4. You might want to try Craigslist.
the only reason I mention that is b/c last year I participated in a major endurance cycling event out here in CA called the CA Death Ride. It's up in the Sierras and has been an annual event for 28 yrs this summer. It's become so popular over the years that they've had to resort to using a lottery, as well, to determine who gets in. They limit it to 2800 cyclists. Last year, all the lottery spots were taken by the time I got serious about doing it, but I was able to find somebody easily enough through Craigslist and scored his spot, instead. He had to sign some special paperwork that I submitted, but other than that, it was pretty easy.

Just thought I'd throw that out there, in case it's possible for you to do something similar.

:hi:

I had forgotten about that. I had heard of buying bib numbers (and bibs) but I forgot about that.

Thanks. I will check into it tomorrow.

BTW- swimming is flat out wearing my ass OUT (recouping from tendon probs in my right ankle)

ON EDIT _ I need to get to bed. I am swimming in 5 hours or so.

18. One more thing:
you might have more luck as you get closer to the event, itself. In other words, don't get discouraged if you look now and don't see anything posted quite yet. Hang in there and keep checking back.

For my situation, I scored my lottery spot from another cyclist who'd been injured and didn't have enough time to heal and train, so he put it up on Craigslist about 6 wks prior to the event.

Just keep training "as if" and see what happens.... Good luck!

I'm NOT a big swimmer, so more power to you. :hi:

7. screw wearing numbers.
if you want to run a marathon. find a marathon that isn't about wearing numbers and run it. it is an incredible accomplishment. do it.

i ran the last amateur boston marathon in 1985. i wore no number (with 10,000 others. it was a peoples race back then.) i finished the race at 3:57:xx. whoo hoo!

was i ever in contention for winning a race that the winners would finish in 2:00:00? no. was i some sort of problem to the winners? no. they were on a flight back home when i was turning that last corner toward the pru.

wearing numbers and times and all of that shit pale in comparison to actually doing the deed.

run that marathon. wherever it is. it is and always will be that 26 miles 385 yards that no one can ever take from you.

do it...

8. Congrats!
These days I run for my health and weight control, but I run at my own pace. I haven't even considered entering a marathon, not even 10 years ago when I was in really good condition, unfortunately. But even then, I was a slow runner. Great endurance, but slow.

Have a great time.

12. You can qualify by marathon or 1/2 marathon time (according to gender and age)
or you can be a member of the NYC roadrunners club or you can raise/give money for charity OR you can just pay $11 and throw your name in hoping it gets picked. After the 5th try (years) you are guaranteed acceptance

13. Thanks, I never knew that. I always assumed it was open to anyone
foolish enough to try and run/walk/crawl all those miles.:hi: Well thanks for the education, and sorry you didn't get in. Hopefully you will get to do it next year.

15. the big ones make you qualify
because they have just too many people that want to run.
Boston has some pretty strict time requirements. everone wants to run in that one.
Chicago just lets in the first 40,000 (i think), and closes entry after that.

but lots of smaller ones let in anyone who wants to run. you should try one!

16. With my knees, I would be crippled after running 1/4 mile
I have to stick to low impact activities like cycling and roller blading.

17. Oooh
well I am resting a sore achilles right now. Swimming is HARD!!! but I am flat out dropping pounds daily.

Looks like I am going to do either Richmond 11/15 or Marshall (huntington WV) 11/02 since I will be volunteering on the campaign and since it is local Richmond is most likely.

I am forcing myself not to run until July and just keep swimming every morning-ihnerent in this is the lack of ability to breathe and THAT is tough.

The Marshall one is surprisingly flat

I will check out Milwaukee this afternoon.

GOD do I want to go for a run so bad....wait let it heal...
