Rusty is going to the vet.
Last night, coming home late, I noticed dried red on his left talon. I first thought it was doo or food as both are red, but then I noticed the water having a red tint and an odd smell. Still thinking it was food, it was ruled out as I saw Rusty preen his talon and none of it went away.

I called the vet ER, and they said as long as the bleeding stopped, which it had, he can wait to see the regular vet.

Fortunately, it's only the toe nail - bent to one side and he can still perch with it, so there are no broken bones. When perched on my finger, the scab broke off and he bled a tiny bit. :(

I've removed a couple new toys that might have been the culprits, but they have no stains on them. (doesn't mean he didn't get injured on them, but I am taking NO chances.)

I'll be getting the relevant tests done; while I don't think he has any infections from the injury, I don't want to take any chances, nor lose him. He's been too good a bird.

2. I hope Rusty is okay
I was thinking about you and your birdie at the pet store the other day cause they had a sun conure on display..I would like a pet bird someday..but not with two cats who drool at the birds outside the window.
Let us know what the vet says...

3. Thanks!
Though you'd be surprised at what some birds can do. :D (Parrotlets, birds the length of a finger, have been known to dive-bomb cats...)

Birds are unique, very social, and very intelligent animals. (and creatures of prey so when they feel scared by a new toy, I can't blame them!) I've thought of getting a living room cage so he can be busy in there when I'm studying SQL server. Right now he'll play on the stand, then jump off right onto my hand.

Still, knowing cats, it's for the best. Though I ought to post the pic of the cat at the vet, when looking at the parrotlets...

11. Just got back from the vet ER
Couldn't get his toe to stop bleeding and he'd pick at it too.

They cleaned it; along with the broken toe nail, it looks like there's a little gash on the toe itself; I think he fell off a toy or perch or something. :(

Per instructions, I'm to keep an eye on him this weekend and go to my regular vet on Monday.

The foot looks a bit swollen, but there was no need for antibiotics.

I've got a few preen toys he can play with; those should be more irresistible than his foot.

He's his antsy little self right now, playing with toys, so I know it's going to be an adventure... he also just grabbed a pellet, took it over, perched on my arm, and is eating it.

9. Awwww, he'll be okay.
I don't think I've ever read about your bird before. Do you have pictures? I DO love birds - my girlfriend has a cockatoo with an attitude. LOL But she's absolutely beautiful - and can speak better than some people I know! :)

I hope that your trip to the vet will get Rusty back in top order!

13. She's started picking at it; it's been bleeding again.
All within the last 10 minutes.

I'm calling them up and having them put on the collar...

15. Thanks - just got home...
The e-collar around his neck is driving him nuts.

I put him on the bottom of the cage; if he was perched at the top, he'd likely fall. :(

Once the toe nail grows in a bit, he'll be fine.

I still remember him before taking him down; he was hiding his injured foot from me. (birds will hide any maladies from their flock mates, thinking they would be shunned. )
