What is your favorite label for your politics?
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 04:17 PM by anti-NAFTA
I call myself a socialist. How about you? Please limit your response to one word.

edit: And explain why you like that word. I like "socialist", despite its derogatory connotations in this country because it implies leftism but doesn't sound genteel like liberal or wishy-washy like progressive.

Means we want progress. The other major party wants to take us back to some idealized 1950's sitcom.

13. "Left Conservative"
I steal Norman Mailer's term for himself. Ultimately, I am skeptical of anyone telling me their theory of government is the Gospel truth. Nothing is as black and white as many ideologues make it out to be. I do not necessarily disagree with any liberal perspective, but I am open to other ideas.

15. democratic socialist--admit it!!!
I think most democrats are socialists are heart. We don't want 100% socialization of industry because that would kill the goose that laid the golden egg..but almost every democrat wants higher taxes for the rich and generous welfare programs for the poor...We are just afraid to admit it in public because the so called "moderates" would be afraid of this agenda...I'll never understand it.

At some point it just becomes semantics. I'm a socialist, Social Democracy is inclusive of that.

I'm sure there's somebody here who is enough of a political history geek to expain the difference. I just know that there's the Social Democrats of American and the Democratic Socialists of America and they seem to hate each other over stuff that happened before many of them were born.

32. independent
because, while I am these things:

progressive
leftist
socialist
libertarian

I believe in equal rights and equal opportunity for all.

I also believe equally in personal and social responsibility.

But I don't really fit any label or group. I'm always on the "fringe," so to speak, and have never truly felt well-represented by a group or a label.

sElection 2000 was my wake-up call. Before then, I called myself a moderate or a progressive. I finally said :wtf: on December 12, 2000, and have called myself a liberal ever since.

37. what's the dif between liberal and progressive?
From my own observation, progressive is just a new term for liberal since liberal has become a dirty word. If they're the same thing, then I'm an unabashed, proud LIBERAL! I love the word, admire what it represents and refuse to go by another term just because it sounds better. But, if they're two different things... well, then I might be a progressive.
