1. I'm surprised the Tribune Company spent money
This could be the year, the Cubs could easily have four 20-game winners if Zambrano figures out how to be consistent.

2. they shoulda spent the money to get....
javy lopez or pudge instead, imho. we are not that strong up the middle and while i'm glad to have maddux back, i would have rather seen the trib co spend the $$$ on an allstar catcher. now, god knows, trib co has enough $$$ to have gotten a catcher AND maddux....but that's too much to ask i guess.

4. Meanwhile...the Cardinals DIGRESS...
Seeing your two biggest division rivals spend like drunken Republicans sure as hell is fun. God, if they trade Matt Morris, I'm going up there with a stick!

14. Bastards are trying to save money to pay for that new ballpark.
It's happened elsewhere...can we get August Busch IV to buy the team back? At least the Busch family spent some money on the damned team.

Here's a Q&A on the new stadium. http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/stl/news/stl_news.jsp?ymd=20040213&content_id=636937&vkey=news_stl&fext=.jsp

22. No, they have the best player in baseball
Alex Rodriguez. Unless you think playing left field is as demanding as playing short stop. Not to mention, A-Rod is 28 Bonds is 39. With 7 years left on his contract, the Yanks are going to get 7 seasons of 40-50 HR and 100+ RBI. How many years does Bonds have left? Two?

13. Pitching wins championships
With steroids out of the game (see BALCO indictments), look for pitching, defense and speed to be much more at a premium this year. I predict that there will not be a 45 HR guy and only a few 40 HR guys at most. It will take an ERA under 2 to win the ERA title, and the game will resemble what we saw in early and mid 1980s more than what we have seen over the last 10 years. I am pleased as punch that Mad Dog is back in the house! Somewhere in heaven, hell or Florida Himes is turning red faced, again!

15. Well, plenty of pitchers use steroids
Steroids do not only help hitters. One of the things steroids are great for is the ability to "bounce back" after exertion and muscle injury. Throwing 110+ fastballs and sliders every 5 days puts a lot of strain on an arm. Steroids help to keep you fresh and less likely to get a dead arm.

I think there will be a 45 HR guy (I don't think Pujols is on the juice, Vlad too). The new ballparks tend also to be smaller, so more home runs.

16. Look at Vlad and tell me that
Dude, that guy is too ripped not to be on juice. We'll see what he looks like come may of next year. Your argument about the bandbox ball parks though is well taken.

As for pitchers on steroids, It may help bounce back, reducing inflamation, and increasing blood flow, but c'mon these guys are already on 4-5 days rest and I am still yet to see a pitcher nearly as ripped as any position player (ok, Mo Vaughn vs. David Wells at an all you can eat buffet might get ugly...)

20. ok, maybe Vlad is
Not a starter, but Kyle Farnsworth is pretty ripped. But steroids only make you ripped if you care to lose that much weight. I know plenty of guys who were juiced up and were not "ripped."

24. Not true. Most of your wear on your arm is on tendons and ligaments,
where the stress occurs. I would maybe agree that they help legs bounce back (a big power source for pitchers), but steroids don't help tendons and ligaments. One of the reasons that steroids cause injuries is that the muscles grow way too quickly for the tendons and ligaments to handle.
