Would you consider this management? |
|
I work for a major retailer. I am currently in mid-level store management. Basically a lot of our benefits are decided by rather or not you are "management". (health care, vacatation/ph time, etc)
Now corporate is sending down a message saying next year we may be re-classified from "management" to "leadership" and only upper store management won't be "re-classified". Of course this will mean our benefits get cut signifigantly.
Basically here is what I am responsible for
*Writing and giving performance reviews *Interviewing and hiring people *Writing and delivering correction action *Running a work center in the store, and making decisions about how that workcenter operates and how things are exectued *Giving instructions to others in order to make sure everything gets done *Calling outside support in order to fix equipment when it breaks *Responsible for making sure employees get breaks/lunches *Supervising exmployees to make sure they are doing what they should be
There is more, but wouldn't any rational person describe this as management? Can they actually just say "Oh you do the same job still, but now you aren't called management. Enjoy your benefits reduction." I am in a "right to work" state, so I know there isn't much worker protection, but can they actually just do this legally?

1. IMHO, interviewing and hiring and supervising employees is management. |

2. I think that would be management according to the "reasonable person" test |
|
(I.e., I call myself a reasonable person and I say it's management.) This made-up category of 'leadership' sounds like another example of using bullshit corporate jargon to make people feel important while actually hosing them (cf "guests," "team members," etc.)...

3. short of quiting there isn't a heck of a lot you can do about this |
|
They could have just as easily kept your title and cut your pay or benefits. Your only real recourse is to quit (it's possible you could collect unemployment, since they are cutting your compensation while keeping your work the same).

4. Leadership seems to be a euphemism for cutting your benefits. Doesn't seem fair to |

5. HR departments are evil, but they aren't stupid |
|
Especially at major companies, they don't pull shit like this before they've made damned sure they're within the law — which, of course, favors owners.
Such laws seriously need to be changed. "Right to work" means "We have the right to fuck you over as long as you work for us."
