Cool — 'The Rookie' is on ABC
The movie skipped some important parts from the book, but it's still a feel-gooder. :)

10. He's a pitcher.
Means he throws the ball. In the direction of the plate.

He's good but he's human. He's 6-3 and his ERA's 3.41. He ain't unhittable.

12. Yeah, but
we don't score runs for the Dragon, as you found out on Tuesday.

2. The Charlie Sheen and Clint Eastwood film?
Raul Julia kicks ass! And how can you go wrong with Sonia Braga?

3. No, the Jim Morris biopic
Morris was a pitcher who blew out his arm in the minors, then came back to make the majors with Tampa Bay when he was 35, 10 years after "retiring."

5. It would have been an even better film with Raul Julia

Too bad he had to go and die on us, and right after Street Fighter, no less!

11. Figures
Ricans make crappy pitchers. Stick 'em all in the middle infield, I say.

19. Me too
The whole movie's really about that one bit — when the manager tells him, and when he tells his wife and kid.

I just adore her reaction. :)

21. Only thing I do not like about the movie is the exaggerated sound effect of him pitching the ball
The foley work was overdone.

22. I think they've done that in every baseball movie since 'Alibi Ike'
I hate it too. A good, tight fastball hisses a little bit, but it sure as hell doesn't go sssssssssSHOOOOM!

There's plenty o' stuff I don't like about the movie — mainly, that it completely skipped his first trip through the minors. I wouldn't expect them to go into any detail about it, but it needed at least a mention to explain the reason he was out of baseball for so long: he blew out his arm in the minors.

There're a lot of little things, too — you don't get an engraved name plate on a road locker, especially if you just came up; your name's written on a piece of tape. You don't get your mug shot on the message board when you just got to the show a few hours ago. And if you freeze-frame the DVD when he sticks the first news clipping about the high school team on the board, you notice the hed doesn't go with the story.

Also, Morris didn't strike out Clayton on three pitches; Clayton fouled off one. It seems like a little thing, but I bet it isn't to Royce Clayton, and it wouldn't have hurt the movie one damned bit to be factual about that.
