Any Christopher Guest fans here? (Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman) |
|
I saw Best in Show last night and thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. Wondering if Waiting for Guffman is as funny.

But I suggest "A Mighty Wind." By far the best one of them all and "This is Spinal Tap"

18. Yes! Anyone who's ever dabbled in community or school theater... |
|
(And that probably includes a good number of folks) will *really* get a hoot out of "Waiting for Guffman."

5. watched Guffman this past weekend |
|
...I've seen it before, and it's still damn funny. I would say Guest's best movie to date is Best in Show--Waiting for Guffman is funny in a more subdued, lower production value sense. I also loved A Mighty Wind, which some people did not.... heck, I got 'em all on DVD!

Spinal Tap was a classic, seen it a dozen times. Also loved Best in Show. Guffman was good (didnt do theatre, so it didn't strike a chord with me), and Mighty Wind, I found to be the least funny of them all. Still amusing, but not as many laugh out loud moments.

I believe the actors did their own music for Spinal Tap. There was a made for TV sequel a few years ago that I missed.
I think Best in Show was the best, mainly because I recently enetered my dog in some shows and saw the whole lunacy first hand. That was the only movie that I actually saw in the theatre for many years. And I wasn't dissapointed. The gay male couple were probably the most well adjusted of the bunch and the funniest since "The Producers." My wife and I still sing "God Loves a Terrier" to our terriers.
A Mighty Wind was pretty good, but again it is for a select audience that remember folk music. Spinal Tap was great, but I got pretty bored with Waiting for Guffman.
The "mocumentary" style may have run its course.

I have had that song "God Loves a Terrier" stuck in my head for like three days and it's driving me absolutely bonkers.

"God loves a terrier yes he does God loves a terrier that's because brown, sturdy, bright and true they give their hearts to you God didn't miss a stitch be it dog or be it bitch when he made the Norwich merrier with his cute little derrier yes God loves a terrier!"
Hell, my terrier could beat Dubya in November. At least he knows he's a dog.

Besides the incredibly funny outtakes, they have a commentary track with the band, in character, acting as if they're watching a real documentary on themselves and complaining about the way they were portrayed. Just brilliant!

10. I love Christopher Guest |
|
I loved Best in Show, and saw Waiting for Guffman on tv a few months ago, also loved it. I love the ensemble performances, the off the wall characters they create.
Haven't seen Mighty Wind yet, but I know I will love that too.
He was on SNL for a while, when it was still great, with Billy Crystol and Martin Short and Harry Shearer. I'll never forget the prison sketch in which Guest played "The Bull".

he used to do bits for National Lampoon radio....includng Flash Bazbo....
If you've ever heard the "Goodbye Pop" album, (and you should go out and find it if you haven't) he did Kip Kaplan's History of Rock & Roll with the Flash Bazbo voice: "Later they went to Hamburger in Gerrrrrrrrrrmany with Tony Sheridan...but he was dead then...Room service for Mr. Sheridan...he's dead in the bed I'll take those rolls please......" as well as other bits.

21. Guest is also great on the classic Lampoon LP... |
|
..."Radio Dinner," on which he both wrote and performed. It's from 1972, and features, among others, Tony Hendra and the late, great Michael O'Donoghue. Guest's "Bob Dylan" on the track "Those Fabulous Sixties" is worth the price of admission.
