2. A while ago I heard Josh Ritter on NPR
and thought it sounded like something my husband would like.

We went to his concert a few weeks ago and whenever we go out in my husband's car we listen to his Josh Ritter CDs and when he does the dishes he's singing along to Josh Ritter songs on his iPod.

3. What do you like?

Try taking a look at my Pandora station "The Eclectic Greyness" linked in my signature below. I have it seeded with a ton of groups that most folks have never heard of. You can also expand the "Artist Seeds" section to take a look at the groups I've put in the seed list.

It loads similar songs in groups of 5, so if you don't like what you hear, skip ahead a few.

4. Wide range of tastes
Indie-rock, singer/songwriter, electronica, downtempo, world, jazz. Basically everything except rap & country.

6. Sweet.

Definitely check out all of my stations below in that case. And set up your own Pandora station - it has suggested many artists that I've never heard of based on what I like. Pandora even provides links on each song for you to buy it from iTunes, Amazon MP3, or Amazon CD. :D

22. Jewel's new CD is as country as she's gotten, but not really country
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 05:47 PM by mvd
I don't like the fact she worked with homophobe John Rich, but the CD turned out well. Here's how I'd rank her CDs:

1. This Way (grade: A)
2. Perfectly Clear (grade: A-)
3. Spirit (grade: B+)
4. Goodbye Alice In Wonderland (grade: B+)
5. Pieces Of You (grade: B)
6. 0304 (grade: C+)

35. I would recommend you check out some of the underground hiphop that's out there.
It's awesome stuff that blows 'rap' out of the water and is a true artform.

5. A few recent discoveries, and my standard recommendations:
Athlete - from the UK. Saw them on TV the other night, and I really enjoy their album "Beyond The Neighbourhood."

The Frames - Irish band led by the guy who played the male lead in "Once." Amazing, amazing writing.

Curtis Eller - Singer/songwriter with a banjo, songs about Abe Lincoln and escaped circus elephants. You really have to see him live to get the full effect. (http://www.curtiseller.com)

Jonathan Coulton - Of "Code Monkey" fame. (http://www.jonathancoulton.com)

65daysofstatic - Instrumental kind-of-progressive rock with unusual time signatures and interesting textures. (http://www.65daysofstatic.com)

Standard recommendations:

Jim Boggia - one of the most brilliant singer/songwriters on the planet today. You can hear his "Live The Proof" in a Blackberry commercial, and that was him singing "Maniac" in the Kia commercial that referenced "Flashdance." (http://www.jimboggia.com)

Stuart Davis - the other brilliant singer/songwriter. Sort of a bubblegum pop/sex/Buddhism/folk-punk thing. (http://www.stuartdavis.com)

Porcupine Tree - progressive rock for people that like intelligent metal, Pink Floyd and the Beach Boys. (http://www.porcupinetree.com)

Mieka Pauley - another singer/songwriter. Easy on the eyes, too. (http://www.mieka.com)

Kevin Gilbert - sadly, no longer with us, but created two of the most perfect solo albums while he was here. Also responsible for all of Sheryl Crow's early hits (until she abandoned him and took credit for everything...I believe you can hear his voice on "Every Day Is A Winding Road"). (http://www.kevingilbert.com)

Mike Keneally - former guitarist/keyboardist for Frank Zappa and Steve Vai. Part singer/songwriter, part guitar shredder, part orchestral composer...Mike can do it all and does it all. (http://www.mikekeneally.com)

TISM - Australian band that may or may not exist anymore. They always perform with masks on to hide their identities (although everybody pretty much knows who they are anyway). Kind of a power-pop/alternative/dance kind of a thing. Probably best known worldwise for "Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me." I also recommend "(He'll Never Be An" Ol' Man River."

Was (Not Was) - Yes, the "Walk The Dinosaur" guys. They're back on tour with all three original vocalists, and sounding incredible. They're allowing taping, and you can find recordings of their shows on the Live Music Archive at www.archive.org.

7. I like the Silversun Pickups.
Probably the first CD of a new band I've bought in several years.

Of course, my interest in them is probably in part because they have a very strong resemblence to the Smashing Pumpkins (without just being a shameless copycat) so I'm naturally drawn to them.

depends on what you might like.

I saw the Flobots last night and was floored. Amazing musicians, good energy, very progressive grassroots message.

I also really dig the last couple of rock albums by Elvis Costello, "When I was Cruel" and "The Deliveryman" - both are great.

What kind of stuff are you generally into? I like a lot of styles, but knowing what you like might help.

And agree on the great lyrics and delivery.

Go there and put in your likes. You'll hear some new stuff, and if you like different genres, you can create new stations and hear lots of new stuff.

:) (it's pandora.com)

29. 808 State - look for their album "Gorgeous", circa 1993, for the songs
"Plan 9", "10x10" (starting at 01:06), "Nimbus", "Colony", "Timebomb", and "Sexy Synthesizer" as being the standouts.

(in track order, that was...)
