Poll question: Ponder the best of Mr. STEELY DAN |
|
It's impossible. It would have been impossible had they never made the last two (or three, even) albums, but hey, I'll give it a shot. Tune banned this time because I don't like it and am crazed with power is Hey Nineteen. A fine song I'm sure, but up with Hotel California in the really, really overplayed department.
This is another poll where I took nominations, but since the fundamental problem is too many good songs for too few slots, this didn't help much. Kudos to the person who nominated Don't Take Me Alive though. I left it off, but it's a perennial favorite of mine as I'm a total psycho.
In the end, I left off everything from the two newer albums, though I'm tempted to smear Reelin' in the Years in favor of Almost Gothic. Ah well, that's what the Other button is for.

"Rikki Don't Lose that Number", "Barrytown", "Through w/ Buzz" (I really like the Pretzel Logic album!) and "Dirty Work", but I've only heard about half of their albums.

"Any World" was on "Katy Lied". "Western World" was a single B-side, and appears on some different anthologies.

13. "Peg" is the best pop song ever. it's what the FM band was desgined for |
|
I love so many Steely Dan songs, but "Peg" instantly sprang into my mind as a favourite song.
Fave album: Aja
Fave songs: Peg, Any Major Dude, Dirty Work, Kid Charlemagne, Deaco Blues, Hatian Divorce, Reelin' in the Years, Everyone's Gone to the Movies, My Old School... too many to list.
I have to say, though, that I prefer listening to the ones which don't feature Michael MacDonald on back-up vocals. I can't stand his voice.

Doesn't Michael MacDonald sing on "Peg"? He sings the word "Peg" while they are hitting the same note.
Peg, it will come back to you
I know what you mean about Michael MacDonald, I never liked hearing his voice. Too syrupy, like weak-ass blue-eyed imitation soul music sung by genuine white guys.

But not to extend he's featured on something like "Bad Sneakers". If I could digitally remove him, I would. But, "Peg" is such a masterpiece, that even "Mister Whiteblues" can't damage it.

Killer guitar solo and harmony vocals that sounded better than ANYTHING Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young ever pulled off.
"Lonnie swept the playroom, and he swallowed up all he found...It was 48 hours till Lonnie came around."
GENIUS!!!!

Whenever I'm radio station surfing, if it's Steely Dan, I'll stop surfing and listen. No song I don't like... And I was thrilled when they actually won a Grammy for "Two Against Nature". For six days, everyone knew them, and then it was "you're the guys who stole Kid Rock's Grammy!"

What a fantabulous, grrooovvyyy jam!
"Dumb luck my friend/ Won't suck me in this time..."
But all mad props to "Show Biz Kids," which perfectly sums up my years (wasted) living in Hollywood:
"They got the house on the corner/ With the rug inside. They got the booze they need/ All that money can buy. They got the shapely bods/ They got the Steely Dan T-shirt And for the coup-de-gras/ They're outrageous.
Show biz kids making movies/ Of themselves, you know they/ Don't give a fuck about anybody else."

41. Agreed - Absolutely my fave SD song |
|
Got a feeling I've been here before Watching as you cross the killing floor You know you'll have to pay it all You'll pay today or pay tomorrow You fasten up your beaded gown Then you try to tie me down Do you work it out one by one Or played in combination You throw out your gold teeth Do you see how they roll I have seen your iron and your brass Can't you see it shine behind the glass Your fortune is your roving eye Your mouth and legs Your gift for the runaround Torture is the main attraction I don't need that kind of action You don't have to dance for me I've seen your dance before Do you throw out your gold teeth Do you see how they roll
Tobacco they grow in Peking In the Year of the Locust You'll see a sad thing Even Cathy Berberian knows There's one roulade she can't sing Dumb luck my friend Won't suck me in this time
Got a feeling I've been here before Won't you let me help you find the door All you got to do is use Your silver shoes A gift for the runaround Use your knack darlin' Take one step back darlin' There ain't nothing in Chicago For a monkey woman to do Do you throw out your gold teeth Do you see how they roll

33. Mr. Steely (or is it Mr. Dan?) lives on Maui |
|
year-round. (That'd be Walter Becker.) Then there are the many, many rock (and country: Travis, Kristofferson, Wille Nelson!) legends who winter over there. One such is -- Michael McDonald, who I just learned used to sing with the Dan! (McDonald's place is right up the road from my friend's, far "Upcountry" near Ha'iku.)
So, if you're still thinking that Hawai'i music consists of eighty-seven different renditions of "Tiny Bubbles", well then, "Back, Jack, do it again"...

42. They were known for their studio albums, NOT live shows. . . |
|
They didn't give many interviews either; however, I still have my old tapes of a several-part interview with their producer Gary Katz. This was around 1979-80, on the radio station once known as WLIR-FM (Long Island, NY)
I remember "Show-Biz Kids", though:
"...Show business kids making movies of themselves, you know they don't give a f**k about anybody else..."
