I'm sorry, but this just strikes me as really weird... and tacky.

Southlake church offering free fertility treatment

12:00 AM CDT on Saturday, May 31, 2008

By SAM HODGES / The Dallas Morning News

In an unusual approach to service, a Southlake church plans to offer free fertility treatment for a couple struggling to have a baby.

The eleven7 church is taking applications through Friday from such couples, and on Father's Day, June 15, will choose at random from among those seeking help.

The winning couple will get a medical evaluation and, depending on what's needed, will be directed to the Center for Assisted Reproduction in Bedford or the North DFW Urology practice in Grapevine, which have agreed to donate their services.

The value of the service could reach $40,000, said the Rev. Keith Luttrell, pastor of eleven7. In vitro fertilization is among the covered options.

"We wanted to do for people what they couldn't do for themselves," said Mr. Luttrell, whose nondenominational church draws its name from Hebrews 11:7-8 in the New Testament.

1. That is weird
I think the Church would be better off giving money to help a family adopt a child....

2. To be fair,
the services will be "donated" by a fertility clinic; but it still bothers me. It seems like a gimmick to get people into their church.
