Childhood memories revisted: Celtics-Lakers in the NBA finals |
|
I always remember the NBA finals being the Celtics-Lakers every year. It seemed like the whole basketball world revolved around those two teams, which was frustrating to me as a Golden State Warriors fan.
This feels like Back to the 80's Week.

1. So those are CHILDHOOD memories for you???? Gawd, am I ever OLD!!! |

..But seriously, I was having the same sense of Deja Vu. I too wanted Golden State to get a little farther in the playoffs (Do you remember the year they swept the Utah Jazz?) and I thought TMC coulda been like the "Showtime" Lakers (it was bitterly disappointing for Mitch Richmond to make those heinous homophobic remarks a few years ago!).
When the Celtics played the Lakers in the mid-eighties, my friend and I used to invite all the guys over and make piles of nachos. They'd bring their own beer (we're chicks, we drank Chardonnay at the time) and it was just a blast. The wives didn't want anything to do with it, their loss! Magic, Worthy, Kareem, et al were just amazing! But when you watched Bird, McHale, and Parrish and their completely different style you just had to shake your head.
I think the NBA has gone really downhill since then. So here's hoping a little old-school will bring back the spark!

4. Cornbread, Kareem, the Chief, Rambis, Big Game James |

It was more than just the two stars that made those games special.
And the genuine animosity between those two teams was beautiful, in its own twisted way.

5. I was touring, playing concerts at army/marine bases in Okinawa during the '87 NBA finals. |

We watched every game with cigars and Tanqueray and knew we were watching history.
Despite not having a favorite in the outcome, it was a pleasure to see the best basketball I'd ever seen. (and it hasn't been topped since)
