopefully I'll have some luck!

I tried them for a year a while back. No luck. their matches were absolutely terrible. A couple really interesting but slightly, um, unstable people that I met. I decided I was done when they tried to hook me up with a former house mate with whom I had never gotten along very well.
So I went to craigslist. One ad, one date, and now we are at 4 years, getting married in just under a month to the most wonderful person I have EVER known. Sometimes things just randomly align, and there is no way to predict it.

Yeah, I've heard about those. I've never been sent one, though. I've actually been given a lot of matches. I don't think I actually match up with a lot of them, but they send me matches pretty regularly. I guess I'm happy enough after all?

with eHarmony last year. She got lots of responses, and is currently dating a man she met through the site. He's everything she was looking for and then some, and they are apparently very happy. Hope you have similar luck!!

As I said above in this thread, part of the reason I decided to put up the money was their track record at finding very solid matches.

9. Their commercials creep me out. |
|
Is it just possible that people can be compatible, and not look enough alike to be fraternal twins?
I assume they do that on purpose, to visually suggest close matches, but here in the real world, very happy couples are often more than five years or two paint shades apart, and you'd never know that to look at an eharmony ad.

13. Very true. The commercials ARE pretty weird... |
|
But like you said, it's probably all about a visual thing. You don't see many couples that don't look somewhat similar in their commercials because, as humans, our nature sometimes tells us that if two people don't look somewhat alike then they're a "mismatch," and I'm sure eHarmony doesn't want to broadcast that message to people...

There's a white couple in it--I think the woman is blonde--who have the EXACT SAME smile and dimples.
Seriously, if they're not actors, there's some incest going on there.

11. My plan is to join a matchmaking service this year...... |
|
no shit.....I don't have an opportunity to meet guys and get to know them (guess I just hang around with too many women, LOL) so I think I will give it a shot. They apparently have a high matchup rate, and it's not very expensive. Worth a shot.

I have no expectations going into this, so just about anything could be a positive experience for me. I never expected to be the type of person to go to an internet site to get matched up, but I was thinking about it a few months ago, and I realized I'm more or less emotionally ready to be married. Of course, that's a VERY long way from ACTUALLY being ready, but still...
I know a lot of friends my age who are getting married or who are already married, and I don't go out to a lot of places where it's exactly easy to meet women. So, after a lot of thought, I just decided I'd bite the bullet and give it a shot. Worse case scenario, I don't really meet anybody and I'm out $50.

16. Lots of people here don't like eHarmony, but 2 friends met their spouses there. |
|
I have no clue what it is in their personality profile that filters people out, but the majority of complaints about their service stems from people they reject because of their test scores. I've heard that they reject for everything from scores that indicate that a person is unhappy, to scores that indicate conflicts or inconsistent opinions about a particular subject.
Another common reason for rejection is the lack of any potential matches for your personality type. My understanding is that you can take the test and have NOTHING wrong, and they'll still reject you if they simply don't have anyone to match you with.
For the people who do get into the service, however, my understanding is that they're one of the best routes for finding someone you'll get along with. One of my ex's, who is still a friend, married a guy she met on eHarmony last year. Another friend has been married four years now to a woman he met on eHarmony. He actually had a bit of a problem because they matched him with several women in his area. He went out with all of them, and got along great with them ALL. I shit you not when I tell you that he only pursued the relationship with his now-wife over the others because she's a redhead and he's always been weak for redheads. He could have easily had a happy relationship with any of those women.

17. I've heard about those problems quite a bit too. |
|
I'll admit, the questions are pretty specific, but they're a little vague. I'm not happy every single day. Sometimes I'm a little happy, sometimes I'm very happy, sometimes I'm downright miserable. There are shades of gray in the personality profiles, but there aren't very many shades.
I was stunned at the number of matches they've sent me - probably close to 200 now. A lot of them closed on me, but that's to be expected. There are a few who seem very compatible with me, so I suppose I'll just look around and see what I can find.

Since I listed myself as a progressive liberal who doesn't want children (other than to be a stepmom), and who is into health and fitness, I don't know how in the hell they decided to send me those guys.
Now that I've hit my 40s it's time to give up! But I hope that you do better than I did. Women hugely outnumber men anyway, so statistics are on your side.
