My grandmother said they made diapers. Sewed them themselves.

She was born in 1898.

35. women didn't have as many menstrual cycles, in most cases
women breast fed, which creates hormones that suppress the menstrual cycle. If the avg. female breast fed for 2 years, as she was weaning the child she start to have periods again. Then she may have been pregnant again within a few months and wouldn't have a menstrual cycle during that entire 9 mos, then give birth and breast feed... so out of 3 years, a female may have had only 6 periods or so.

women died in childbirth regularly, too, or lost their babies early.. which would restart the cycle above.

afaik, the thing now is this idea that women didn't naturally have as many periods in a lifetime as they do now.

which tells you nothing about how they handled it. I know from a friend of mine, whose grandmother was a doctor in Poland before wwII, that women who had "prolapsed uteri" - when the uterus collapses and falls into the vagina - were "treated" by using a potato to keep her insides inside... at least where she lived.

41. women fixed the issue a looooong time ago
http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/users/01/sarahk/hers/school/tampon.html

The ancient Egyptians fashioned disposable tampons from softened papyrus. The Greek physician Hippocrates, writing in the fifth century B.C., described another type of tampon, which was made of lint wrapped around lightweight wood. Elsewhere, women improvised from the materials at hand: in Rome, it was wool; in Japan, paper; in Indonesia, vegetable fibers; in Equatorial Africa, rolls of grass.
