Strategies for Keeping cool |
|
Ok so the weather for the weekend is predicted to be hot and humid, very hot and humid and probably some t-storms, first time really for this area this year.
I don't have A/C at home and I typically beat the heat by getting out into the woods or if t-storms are to frequent into a movie theater.
But I have to be stuck in the house, preparing for a move and waiting around to sign some papers. So I may not get to use my typical strategies, except I'll be going out to get some bananas and melons for making some smoothies ;)
Any other suggestions?

I was kinda thinking along those lines. I'll have to be quick with a robe or something because I'm not sure when the people who are coming over to sign some papers are coming though :)

3. An ice cold wet washcloth to the back of the neck will cool you down in no time |
|
I have to work a soccer tournament here this weekend and all three days it is projected to be humid and the 90's (for the first time this year) so I expect a lot of kids coming up to me with heat related symptoms. I plan on keeping a bucket full of ice water and small towels for just that reason

11. or- roll a couple of ice cubes in a bandana |
|
tie it so that the ice cubes are at the back of your neck. a little drippy, but you can always ring it out from time to time.

They are around $100. Just cool one room on the north side of the house, hopefully one that has the TV for watching the baseball game.

10. Cold or cold water where you would put cologne/perfume |
|
Holy shit I can tell you are already impressed
I'll go on
Perfume or cologne is conventionally put on the point of the body that most need to stop stinking
The neck The wrists--this is KEY. Trust me as a runner if you need a quick cool down run cold water over the inside of your wrists you will FEEL the difference
showering a lot helps too.
If, like me, you are at work most of the day take an opportunity to take your shoes off at about midday. that helps I have found.

14. Good call on showers. |
|
Cool showers helped me survive last summer. Windows that don't open = warm as fuck inside.

13. as weird as it may sound... |
|
the trick is to acclimate yourself to being hot.
i hated to sweat when i first moved to my ozark's farm. hated it. head to toe wet all of the time. sweat running down my eyeglasses and in my eyes and all.
hated it.
i was used to another life, in an office, with ac. all cool and whatnot.
but...
in the cabin i put those cheap box fans in windows. to move the air around. my shirts would still be soaked. my eyeglasses would still have sweat running down them...
but.. you wipe it off.
after a while, after being hot for awhile... you don't sweat so much. i think the body just gives up and says "whatever".
i often wonder what it must have been like for the folks who settled this land before me. those that had their little farms here 100 years ago with no fans, or no refrigeration, or any of the comforts i enjoy. no indoor plumbing! my god.
it helps me tough it out...
