Doggy Behavior: What Is The Criteria For The "Perfect Spot"
On cold days its frustrating... but most of the time is hysterical to watch my little Mitzi sniff every square foot of the back yard looking for a "perfect" spot to go.

Whether it's #1 or #2, she's so intent on investigating as many possibilities as possible before FINALLY settling on the same area of the yard she normally goes in.

Is she looking for a spot that's already been used? (So as not to foul up the rest of the yard?)

Is she looking for a spot that HAS NOT been used? (So that she can even-out the smell?)

Is she looking for ENEMY marks?

I don't know, but I've always wondered. I can tell when she's almost found the "perfect" spot because she changes directions more frequently (like she's zero-ing in) and she gets this panicky walk where her legs start to bow-out (like she's preparing to squat) yet she keeps walking even though her bladder is saying "HERE! HERE DAMMIT!"

3. On Snow Days... And Rainy Days She Is Much Quicker.
No sniffing, no finding the perfect spot. Outside, squirt, back inside... 20 seconds.

2. Well, remember...
Doggies have 25 times more olfactory sensors than we do. I understand they can sense odors at concentrations 100 million times lower than we can.

So, really, who knows what she's smelling! Imgaine what you'd see if you had 50 eyes! :D

4. Ok, Allen
This is just weird.

I have been trying to think of a tactful was to ask this question for like...3 or 4 days now. :D (Shortbus can corroborate this. ;))

Thankfully you did it in a much more *mature* fashion that what I was able to come up with. But really, it's just too funny; I know the dog has to go, he's doing the wiggle-pee-pee dance in front of the door, then when he goes out it's another 2 minutes before he finds the right brown-patch-of-yard-that-looks-exactly-like-every-other-brown-patch-of-yard.
Wtf is he sniffing for? It's the same stuff that was there the last time he went out a couple hours earlier. I mean, it's not like we switched yards on him or something...:wtf:

:D
