Predict your Obama VP now - I'll save this, and we'll see who's right when he announces
Make your predictions as to who Obama will pick as his VP. If you want to choose more than one, list them in the order of highest probability first, lowest last.

I'll save this thread, and when Obama announces his VP, I'll bring it back and we'll see which DUer or DUers got it right. And for those DUers who make multiple guesses, we'll see how close they were.

Make a prediction!

46. You mean Kathleen Sebelius, right?
I would definitely peg her as the most likely. And I'd toss in Richardson for his energy credentials. I don't see Edwards, because he won't help Obama win many votes. Sebelius is VERY well liked in Kansas (her lieutenant gov is a former repub, as are many people in her admin), and she is the president of the National Governor's Association.

She would be a perfect addition to the ticket with her hardcore supporters, and a lighting rod for the right. It is the XO that should be the one taking the heat, plus Cheney's VP's powers precedent gives her great latitude for getting her healthcare program running.

historically, the VP has been a puppet figure, relegated to attending State functions, doing the President's bidding, and "running" NASA. I think we should go back to that model.

I think Bill Richardson is a good pick but also someone from the South maybe to "balance" the ticket..Thats why I doubt it would be Dodd or Biden.
John Edwards also seems to be someone likely. I also wonder about Jim Webb.I have heard that name tossed about. He is an anti-War pro military guy.

I think Richardson would sew up the Hispanic vote and give McCain a run for his money throughout the southwest, and maybe even in his own state.

Webb would bring in a lot of blue-collar white voters, particularly the Scots-Irish. He might also bring home Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. :D

72. My thoughts (and a VP guess eventually)
I want Edwards to be the AG. It's the perfect fit for who he is, his issues and what he ran on. VP may be a more prestigious position but it's not where he can do the most good.

Don't forget John Edwards is more than just a former VP nominee and Senator...he's one of the best lawyers in America. I can see him making his credentials stronger and making the jump from AG to future Presidential candidate (2016, 2020, or 2024) easier than I can see him making that same jump from the higher position. VP is awesome, but it might be a waste of his best talents. In any case I don't think we've seen the end of Edwards on the national stage even if he does not join the next Democratic presidency. If not as AG, I think he's probably on the short list for SCOTUS nominees by a Dem. President because being a former Senator, he'd face little opposition in confirmation.

Likewise, as much as I like Wes Clark, I think he's better suited to a role other than VP. His diplomatic and military experience provide him with the skills to actually fix the problems created by the Presi-dunce within the military and DOD as Sec. of Defense; likewise his connections in Europe from heading NATO would allow us to go a long way to repairing our strained diplomatic relationships quickly, making him an ideal candidate for Sec. of State. (Not that she'd take it but I feel this is also a role Sen. Clinton could excel in. Also one which is suited to Richardson) Alternately, his warrior's mentality, combined with that military and diplomatic experience and the fact that he's a strong strategist, would serve him well as Sec. of Homeland Security. (Also, he makes it difficult for conservatives to argue we're not serious on the issue of national security.) Again, I think the lower position better frames his strengths in terms of setting-up a future presidential run.

I admit it, I want a "dream team" cabinet.

As for VP, I don't really care. It's a figurehead position...pick someone who can debate. I suspect they're going to be debating against Huckabee and I'd like to see them make him look like an idiot. He might be the new posterboy of the extreme Rel. Right but if we can kill his political career, he's the end of them too. That excites me as much as the thought that we may have stabbed the life out of the DLC and left to bleed in it's bed. Oh yeah, No DLCers for VP! I'm very excited for this election cycle...more than anything else I think the roots may be laid for a long Democratic dominance and rise of a new group of Democratic stars to lead the party for the next 20-30 years.

My VP guess: Chris Dodd. A poor choice IMO, but he's been angling for it from behind the scenes since Iowa and I think he'll get it. Also, he's very popular in Iowa. They may not have voted for him...but I heard quite often what a nice man he is from people interviewed on TV. (One of our local news affiliates here in CT sent a reporter to cover his candidacy.)

73. This thread is premature. Hillary could totally pull this out
if a really large comet managed to escape detection and struck the earth with Obama right at the center of impact. Of course, if that happened it would take out three or four of Hillary's home states and millions of hardworking white voters who didn't go to college, but then we'd see the wisdom of her lava-proof pantsuits, and the few thousand people who remained would beg her to run the dark, frozen remains of our country.

74. Daschle, Edwards, Clark
I'd like to see Edwards as AG and Clarke either as Sec. of State or Sec. of Defense, with well-liked, former Senator Daschle to massage the Senate. Hmmm... maybe that army general that Bush canned for saying we'd need a half-million troops to occupy Iraq should be SecDef. Kryzinski, or something like that?

Unless Daschle wants to take on John Thune in 2010, of course.

I really don't want to lose any current Senate seats for a Veep. We might need them to overcome Repub filibusters. So as much as Dodd, Biden, Clinton, Webb, and Feingold are good, solid, effective Democratic politicians that would make good candidates, I would rather have somebody else. Preferably a former governor.
