Insect question! I've got these holes in my fence
They're about the size of pencil erasers, and I can see the rear ends of the creatures digging them, and their abdomens are black.

Could they be bees?

Also, under one of the holes is a long, thin grub. It looks like it got kicked out of the holes. What gives?

Thanks.

7. Well, I took a piece of grass and stuck it in the holes
One of them prompty blocked the entrance with its GIANT black abdomen. The other one buzzed angrily at me.

So we have more information. :P

The giant wasp from Japan...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_giant_hornet

A South American spider-wasp:

Forget killer bees. According to information we've been able to pull together, a Venezuelan lab created a hybrid of a spider and wasp as a form of pest control in 1987. The queen escaped and reproduced into a huge swarm of killer South American Spiderwasps. The spiderwasps have a wingspan of up to one foot and are immune to all known pesticides. They also have a large stinger full of venom and have the ability to eat through walls which renders most buildings vulnerable to attack. The arrival of the spiderwasp means death and destruction to anything and anyone that gets in their way. In just 8 short years, the swarm has continually moved northward. South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and the southern portion of North America have been devastated by the spiderwasps.

13. Carpenter bees
I hate those nasty creatures..but find it amazing that they make the nicest roundest hole..just like a drill. Do you have the male hanging around yet? There's usually a guard bee, he can't sting he's only there to intimidate. They'll get right in your face and stare you in the eyes. The female is the one who drills the holes and makes the home for her kids and from what I understand is the one who can sting.

We had them attempt to make their home in our garage for a couple years.

15. I think thats the one
Carpenter bees can resemble Bumble Bees and get their common name from their habit of boring into wood to make galleries for the rearing of young. They are a wood boring insect are not considered a true structural pest. You will see round holes and a coarse sawdust-like substance called frass underneath the holes. Their holes are usually located on the underside of any wood surface including siding, soffits, overhangs, decks, fence posts, fascia boards and window frames.
