Okay, DUers! The STBE has put the house up for sale in Europe. Check it out
and if you're European, maybe you should consider buying this "stately" house. Yeah, the word "stately" includes the german word "sir" in it. Those people are so... German... :hi:

1. um...
:wtf:

Why is STBE trying to sell your house (in ME) to Germans? Why not try to sell it to...um, I don't know...Mainers?

2. Laughing. What? You don't know my whole life story?
I guess I haven't been PUI lately. Heh.

The house has been on the market in Maine for two years w/no luck though frequent price reductions as the market insists. STBE is German and just spent three weeks in Munich (as is common) and his friends persuaded him it'd be a good idea to advertise over there.

FWIW, his best friend also taught him to iron. Now that he's moved out, apparently he looks unkempt to German eyes.

Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 10:06 PM by Chan790
nobody looks unkempt in an ascot.

Actually, it can't hurt to advertise in Europe. Perhaps an odd question but what are the major industries around there? You might try targeted sales to companies who have need to do business in your city but don't have a presence in your city.

Specifically to companies who do business in your area as cheaper to house personnel than paying for hotel rooms. A lot of the real estate out by where I live is being bought by corporations because it's cheaper to buy a small house than to pay for hundreds of hotel rooms a year in NYC, New Haven, Hartford or Boston for traveling workers and executives (I'm within 90 minutes of all four). Comfier too.

I have no idea how to get in on that, but your agent might.

20. It's in an area where one cannot even have a B&B.
Strange but true. Stephen King lives on the street and I suspect that's the only reason they've restricted it. Zoning is not a big priority in Maine.

Thanks for your comments!

I'm really much more eclectic, but the house is a colonial and I didn't want to mess with that. Next house will probably be an apartment and there will be statuary in the livingroom, as is proper. :P

I hope Stephen King doesn't move... it would be a disaster for the town because we have little else to offer. I don't think he will; two years ago he bought and renovated the house next to his and this year the landscapers are busy at work. He'll probably stay.

Housing prices here are great, but it's not an easy place to make a living.

37. Yeah, he has a tendency to do that
I know GK moved out of his old house (a block away from my apartment) because his neighbors were building a bigger garage, which he claimed would have deprived him of enjoyment of his property.

GK is a bit of a crybaby. He left Minnesota for Denmark back in the 1980s because he said that nobody here appreciated him. He only lasted a few years in Denmark before he moved back here, probably because people in Denmark appreciated him less than did the people of Minnesota.

His owns a bookstore in the 'hood still, though, so I suspect he's still somewhere in town. I know he prefers urban areas, so he's probably pretty close by.

And Steven King better not leave Bangor. He'd be a moron to do so. He draws so much from his environment, he'd be crazy to sabotage that.

I hope you are able to make a move soon. It's very frustrating trying to sell a property in a screwball market like this.

I've thought of the situation this way: the kids, the STBE and I are getting a long, long time to adapt to the divorce and changing circumstances. At the same time, this house instead of being my beloved home has become a burden. That's good, emotionally speaking. :pals:

35. The price in euros sounds so much cheaper
When you say €270,000 instead of $410,000 it somehow sounds more affordable.

But then, my German house is in the Düsseldorf area, and it's half the size of
your place with a third the land, and if I had to buy it today, I'd have to pledge
my grandchildren's lifetime earnings, and we don't even have grandchildren yet!

We know any number of people in Munich for whom our price would be pocket change. Why they'd want a house in Maine however, I couldn't say.

44. If you live in Munich, one of Europe's most popular cities, you'd have a point
But if you lived in Frankfurt, Dortmund, or any of Germany's less popular big
cities, the attraction gets bigger, especially with Portland's proximity to
Mt. Desert Island and Boston. That plus the fact that in Düsseldorf (my neck
of the "Wald") €270,000 might get you a modest condo in town, if you're not too
choosy about its state of repair or its location.
