Today I'm giving notice to my unethical employer
Edited on Thu May-08-08 11:29 AM by NYCparalegal
Edited to add: yes, I have another job starting May 19.

Question: if he asks why, what reason should I cite first?

1. You are one unethical sonofabitch and I've had it with covering up your crap.
2. I had to beg for my paycheck every Monday. A few times I didn't even get my check until Thursday or Friday.
3. You know shit about immigration. In fact, you know more about chaos theory than you do about immigration, and you have me do your work.
4. As 3 above, with the addition of: I'm doing your work at $13 an hour while you are hardly ever in the office and don't do diddly squat.
5. You think you are funny and clever and you are neither.
6. You are a terrible boss (for reasons 3 and 4 above).
7. In addition to doing YOUR job, I have to file your crap that you pile on your messy desk along with the piles of dirty tupperware and forks sticky with unknown food stuffs, despite the fact that you could easily do that yourself, since you do nothing else.
8. You want me to praise your baby daughter as the most beautiful thing on the planet, when she instead is rather ugly. Yes, I said it... she's FFFFFFFFFFF-ugly!
9. You think our immigration business will be booming because you take me for granted and you think I won't quit, as I'm about to do. Now we shall see MWAAHAHAHAHHAHAH!!!
10. I know you haven't declared to your partner or your wife (the other paralegal who handles the trust account) all that your clients have paid you.
11. I know you have screwed up on two immigration cases that, should the clients involved find out, will trigger the Bar coming after you and I hope they do.
12. I know you have given people the wrong advice on immigration matters because you know jack shit about it.
13. I know you're not always in court when you say you are.
14. I know that 13 is true because many of your court appointed clients get arrested for Failure to Appear warrants and you act surprised this happens.
15. Stop taking clients in counties far away if you know you're going to get their cases continued forever because you're too lazy to make the long drives (note: some of his cases have been on the calendar for over a year!!!).
16. I am not your secretary, I am not your personal assistant.
17. More importantly, after next Thursday I am NO LONGER YOUR BIATCH AND EMPLOYEE!!!

Fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you, you unethical troll. Here's a tip... buy a friggin deodorant and some toothpaste or gum on occasion. You're evidence that anyone can get a law degree and pass the bar.

Ok, I feel better. Rant off!

6. Sorry, Tuesday Afternoon
I'm sure something will soon turn up. I went through hell for the past 11 months, thinking I'd never find anything in this town, thinking about quitting without a job because things were/are so bad. And then this other job showed up.

Hold on and vent/rant. I find that really helps.

13. Sounds like my soon to be Ex Boss
Edited on Thu May-08-08 12:15 PM by NYCparalegal
Office hours are 830-530. I am the only Spanish speaker in the office. I get here at 8 am. I hardly take my full hour lunch. I leave at 6pm almost every night. I get paid hourly and I have never asked for overtime. Yet, he accounts for my every minute and second, even calling me at the office at 8 am, when I'm not supposed to be here (I have since stopped answering the phone) and keeps asking my why I take a day off here or there.

Your boss and my boss should get together and, by virtue of their sheer stupidity, they shall annihilate one another.

14. That last sentence --

Thanks, I needed that. I leave for work in a few minutes. I hope there is a message on my phone when I get home this evening. It would be nice to have an interview tomorrow morning and turn in my notice tomorrow afternoon. That would make for a really good week-end!!

2. I am thinking if you cite any of those reasons....
you may not get a glowing reference.

If you dont need one, go with number 5.

3. LMAO... 5 is a good one and no, I don't need his reference
I have plenty of excellent references from actual immigration attorneys, not those who pretend they are.

To all looking for a job out there and having to deal with a psycho/unethical/deranged boss... hang on! There is hope.

5. Oh yeah... I start May 19th...
This is coming at the perfect time too, just as *I* got him more immigration business which requires a lot of work and he keeps asking how WE can get it done quickly, where WE translates as ME, because the poor thing knows nothing about immigration and does no work at all.

Funny story... He came to my office the other day asking me to join him in a "money dance" hoping we'd get this immigration business which will bring in nearly $15K (note that I got this on my own; he didn't talk to the client at all; I explained it all) and I asked him point blank... "Am I going to see any of that money?" and he looked flabbergasted and suprised, but obviously ready to reply with a No! but before he could utter it, I exclaimed, "See? That's why I'm not doing the money dance." What a pr!ck

7. My advice:
Do not burn your bridges.

It's simply not worth it.

9. I'm not going to...
in fact, I will offer my services as an outside consultant AS LONG AS I GET PAID IN ADVANCE and it will be far more than a paltry $13 an hour.

But I am not going to play nice and just forget about all the unethical crap this guy does. I like most of our clients and I don't see why they should pay for it. Immigration law, unlike other fields of law, really affects someone's life. If you don't buy a house, big deal... there are others. If you lose your lawsuit, it happens.

But if you get denied for US citizenship or a green card because your lawyer fucked up and tried to cover it up, there's almost nothing you can do and your future, as well as your family's future, is up in the air.

This being said, though, I am gravely concerned about a very glaring case of malpractice, which I mentioned in a previous post last week.

17. Hope somebody files a grievance with the NY State Bar.
That might help. Don't know how much teeth NY's bar has.

18. Sadly, I'm back in NC now
The NC Bar regularly investigates complaints and handles them rather fairly, IMHO. UPDATE: I told him I was leaving without telling him a real reason (just that I'll be making more $$$) and he took it surprisingly well.

11. Congratulations!
I did the same thing recently, except my unethical employer was a catholic hospital. Funny how the cross can shield so much these days. But for you, way to go! You sound like you've got the internal drive to do great things with your life.
