An Analysis Of Cat Puke (And The Puking Cat)
ok.

over the last 5 years or so, i have made and documented some observations on "The Puking Cat."

quite an interesting study really. the odd behavior of the puking cat is a mystery even to this day.

but, some observations:

1) if the cat has finished gorging itself within a 10-20 minute window, chances are the cat will puke in the middle of the expensive area rug adorning the living room. NOT the wood flooring surrounding the rug mind you as it is obvious that puking cats prefer their puke land softly and gingerly.

2) if the cat more recently has completed its gluttony, and has not yet made it to said expensive area rug, it's natural instinct takes over and it is likely the puke will end up in the very CORNER of the room making it extremely difficult to clean up. this is obviously the natural progression of the cat puke that it should end up wedged between floorboard and corner molding requiring wet sponges and minor flooding to rid the area of this mysterious substance.

3) if the cat happens to be perched upon high at the time of puke-dome, it is only natural that projectile vomiting is the preferred choice. puke MUST (and i stress MUST) be flung as far as felineily possible for maximum coverage. again, this is a trait that must have been ingrained in the wild for territorial purposes.

That is all.

Wild Kingdom will return next week with a fascinating look at the sexual habits of the male guppy.

Good Night.

7. I don't think that's the problem.
I have 2 cats, one pukes pretty regularly and the other doesn't puke at all. It doesn't matter what type of cat food I give either. I can feed her the most expensive and healthy I can find or I can feed her the cheap stuff, she still pukes. Two vets have looked her over and found no health problems and have told me some cats are more prone than others.

It's always a race here to see who cleans it up first, me or the dog. So far we're 50/50 cos he's a fast little guy.

9. why bother if the dog is willing to clean up the mess
Sounds like you have a solution - maybe you might want to let Matcom borrow the dog.

13. Because the dog
has a delicate constitution and when I let him have at it, I run the risk of having to clean up his back-end mess. Of course this is the same little dog that can eat one of those packets they put in foods to keep the food dry and suffer no consequences except a dry nose.

(However, it cost Mom 98.00 to make sure the little guy didn't dry up inside.)

We trained ours to chase kitties to bare floor at the first sign of puke-potential. :-)

11. I've noticed that the puking cat....
will also puke at times of their humans lightest sleep.
ie just as the owner is waking or falling asleep.

12. Have you noticed they always back up the length of a human foot
while vomiting? It cannot be coincidental.

15. Have you ever noticed when they do it at night
it's usually smack dab in the path to the bathroom? Coincidence? I think not!

21. Y'know, you get into bed, you turn the light out, and BWAK-BWAK-BWAK
They've had all day to spit up, but the fuzzy little devils wait until you finally settle in for the night, and pow!

I always get out of bed and clean it up, 'cause I *know* I'll forget about the next morning, and that means...squish!

GRRR!

17. I'm very fortunate to have a cat that runs to the hardwood floor
each time. And it's always a nice solid healthy poo-like consistency, I can usually see the bits of animal that triggers the vomit.

19. You forgot the 'hidden puke' option.
That's where the cat pukes in a shadowy area, or right at the edge of something, so you don't see it until you step in it.

22. My big cat, Cappy, gobbles his food
then pukes it up, then ... eats it again. I keep telling him cats don't do that, but so long as I don't have to clean it up, what the hell. He'll eat the other cats' puke, too, except hairballs. Like having the world's quietest dog.

I can't tell you how many times my cats have come all the way upstairs, jumped on my bed and THEN hurled.

26. Anyone remember the SNL skit?
Of the cats making the world-recognized "noise" and "movement" for puking?

"<puke noise>! The hairball remedy so good, cats ask for it by name!"
