Madge the Palmolive lady has passed away (Jan Miner)
http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/news/local/7977657.htm

Jan Miner, who had a long career on the New York stage but was best known as Madge the Manicurist in Palmolive commercials, died Sunday in Bethel, Conn. She was 86 and lived in nearby Southbury.
She had been in failing health for several years and died at the Bethel Health Care Facility.

From the 1940s to the 1980s, Miner was never far from productions on and off Broadway or on out-of-town stages, from New Haven and Stratford, Conn., to St. Louis. She was also on radio programs, including the popular “Boston Blackie” series as Richard Kollmar’s leading lady in the late 1940s, and appeared in films and in television plays and series.

Palmolive’s commercials featured Miner as Madge, who praised the gentleness of its dish detergent to a customer surprised to find that her hands were soaking in it. She played the character for 27 years.

Meanwhile, Miner appeared in repertory productions at the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford for six seasons.

Janice Miner was born Oct. 15, 1917, in Boston, the daughter of a dentist and a painter. She studied at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and trained for the stage with Lee Strasberg, among others. She made her stage debut in Boston in Elmer Rice’s “Street Scene” in 1945 and in New York as Maria Louvin in “Obligatoo” in 1948.

3. One of the icons of television.
I remember Jan Miner as Madge from the Palmolive commercials quite vividly. I always liked her in that role. She seemed so warm and down to Earth. A very rare quality in a television spokesperson.

RIP, Madge.

Terry

4. I must be getting old--all the icons from my childhood are passing on.
Seriously, my friends and I used to give dishwashing soap manicures (thank goodness mom used Ivory, though!).

May God be with you, Jan.

7. What did the Grim Reaper say to Madge?
"You're soaking in it now!"

What did the Grim Reaper say to Sonny Bono?

"I got YOU, Babe!"

8. Madge had eerie powers!!!
I always marvelled at the way these women just let Madge do whatever she wanted to their hands, only later telling them what they were soaking in.

I sometimes thought it would be fun to have Madge flip out and announce: "That's Hydrochloic Acid you're soaking in!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH"

In all seriousness, we've lost another of those old standy by "TV Icons" from childhood: Mr Rogers, Captain Kangaroo, The Maytag Repairman. Who's next, Mr Whipple or Mrs Olsen from the Folger's commercials "It's Mountain Grown"

9. Madge must have passed on brokenhearted and defeated by...
Pure EVIL! Madge devoted most of her life to making things softer for everyone! Think of the pain and suffering she must have gone through watching as Bob Dole and the rest of those Drug Pushers on TV are selling pills that reversed her life's work! Maybe mankind will benefit from Madge's research after all and be able to soak those 4 hour long monsters Bob and friends have created and soften them up a little!
