Movies on IMDB's Top 250: How many have you seen?
The link:

http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?tt0111161

I have seen 74.

(1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 36, 42, 51, 52, 53, 58, 59, 65, 69,, 76, 91, 92, 98, 99, 104, 105, 106, 110, 111, 115, 120, 124, 131, 132, 133, 135, 144, 147, 152, 153, 156, 157, 159, 169, 174, 175, 181, 183, 190, 199, 201, 205, 209, 210, 232, 235, 236, 237, and 243. You don't have to list them all if you don't want to.)

Any on there that you don't think deserve it? Any unfair exclusions?

I wasn't sure about a few of the foreign ones, as i didn't want to stop counting long enough to read them thoroughly, lest I lose track, which I did 3x :P

3. that's a little hard to figure out
I have to double check some of the titles and make sure it's the version I saw. For instance, I was sure I had seen this one until I clicked the link and found out it was a different movie than the one I saw. :D

6. 99.
That may not be entirely accurate since I didn't double check anything to make sure I saw the same version, and there were a few I didn't count even though I think I saw them, but can't really remember.

10. If we're only counting the ones I've seen completely...
2, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 19, 20, 22, 24, 29, 31, 33, 36, 37 (proof that Natalie Portman can act, for those who have only seen her in Star Wars), 44, 47, 48, 52, 53, 58, 61 (man is THAT one a bit fucked up... all my life I wanted to see Jennifer Connely get naked, and when she finally did it was such a fucked-up scene that it wasn't the slightest bit erotic), 64, 70, 76, 78, 81 (still funny to this day), 82, 83 (I made it aaaaaaall the way through that movie without crying... until the very end.), 92, 98, 99, 103, 104, 105, 106, 111, 115 (a classic), 117 (this movie sodomized my frontal lobe. Total mindfuck), 118, 122, 123, 124 (great first date movie!), 125, 129, 131, 137, 144, 147, 148, 150, 153 (STFU Donnie), 156, 159, 178, 181, 182, 185, 186 (and I have the soundtrack too!), 190, 196, 197, 198, 199, 202, 227, 232, 235, 236, 237, 240 (Natalie Wood was kinda cute in that one), 246 (lovely cinematography, intense ending)... and it looks like that's all. Lemme count 'em up.

I got 70... did I count that right?

12. No "Tokyo Story." No "Soy Cuba." No "Au Hasard Balthazar." Who are they kidding.
Their list is laughable. At least they did manage to get "Ladri di biciclette" on the list, but all the way down at #109, when it should be around #4 or #5.
As far as ones that did make it which don't deserve it... Pulp Fiction, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, The Departed, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kill Bill 1 and 2, The Big Lebowski, Snatch - all of them taking up space which could have been occupied by far more deserving films.

19. well, the weighted rating works against films that not as many people have seen/rated
Edited on Mon Jun-09-08 07:50 PM by fishwax
Movies have to have at least 1300 votes before they can be included in the list, and then the average rating is weighted based on how many users have rated the film. Tokyo Story, Soy Cuba, etc. have been rated by relatively few, and so even though the average ratings for those films have been high, the WR has pushed them off the list.

23. I mostly agree - I thought it was horrible
I do however think that The Big Lebowski deserves a spot, because 1. it's funny as hell, and 2. it's had a cultural impact in a way that the crap movies you mentioned haven't.

Obviously the people who voted on these movies are largely very young, complete idiots, or both. Probably 1/2 of the movies on the list are from the last ten years. ... and, even though I've never seen it, I somehow doubt that Toy Story 2 is better than Harold and Maude, which it is above on the list, or Night of the Living Dead, which isn't on the list.

25. It seems heavily slanted towards more recent films.
I have nothing against "The Big Lebowski" or the people who like that film, but it was a disappointment to me. I'm guess I'm just resentful that films like that are on the list while most of my own favorites are nowhere on it.

A lot of my favourites aren't on there, but lots of them are also weird zombie and sci-fi movies, so I'm not that surprised. I'm more bothered by the complete crap that's on there than I am by the lack of any one thing in particular.

There are lots of classics that aren't there, but I would rank "Henry and June" right up there with some of the best movies I've seen, also "Sid and Nancy", and "The Women".

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, part of 10 (I really . . . REALLY tried and really want to see The Seven Samurai . . . but my body just DOES not allow me to. I can drink 8 Red Bulls, ingest a Vivarin/NoDoz/Jolt cocktail . .. doesn't matter. Glacially paced B/W movies are like Nyquil no matter what :( ), 11, 12, 14, 16, 17, 18, (there's the first undeserved rankings: ALL the LOTR movies. I mean, COME on), 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 28, 30, 31, 32, (while healing from my vasectomy!) 33, 34, 35 (the fact that Taxi Driver is ranked this low is bullshit), 36 (ANOTHER undeserved. I still don't get WHY people beat off over "American Beauty", I really don't.), 37, 39, 40, 41, 42, 46, 47, 48, 49 (Lives of Others is a very underrated movie. Check it out), 51, 52, 53, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 61, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 76, 80, 82, 87, 88, 91, 92, 93, 95 (GREAT movie), 98, 99, 103, 104, 105, 106, about to watch 109, 111, 114, part of 116 (again . . . couldn't stay awake), 117, 118, 119, 120, 123 (OVER-RATED!), 124, 125, 127, 128, 131, 132, 133, 135, 137, 140, 144, 147, 150, 151, 153, 154, 156, 158, 159, 160, 161, 166, 174, 175, 181, 182, 183, 185, 186, 190, 191, 193, 196, 201, 202, 205, 209, 210, 213, 218, 223, 227, 232, 235, 236, 242, 246, 248, 249, 250

Soooo . . . . 131. I think that says a lot about our library, which contains about 90% of these, believe it or not.

Some of them I just couldn't remember. I found it amazing that a large number of the movies on the list are from the last 10 years. Most of them on there that I've seen are either complete crap or just not that great. I think most people have just never seen a good film, or very few.

Obviously the list is dominated by American films or by other films that did well in the US, and there are certainly a few films that I'd never place above excellent outings like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (as perhaps expected from a William Goldman script, it's got to be one of the most perfectly written screenplays ever filmed), but these lists are never perfect and rarely close to a good stab at objectivity.

30. 107. What's surprising is how many I have NOT seen.
Some real classics on that list too, I'm afraid

33. All but 16. (I think, I counted the ones I didn't see, not vice-versa)

So it might be higher or lower.

I used to proctor a campus foreign language lab and I saw a lot of them there. Also took "Propaganda and Culture" and "Political Film in America", both of which were excuses to watch movies for a class.

Refusing to watch Star Wars or LOTR also knocked down my score.

35. I have seen 43 of them
They should give the English translations of some of the films listed. I don't know if Spirited Away is on the list but it deserves to be. I hated The Big Lebowski and The Graduate and thought Forest Gump was a bit too annoying to be included as one of the great films.
