Do you know how to hitch-hike? Would you ever?
With gas prices the way that they are, I'm just curious to see how many people would be willing to hitch-hike to some places to save a little money on gas.

Do you know how to hitch-hike? Seems fairly obvious, just stick out your thumb. It is an art form however. Any fool can just stick out their thumb, but will you get the ride? There are several considerations to take into account for effective hitch-hiking. Do you think you could do it?

And I would be afraid to even try around here where they drive like maniacs behind the wheel:scared:

3. Those are the rides you turn down.
Plus people's neighbors are probably scarier than anybody you would encounter on the nations highways.

4. I used to hitch hike a lot as a teen
but I wised up and finally bought a car with my boyfriend.

It was fun back then and the people I got rides from were mostly people I knew from school anyways.

5. I've hitched across the country and back alone
Several times. I've been hitching since I was about 13, back in the dark ages of the 70's and the last time I took a long hitching trip was in 1998 when I went from Vermont to California.

So, yeah, I know how to hitchhike - it was my sole form of transportation for a lot of years. Would I do it now? Couple of considerations -

1. I promised my husband I wouldn't. :P (though I refused to promise not to pick up hitchhikers - I know what it feels like to be standing out there)

2. Some areas are harder to get rides in than others. For my purposes - getting to work, getting to school - I'm not in a good area for hitching.

3. Though I've stayed out of serious trouble, I've had close calls. Getting into a stranger's car can be dangerous and I don't advise it. People are better off using a bike or taking mass transit.

7. I used to do it in college - we weren't allowed to own cars until our senior year
Don't think I'd do it now though.

8. Yes... and I have...
and there are probably circumstances where I'd do it again, but it'd have to be a pretty extreme circumstance to get me to do so.

10. I did after I totalled my car
Nice guy, brought me right to my door. But he kept trying to get me to join his church.

But to save on gas? No thanks.

Khash.

12. I hitch-hiked all the time...
...when I was a teenager in the 70s. I'm not sure if it'd more dangerous nowadays or if I just have more sense...lol.

Back then I was a skinny, long-haired, surfer-type.

Now I'm a 46 yr old black-metaler with short white hair.

I'm thinking these days I'd be doing more hiking than hitching, nome sain?

13. I hitched rides all through the 60's and early 70's until too many guys
