He's eating a little and I am managing to give him his thyroid pill and amoxicillin (which has upset his tummy according to the cat box), but today we got home from church and his fur is just starting to get oily and clump together. This is what happened to dad's cat before his kidneys failed. Hubby does not want to put $500 worth of work into Pretzel if we're going to lose him in a few months. I'm bracing myself for the idea that instead of tooth extraction Friday he might be at the vet for something else. I just don't know what we should do. We won't even be with him. He gets dropped off in the morning and left there for outpatient surgery.
How does anyone make decisions like this?? I just feel sick thinking about it. I spent the afternoon cuddling with him. I plan on being with him a lot this week, just in case...

:(
I don't know your kitty's story - but I have a few possible suggestions. Instead of amoxicillin the last time I gave my cat antibiotic injections. It was MUCH easier than trying to get the liquid down him, and no tummy upset. If all goes well at the vet you may want to (if you're not already) start giving him sub-q fluids for the kidneys. My cat gets them daily - he's in renal failure.
I don't know how anyone makes those decisions. I've been bracing myself for the same thought - but I try not to think about it. :( Interesting about the oily, clumpy fur though - I didn't know that. Thank you for that information - something else for me to be on the lookout for.
My heart's with you and your cat. I'm sorry, I know how hard it is.

3. No offense, but you may want to reconsider that post while there's still time. |

Probably not the right message to send, under the circumstances....

*vibes* and love to Pretzel. Just think of the love that he's gotten and the easy life you've given him.. no matter what happens it's those good things that matter. I hope he'll start getting better.

5. What's wrong with him? And have you tried an alternative vet? |
|
Sometimes a cat is misdiagnosed, or is given the wrong cure. I had an elderly cat (third in my sig line) who was misdiagnosed with a benign form of caner that wasn't. I always go for a second opinion now. Also, beware of chain vets-like Banfield. They often cost 3-4X as much as an alternative or "country' vet.

6. I'm so sorry. I had a scare a couple of weeks ago that my big male |

was going off (crazily attacking) on my smaller cat and I fretted for a week that I would have to give him up. He is unadoptable as he attacks and bites me sometimes. But the cats are getting along much better now. And the big one usually is such a love bug. I feel such relief.
