I need help. How do you tell someone....
their boyfriend stinks and they need to do something about it?

I have a new room mate, whom I in general adore, and have known for many years. She, however, has a new boyfriend. There have been a few incidents. But right now, my big issue is that he smells. Really, really bad.

I like things to smell nice. Weird, coming from a smoker, but there you go. Bad food smells, mildew smells, etc I just can't deal with, I must eradicate them. And, #1 on my list of smells I can't cope with is overpowering B.O.

This guy. Is the second. Smelliest. Guy. Ever. (in my experience).

He comes over frequently, and I generally just retreat in to the other end of the apartment with an oil burner or some incense (my favorite smells like a mix of a bamboo forest and freshly cut grass... neither here nor there, really). But, last night, it was... intolerable. If I was able to walk, I would have left. Seriously.

The smell filled the entire apartment. I tried to go in to the kitchen just to get a drink, and I gagged. I discreetly asked my room mate to burn some incense and/or open the window. She said sure, and asked "Why, does it smell in here?" I looked at her, dumbfounded, and just said yes. I didn't go in to details.

I don't know *how* to go in to details. I can't believe she doesn't smell it. It's SO OVERPOWERING. Other people have smelled it, and said something. When I had people over on the weekend, I had to basically air out the whole apartment and use three different scented things before I wouldn't be horrified to bring them in. Her room.... I can't go in there. Even if he hasn't been over for three + days, I just can't go in to her room, it lingers so much. I had to buy leather cleaner for my couch because he permiates the leather with his stank.

So, I think pretty clearly, it's getting to a point where something has to be said. Or done. I can't keep spending all this money to de-stink-afy my apartment 2 or 3 times a week, I can't keep hiding in my room with a fan blowing out the door. I can't keep asking hours in advance if he's coming over so I can get everything I need from the other end of the place before he's there.

Honestly, I'm not over-dramatizing. I know that I'm more sensitive than normal to smells like that, but my friend who came to our party a couple of weeks back said something. This friend can't smell anything. He's like, nose blind. He used to DOUSE himself in cologne cause he couldn't smell that it was too much. He couldn't smell the hog plant when we drove past a couple of times. He is not a really smell-sensitive person, but it's the first thing he said to me the next day.

This is a very long story. But, I don't know how to handle it. I'm not sure if there really is a polite way to say "Your boyfriend stinks and I can't cope with his stench anymore". And, even if I *DO* say something, what can I reasonably expect her to do about it?

I don't want to end up pissing her off. Him.... not as concerned about, but I don't relish the idea of doing it either. I'm a pretty straightforward person, I don't usually have that much trouble spitting things out, but this is... hard.

Help? Please?

(I wont post any more details but if you think you need them, you can PM me)

1. Leave a basket of deodorant and other smell-niceners (body washes/whathaveyou) on his doorstep.
Make sure it's deodorant and not a flaming bag of poop though, because that'd just make the smell worse.

6. Part of my fear is though
that he maybe has some kind of...condition that makes him stink. If so, I'd feel like a total douche. But, at the same time, you'd think if he had a condition and knew about it, he'd maybe try to make an extra effort to cover it up or something. I dunno...

15. Find out conditions that make people smell and include the proper medications in the basket as well
:P

2. You just have to come right out and say it.
There is no *nice* way to tell someone they smell. You can offer soap, etc., but really in the end, you are going to have to tell your roommate that her man is a stinkbomb and you can't take it.

I'm sorry.

3. I had a college roommate who stunk...
I used to febreeze everything he touched (and occasionally him) until he took the hint. Then again, I'm a dick.

I'd just say something...not to her, only to him. Tell him "You need to bathe."

10. haha the #1 smelly guy, I did something similar to.
But, then, it wasn't as awkward in that case.

Like I said upthread to primate though, I'm worried maybe it's a medical thing...

7. I think you should approach her about this
and suggest that he see a doctor. Worst case is that he is already using deodorant, etc and he still reeks. Then there is something wrong physically.

There are presciption strength products available for folks who sweat more than the ordinary as well.

I feel for you. BoyMidlo had friends over the other night after playing basketball and I made them all shower before they could sit in my family room. :puke:

8. Yikes.
I had to have this talk with an employee one time... but it was about *her*, not her bf or anything. I just came out and said it.

Good luck.

16. Only talk to him...
ask him about his hygiene habits and suggest a dr. if those are all in line... it's a touchy subject, for sure.

12. I would say a direct approach would be best, tell you roommate about it...
You shouldn't have to live with that stink, and perhaps she can approach him in a way that won't be as offensive. This is assuming she wants too. But he could have something wrong with him that causes it.

14. Yeah, I thought of that
(having something wrong with him, I mean)

If he does, maybe she can make him see a Dr, and he can get something to make it better. Please, god.

17. The only thing I can think of would be some type of gland or hormonal problem...
even then, they could be symptoms of something serious. If anything, approach your roommate with that assumption, she would be more likely to listen and approach him if you think there is a medical problem.

I get this frequently, since I ride the city buses. Honestly, don't people shower anymore? Ugh. x(

23. hmmm....
Like 20 people crowded in to a tiny room without air conditioning on a 95 degree day, who've just been rescued from a desert island, where they've been living without soap for a year.

24. That's weird....does he LOOK particularly unkempt or unhygienic?
I mean, if someone stank that bad, you would expect them to be dirty, or greasy or something. If he didn't, you may be dealing with a guy with a medical problem. Do you know what kind of foods he eats?
