1. I'm taking care of two listserves,
both of which are related (unofficially) to my own union. They're both hosted at http://speakeasy.net The software package that they use is Majordomo, which works very nicely, and includes a nice web-based archive. Speakeasy, literally across the street from me, is nation-wide, and operates a highly acclaimed DSL service. Their 24x7 technical support is first rate.

That's not quite what you were inquiring about, but if you want the "full package" (host & software), you might give them a call. In addition to doing well commercially, they have what is called a Social Conscience and they do much for the local community. (Also; a few years back, I attended a Chomsky lecture at Olympia with the Speakeasy owners).

2. I'm partial to ezmlm myself
It does have one big drawback -- it only works with qmail. Good for me, it's the MTA I use.

I tried majordomo before, and it did work just peachy. Do you have an entire machine at your disposal? Or, as it seems, two?

3. "Do you have an entire machine at your disposal?"
I don't have the tech background to know what's actually Under The Hood at Speakeasy, but I very much doubt it. But conceptually, I certainly have Virtual Machines for each one.

Having been personal friends with the owners of Speakeasy from the time they started up several years ago, they're hosting it at a very reasonable monthly charge. But if the proposed listserve is liberal/progressive related, I think they would try to be as accomodating as possible. I got the impression that these were the first listserve they had hosted, and they were curious how it would work out. But there were NO glitches or problems from Day One, and the contact person has been very supportive (I needed that!)

5. One of the many things they may be doing is
Offering virtual Linux machines on an IBM S/390 (through VM?). Boy, I wish I had the chance to work with one of those beasts!

6. So they're something like this?
http://www.linode.com/

I only knew Speakeasy previously because they host rpmfind.net.
