What's your comfort food?
Mine's ham and broccoli casserole; ham chunks, egg noodles, chopped broccoli, cream of mushroom soup, melted colby cheese on top.

How about you?

are my most favorite comfort foods. I have to really monitor myself when around these foods as I will over indulge quite rapidly.

but there is also a lot to be said for a nice peanut butter and banana sandwich.

4. Mine is cottage cheese and noodles. I know, but it's a Polish thing.
My mother's Polish and this was my favorite meal, as a kid, and I still like it when I don't feel like eating anything else, or need comfort. I remember telling my paternal grandmother how to make it when I was staying with her as a four-year-old... :D

I use fine noodles, cooked, heat them in a frying pan in butter with salt and pepper, add a few spoons of cottage cheese, stir it up and just heat it until it just gets hot and melted. I often take it off the heat as soon as I've added the cottage cheese and a little more salt and pepper, since I don't want it to melt away... Sometimes I add mushrooms. :-)

18. Well, you could just make it for yourself. I do.
And I probably will, tonight, after this thread, LOL, since I'll be on my own. I like most Polish food, particularly pirogies, though I've never learned how to make them myself, since my mother never did, but I can still remember my Babci (my maternal grandmother) slamming and rolling the dough on the kitchen table. I wish I'd learned how to make these dishes from her. *sigh* :hi:

21. That's one thing I've never had. I prefer the savory pirogies.
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 12:26 PM by Rhiannon12866
My Babci (my maternal grandmother) used to make pirogies from scratch with kapusta (sauerkraut), so I prefer those to the potato kind, which I'm told are Russian. My aunt learned how to make them from her Russian MIL, so can make both, but I never learned. *sigh*

But I do remember Babci making these thin Polish crepes (can't think of the word...), with a filling, and my favorites were those made with Lekvar (prune butter). I think that my mother still has a jar in her cupboard... :D

on edit: the name of the crepes are nala schniki. I have no idea of the spelling...:D

The best ones have a lemon sauce on top. The grape leaves are stuffed with a mixture of rice and some seasonings including tomato sauce, and sometimes some meat, sometimes just vegetarian. The lemon sauce on top makes them heavenly.

31. As weird as this sounds for a white guy, Potato and Pea Curry is the comfort food from my childhood
Aloo Mutter with yogurt and naan or pita. My mom discovered when I was little that it was cheap and she figured out that she could slowly raise the spiciness without my sister or I complaining, and eventually got it up to a level that she liked. It's the first recipe she put in my cookbook when I went away to college.

Or daal and rice. We ate a lot of Indian food when I was growing up, because my mom liked it and it was cheap.

My more typically Midwestern Lutheran comfort foods are tuna casserole and korv with cabbage and potatoes, though.

I don't know why it's called that, because there's nothing Chinese about it. Like most comfort foods, it was passed down from my mother to me. It has three layers; bottom layer, cooked hamburg and diced onions. Middle layer, corn. Top layer, mashed potatoes with butter spread on top. 350 oven for 30 minutes, then broil till the top is browned. Very simple and very tasty. Kids love it.

62. if you like corn
if you like corn (I'm wild about it) then the taste of grits will be great. But some people might not like the texture. If you haven't grown up eating them then that part might seems strange at first. It's REALLY 100% delicious with butter and cheese added but I'm trying to be vegan so next time I'll have them with a little corn oil and some vegan cheese :headbang:

I've heard that some people eat them with sugar but I like salt and pepper on mine.

The past few years a lot of restaurants have been serving "shrimp & grits" saying it's a traditional southern food but it really isn't.. maybe in Texas or Louisiana but I lived in the southeast all my life and had never heard of it until a northern relative decided this 'new' Southern delicacy was such a big discovery :eyes: Now a lot of restaurants serve it and people assume us Southerners ate it all our lives.

