Shell station in Redwood City, Calif. selling regular at $4.99 |

It isn't selling much of it, though. :P Video: http://cbs5.com/video/?id=35111@kpix.dayport.com

I mean at what point are people going to have to start quitting their jobs because they can't afford to drive to work? For a lot of folks carpooling and public transit are not an option. I know we need to get off the petroleum teat, but I really hate being fleeced to do it.:grr:

In my area, 2 hour commutes are common. Then put a $500 to $1,000 price tag on a 4 hour round trip commute, people are gonna start losing it.

that's part of the problem right there. Even if they can't do anything about it now.

People moved out to the San Joaquin Valley to be able to afford a house. Now, between the cost of fuel, wear and tear on both body and vehicle due to the long commutes, a lot of those folks want to move closer into the Bay Area. Unfortunately, with the added burden of the real estate crash, selling their homes is difficult at best and impossible in some areas. So some people who really can afford their home are walking away from it out of frustration. It's going to take a long time for that region to recover.

35. Which is part of why Stockton leads the planet in foreclosures |
|
Nah, I don't have a link. It was on the news a couple weeks ago.
Same thing's happening in Hollister. On those many nights I can't sleep, I hear the commute begin around 4-4:30 a.m. Techies bought here in the '90s, when the place doubled in population, and turned it into a walk-in closet community to the bedroom communities of Mortgage Hill and Gilroy. Now the McNeighborhoods they moved into, which didn't exist 15 years ago, are dotted with foreclosures.
The world runs on oil — or, it doesn't.

37. when everyone was moving to Stockton and Antioch |
|
I moved just outside San Francisco, giving up a little space in the process in order to be closer to work and friends.
It was worth it then, with cheap gas, for tangible and not so tangible reasons.

27. Those 2 hour commutes are the reason the outer fringes of the area have tanking real estate values. |
|
It's no longer worth it to have a house in Tracy or Fairfield and commute to SF or Sili Valley. The higher gas prices go, the worse it will get out.

I've heard about entire neighborhoods in some areas virtually vacant. Some builders have shut down developments, leaving vacant lots. It's pretty ugly out there.

8. ...and nationalized health care |
|
people who cite how expensive gas is in Europe and Canada often neglect to consider *why* it's so much higher than ours - taxes, that go to support things such as health care.
Still think it's a valid comparison?

36. Yeah, but part of that $5.08 makes up for our OoP insurance costs - |
|
I'd be happy to pay $5 a gallon if it also paid for my required state auto liability and some of my health insurance. I pay over $500 out of pocket for both each month; $65 for auto, $475 for healthcare. At $250 a month to fill up twice at $5, but we get to drop the extra $560 a month insurance payment. Hmmm. It's all a matter of balancing the checkbook and whether or not the money I'm spending is actually worth something to me, or if it's just a matter of some CEO picking my pocket.

16. I bought gas today at $3.89 a gallon |
|
I also bought it on Saturday at $3.89 a gallon, but when I dropped my kid off at his mom's house today I saw $4.09 and said to myself "Self, buy gas when you get home!" :-)
It's usually 10 cents a gallon cheaper where I am than by her house on any given day, so at least I have that going for me.

20. If gas prices remain where they are... |
|
... I'll be paying about $8.70 a gallon come end July.
I'll be in England then but still... nearly $9 a gallon. Ouch.

|
For the past two weeks, I've been going to all the $3.99 and below stations, but they've become less and less as time has gone on. I think there are no more left, although I still have half a tank from last week.
