Email: first hand account of the SF City Hall scene.....
Cannikin, this is what is going on today at San Francisco City Hall. At least
that is what our eye witness has observed today.

As I mentioned I hadn't been to City Hall since Sunday. I seldom drive
a car downtown and riding a motorcycle in the rain is no fun for me
either. And it's been rainy here since Sunday afternoon. This points
to the added discomfort of those undeterred folks lining outside City
Hall, seeking justice and making history.

I zoomed down there on my beloved motorcycle, parked and walked the
area. It looked about the same as the weekend only smaller and more
subdued. The line outside was .75 of a block. A city dude was making
an official couple count, so I followed him to the end of the line.
The count was 91 couples with as he said "about a 1% chance of getting
inside today."

Inside was an equal line at the City Clerks office.

I enjoyed the two bears who were approaching the Clerk's counter. They
were dressed in identical red and black plaid lumberjack jackets—just
like my own though I'm hardly a bear.

The joy of the couples along with the cheerfulness and helpfulness of
the city employees and their volunteers was almost palpable. I went to
the second floor, passed the Mayor's office and walked down the
palatial grand staircase (with no applause) where at the top the
ceremonies were occuring. A couple was walking up. One said to the
other, "I love this City." That summed it up for me (see next
posting).

Justice and history proceeds a little more quietly in San Francisco at
least momentarily, but quiet has always been just momentary in San
Francisco.

4. got this one last night from the same person...
Good Morning Cannikin,

Thanks for sending me the email in which Schwarzenegger said to stop the marriages. Gerry is a guy who lives in SF and has been giving us an eye witness to what is taking place there. This is what he had to say about the Gov trying to stop the marriages.

(This was generally expected and treated with a yawn. I didn't even see it mentioned in this morning's Chronicle. What did capture the headlines was Bush's inanities which I generally expected and treated with a yawn.)

So I am assuming the civil disobedience is still going on. That is what this is all about anyway. Change always starts with the little people - us.
