Man arrested for stealing Phillie Phanatic Head

Instead, lured by five grand in bait posted by Roxborough car dealer Gary Barbera, the fish walked right into the studio of radio station WYSP (94.1-FM) and plunked down the head himself.

"He brought it in in a black sports bag," said astonished DJ Tommy Conwell. "I looked in, saw green hair, a red hat. Yep, it looked like the Phanatic all right."

Conwell said the bearer of the head was "very tight-lipped."

Station officials said they gave him the reward money. But before Bechtel made it out the door, police picked him up for questioning.

At first, police said, he claimed he'd just "found" the head.

(Last night, a man who identified himself as Bechtel's father-in-law denied he'd swiped the bean. He told the Daily News that Bechtel had found it "over near the Reading Phillies" stadium.)

But speaking to a gang of aspirating reporters yesterday, Detective Stephen Caputo of Southwest Detectives said Bechtel quickly confessed that it was "a crime of opportunity...

2. I think they were ready to go "CodeRed" just to get that head back
It's been in all the media outlets here in the Philly area. YOu would have thunk they stole the Liberty Bell