65. Actually it *is* a traditional Southern food, but
only in the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia. My domestic partner's family hails from Columbia and Charleston, SC, and they've eaten shrimp and grits with gravy their whole lives. Shrimp is a staple of the salt marsh islands and the low country around the coast, because it's cheap and plentiful. I guess it would be more accurate to call it a "South Carolinian traditional food", though.

Just so you know. :hi:

I will not have bitterness about it anymore then!
I do like it (how could anyone not??) but I have issues.. Certain relatives of mine serve it to me like they're giving me ye old soul food from down home, my accent gives them stereotypical ideas x( And they can't appreciate grits any other way, they just like the quaintness of the shrimp/grits combo.

I do not need to connect it with them anymore though.. if I think of you instead then I can enjoy it :hi:

I don't eat it anymore because of my hypoglycemia, except for when I go somewhere and it's served as part of a buffet-like Sweet Tomatoes- then I have a little taste. Brings me right back to about age eight, sitting in our sun filled breakfast room and having lunch with fresh veggies and a big glass of milk.

76. Goop.
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 03:16 AM by Kentish Man
Basically a homemade hamburger helper--fry the hamburger meat, add water and elbow noodles, simmer. Spice with Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning. For Goop Deluxe (TM), add frozen peas. Crazy, but I love it with buttered bread.

Red beans and rice with sausage (also with buttered bread) and pot roast also fill that comfort need for me...

96. That reminds me...
of what my mom calls the turkey and stuffing leftovers from Thanksgiving...Turkey glop. Basically turkey, stuffing, peas and onions, and gravy all heated up in a skillet.

For the worst times, I have to have Cap'n Crunch. My palate doesn't like it, but ooh, it is soooo good. I love me my sticky sweet corn crunchies.

82. Mixed fries.
A place by where I lived (an organic vegan homemade "pub-style-food" restaurant actually.) used to serve mixed-fries. Fries made from a mix of root vegetables. White potatoes, yellow potatoes, sweet potatoes, taro, yuca, carrot, dry-coated onion straws, turnip, etc. Whatever was in season.

The restaurant went under and I still make it at home when I'm having a shitty day. It's effort-intensive and it gets the rage out. I'm a foodie. I love to cook...probably should have gone to culinary school instead of college.

100. I was waiting to see who posted that.....
it's such a Texas thang. Follow it up with an IBC rootbeer and Blue Bell vanilla float. AHHHHHHHH.

The gravy has to be peppery and thick. I can handal skins on the mashed potatoes. Some fresh field corn, fried green tomatoes and ripe tomatoes.

For breakfast....ice cold Pecos cantalope covered in cream gravy, ice cold tomato slices with gravy, biscuts-no gravy. I've taken a liking to cheese grits too.

And I'll travel miles for good BBQ beef ribs, brisket, and sausage (dry).

Texas is not a place for wimps or the undecided. Where else do folks have hot peppers first thing in the morning.

Also potato-cheese pierogies with sour cream and fried onions, and my homemade latkes. OOh, and pasta tossed with melted butter, garlic and good parmesan.

Really, any fatty, savoury, salty dish of carbs does the job.

98. Frito Pie!
http://www.disgruntledhousewife.com/meals/frito.pie.html">Disgruntled Housewife: Meals Men Like: Frito Pie

An authentic Frito pie MUST be served in the bag and eaten with a plastic fork (or better yet, spork). After your first pie, you may make it in a dish and eat it with regular flatware. But if you're a Frito Pie virgin, you gotta do it middle school cafeteria style your first time.

For one Frito pie:

Big Grab of Fritos (Dainty appetite? Use the snack-sized bag)
One cup of chili with beans, canned or homemade* (adjust accordingly for non-Big Grab)
grated Cheddar cheese
Plastic fork
Accouterments (your choice): sour cream, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, pico de gallo, cilantro

Snip across the side of the Fritos bag (an authentic Frito pie MUST be served in the bag and eaten with a plastic fork). Pour in the chili, top with cheese and anything else your heart desires. Then stick the fork into the bag, mix it up into a sloppy mess, and enjoy! More fun that a funnel cake at the flea market!
