Poll question: Favorite Smithereens song? |
|
Okay, I admit it: I love the Smithereens. Ever since their first EPs. If there were a just god in heaven, they and Marshall Crenshaw would be all over the radio instead of Britney et.al.
Any other Smithereenies out there?

1. I voted for Blood and Roses. |
|
But, the Smithereens had some good, straightforward rock tunes. Good to just jam to.

Duet with Suzanna Vega off the first lp. Great song. In fact, that's a damn fine album.

Is it still in print? The first lp. I have it on vinyl and I should probably listen to it tonight. They were on Enigma and when Enigma went under they took a lot of good lps with them. There are still albums I have on my mental "to purchase list" that were on Enigma that I can't find.

When Capitol EMI made its distribution deal with Enigma, it re-released the Smithereens albums. Amazon shows it as still in print.

14. Always loved the Smithereens |
|
Saw them live twice. The first time it was awesome but the second time there were "technical" problems. Lonely Place is a great song. 11, Green Thoughts, Especially For You, Blow Up are all favorite albums of mine.

The Jesus and Mary Chain! Woo Hoo! Darklands was one of the best records EVER! I had a roommate in college who was a big JAMC fan and when he joined the priesthood (GULP!) he gave me all his albums. Man, this thread is bringing back the memories.

I changed my sig line to that when I got into an argument with someone here that "Happy When It Rains" was NOT a song by Garbage!
(Although I do like the Garbage song "I'm Only Happy When It Rains.")

13. I saw the Smithereens in NOLA in 1994.... |
|
the show was really good, but Pat Dinizio was being a total asshole to the crowd. I don't know if he was having a bad day or what. On the upside, Bill Murray was there too, trying to be incognito.
"Green Thoughts" was an incredible album.

Also off 13. That and Maria Elena are my faves from that album. My band did about 4 tunes off it, plus a couple from the earlier album.
And, i'll admit it too! I Love The Smithereens! The Professor

We did Blues B4 & After, Girl Like You, Room Without A View, & Wm. Wilson. I didn't play keyboard on 3 of them. I always felt like it was more important to have two guitar parts. I did play keys on Room. . .
We also used to do Only A Memory (guitar) and Blood & Roses (keys) but we didn't do them even close to the original Smithereens. Actually, we only did Girl Like You pretty close to the record. The rest we made thicker and moodier with a lot more harmonies than those guys use.
But, they are a fave of mine, for sure. The Professor

22. I saw Pat Danizio do the most roadweary rockandroll thing... |
|
I have ever seen. They were once gigging in a typical dive. In the men's room was a sink, trough urinal, and an exposed toilet. No one ever used that toilet for anything other than a place to toss cigarette buts or piss in/on. I walked into the men's room and Danizio was SITTING on that toilet as people came and went. He was unconcerned as he went about his business. Now, that's a roadwarrior.
Voted for "Blood and Roses"

Same bass line, same key. I liked them okay, but truly, this was a monochromatic band.
