Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 01:57 PM by Cant trust em
Sorry. I just got another e-mail from someone who spelled it "alot". It's a pet peeve of mine.

Thanks for listening (or reading).

10. local newspaper
Had a story about someone who "past away."
I guess their spellchecker didn't catch it.

21. Spell check wouldn't catch that
since "past" is also a word, and spell check doesn't discriminate between contexts.

That's why Dog made copy editors — who are always the first to go in newsroom cutbacks.

Now that I think of it, though, I'd bet that was in a paid obit, and those are usually handled by the advertising department. Most newspapers use "died" in death/funeral notices.

22. this paper doesn't check very well
about ten years ago the buzz around town one day was a secretarial ad that said: "fuck you way to the top." Turns out there were two women, one who wrote the copy and one who checked it. The first lady wrote that as a joke for the second lady to catch, which she didn't. The paper apologized and they were both fired.

25. Again, that's advertising
For some reason (like, say, money), newspapers have never seen the wisdom in putting real editors on the Other Side to catch stuff — and dog knows stuff slips through in ads, especially classifieds.

Friend of mine was a reporter at a small Central California daily in the late '70s. One day he came into work and everyone in advertising was hanging their head while those on the news side were snickering. My friend asked what was up, and someone showed him a large ad for a local clothing store. The banner copy read, "BIG PANTS AND SHIRT SALE."

But they dropped the 'r' from "shirt." :D

33. my old paper once ran an employment ad for a whorehouse
it was supposed to be for delivery and warehouse positions, but apparently the ad rep didn't know how to spell warehouse and, for some idiot reason or another, seemed to have just clicked through spell check without paying attention to the suggested words.

it ran in the saturday paper and the weekend classifieds are printed friday...the poor ACE was on the phone forever trying to get it fixed for the sunday paper but i never found out if it was taken care of.

17. The phrase "a lot" should only be used when talking about

real estate or auctions.
What's wrong with saying frequently, often, many, etc.?
This is part of the "dumbing down" of our language to
decrease thought, (1984 anyone?)

Nope, the evolution of language isn't quite so restrictive, luckily :P

20. I don't have alot of pet peeves, irregardless

-- George Carlin

cite / site - this is one I see a lot online.

birth / berth - this one drives me nuts. I read a lot of sports forums and I am fucking sick and tired of seeing 'my team earned a birth in the tournament.' (No they did not, but your mother gave birth to an idiot.) I've even seen the usage defended as meaning 'new life, born again' in the post-season.

it's / its - I use it as a metric of basic literacy.

I'm sure that more will come to me.
