Poll question: Level of service at your bank?
So, how would you rate the service at your bank? I absolutely hate mine and will be switching in about 2 weeks.

My bank received my paycheck last Thursday, and as of this morning, it still had not posted to my account, causing me to miss the payment deadlines on some of my bills. After being on hold for 1/2 hour, they finally said that my paycheck will post by midnight, tonight...

They are a military bank (not USAA) based in Ft Worth, if you were wondering...

I used to work in bank data processing
and there were VERY STRICT RULES about posting - no WAY could it go past 24 hours. I worked in Austin and if a posting delay went past 18 hours we would have to perform disaster recovery in Waco. You need to get a different bank; something is amiss with that one.

15. I work for a bank now...
and nothing may be amiss. They also have very strict rules about deposits and when they post. An ATM deposit on Friday at my bank after noon would not post to my account until tonight. A deposit (even cash) at the bank after 2 on Friday would not post until tonight. (Remember that Monday was a holiday which acconts for one those days.)

I think it is crazy but that is how it works.

1. I use a credit union. 2 of them, in fact. Both provide excellent service.
www.gtfcu.org - mostly for Texas State Employees
www.rbfcu.org - mostly for military members. I opened my account when I was a military dependent.

5. Credit Unions are great!
Mine is really good. They only have eleven branches, so they don't have a 'corporate' feel. Everybody in my branch knows me by name, which is a nice touch.

One of the biggest perks is the service fee structure. I pay $8 per month on the chequing account, and have unlimited no-fee ATM and debit card access *anywhere*, unlimited internet banking, plus free money orders and investment advice, and a bunch of other little things. No hidden fees, no extra charges.

However...last year they replaced their traditional phone system with a third-party 'call centre'. Hopefully that's not indicitive of a change in direction...

6. Well, I have Bank of America
And I pay $0 a month on my checking account, have unlimited no-fee ATM and debit card access, also unlimited Internet banking and lots of other perks. So how is your credit union any better than a bank?

8. My CU checking accounts are no-fee and have many no-fee ATMs.
The best thing about credit unions is that I as an account-holder am really a part-owner. I'm allowed to vote on the CU board members, so I have some input as to the direction of the CU.

11. Ever tried to get a B of A person on the phone? Or how about how they
insist on linking your checking to your credit card account, and when you go over your limit, you credit card gets nailed, plus fees?

Heaven forbid your account gets hacked, your credit card gets stolen, or your id is stolen; they have NO sympathy, no concerns and will bill you for every dollar they can, for as long as they can.

17. Not true. I work for Bank of America
and you DO NOT have to link your accounts to your credit card. And, if you report fraud, your account is frozen and up to 1000 is immediately made available again. They will also "hold" checks you list until the issue is resolved and they can clear them.

25. BofA is my other bank.
That's where we keep our "hush money" or our VEGAS money. I have no problems with them either. One of the reasons we opened accouts there was because of the ATM's. My bank (UBOC) doesn't have enought ATM's nearby.

12. I'm On The BOD of Mine
We're a community chartered credit union, which means it's open to the public, so basically it's a bank that thinks of its customers as member/owners.

We have a huge array of services (VISA Classic, Gold, Platinum, IRA's, Savings, Checking, Business Accounts, 1st and 2nd Mortgages, Car Loans, HELOC, Money Market Accounts, and so on, and so on.)

I've been on the board since about 1990 and we always hear good things from the members about the quality of service. We are ultra light in fees and keep our rates competitive or better.

So, the whole CU philosophy lends itself to extreme priority given to customer service. They're not numbers, they're owners.

2. I love my bank
We have had our checking account there 4 yrs. And they just sent us a letter that they will cover all of our future over-drafts up to $350 at no extra cost to us.

Now my parents are at a different bank, and have been doing business with them for over 30 yrs, and their bank will not provide the same service.

Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 12:22 PM by VelmaD
I bank in a little town near my home town. Celeste, TX population 357 or something like that. The vice-president of the bank has known me since I was a baby. He did the loan on my car sight-unseen - just asked me to drive it in sometime so he could see it. :) The tellers recognize my voice over the phone and know me by name. They'll even turn around and call me back so I don't have to call them long distance from Austin if it's going to be a long call. Plus I pay no fees for my checking account. They are the nicest bunch of people you'll ever meet in your whole life and I am NEVER leaving my little bank for one of those impersonal behemoth banks. NEVER.

18. I used to have "posting" problems with my old bank.
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 01:06 PM by skypilot
I used to bank with PNC. They were the worst. My finances, or rather my "finances" are VERY simple. I don't have any credit cards, no outstanding debts, no mortgage (I rent) and I write ONE check a month. Everything else I pay with cash. PNC couldn't manage to keep even that straight. I'd make a deposit and then get notices that I was overdrawn. The last time I had this problem my deposit had actually cleared (after 3 business days) and the money was in my account. Suddenly, one day the money was NOT in my account. I eventually got it straightened out and then closed my account. They never gave me an explanation for what had happened. The funny thing is that these problems would almost always happen during the first week of the month when I'd be writing a check for rent. I would be taking my life in my hands every time I wrote a rent check even when there was money in my account to cover it. Suddenly, the money would be gone and my check would bounce. I would then have to go to the bank and the tellers would treat me as though I was someone trying to scam them. I had this problem several times and often ended up dealing with the same two bank employees. You'd think that as soon as they saw me they'd immediately check to see if my last deposit had been posted, and posted properly, since that was always the problem I seemed to be having with them. No, they'd look at me blankly and try to give me the brushoff or act as though I simply wasn't keeping track of my money; and every time I'd produce a deposit slip showing my last deposit and then they'd deign to take me seriously. The WORST bank ever.

19. My bank is awesome.
I still bank where I first opened a checking account when I was 13 years old. In fact, it's the same account!

Small-town service, yet the management has done a great job putting the bank into the information age (online banking, telephone banking). So good in fact that I can live over 30 miles from the nearest branch office yet not miss a thing. I hope I never have to change banks.

21. Funny you should ask...
I belong to a local Credit Union...last week I looked at my on-line statement from the Credit Union and found they had deducted $500 out of my account (I never use it at all - just keep it as a money dump).
I went over there and found it was ANOTHER credit union from another state that had mistakenly auto-debited MY account for someone elses car loan. They stayed on the phone to the other bank till they found out the problem... (the money was replaced that afternoon)...I guess that's good service, but it's pretty scary. That's why I love on-line banking...I would never have had a clue anything was amiss if I wasn't keeping track...(until the paper statement arrived later in the month). Oh yeah - it freaked them out pretty good too.

27. steadily declining
when it used to be NBD (National Bank of Detroit), I had no problems. When it initially became Bank One, I had no problems.
Over the course of the past year, I have almost closed this damn account because Bank One's service is so shitty (whether you are in the bank or on the phone). They posted a $1700 check TWICE, which made all subsequent transactions bounce. I noticed the error and asked them to fix it,which they did, but it still took three more communications for them to erase all overdraft charges because of their mistake.

Never ONCE during this whole process did Bank One admit responsibility for this mistake or offer me ANY sort of apology. they suck.

29. Two different credit union accounts. No banks.
I prefer cooperatives to for-profit ventures with my money. Credit unions don't nickel and dime you to death with stupid little fees for everything the way most banks do. Their fees for things like overdrafts, etc., tend to be far lower, they don't charge you ATM fees, they don't charge a fee for using SOMEONE ELSE's ATM, they don't charge you to actually see a human teller, etc.

31. I use Wachovia and they're good
Wachovia (based in Winston-Salem) and First Union (based in Charlotte) merged recently and moved operations to Charlotte, where all the other large Carolinas banks are headquartered. I was fearing the worst, but so far the only real differences I've noticed are that it's easier to find a bank (all of the old First Union branches are now Wachovia branches), the logo is different and there are three more digits in my account number. They claim to have a special program for companies that do direct deposit and register with them--lower fees and so on--and I may sign up for that.

Do I love my bank? The last bank I loved was the Navy Federal Credit Union in Seoul, but I like Wachovia.
