K&R this Post - It's Patriotic! You Commie Bastards! Pick your cliche'!
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 12:52 AM by Gilligan
Post your favorite cliche'

Then Recommend.

I think we need to be seen by the rest of DU and we need to have a lot of Recommends to let Skinner know we are the silent, huddled masses of the DU yearning to be free... We are the homeless, tempest tossed....

We too must be taken seriously.

We are the spine of this place. We are the world. It Takes a Village. And any other over quoted thing you can think of.

Please ... DO IT FOR THE CHILDREN

1. I'll start.
"I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I will ask every member of my government to become involved. The old ideas are new again because they are not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in."

—George H. W. Bush, 1988

5. Daddy Bush on atheists
"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God." -- George H. W. Bush, to American Atheists' reporter Robert Sherman in 1987, while serving as vice-president

17. How about our "buddy" Joe Lieberman saying
that freedom of religion does not guarantee freedom FROM religion. Said while running with Al Gore.

18. About a year ago
I started a thread asking DUers to explain Gore's choice of Lieberman as his running mate. It was when a brazillion people were saying he was going to enter the race for President... A lot of interesting thoughts were in that thread.

Ah -- I found it:

32. One of my pet peeves
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; ...

Sounds like the definition of a secular state to me. Sounds like a wall between church and state to me, blocking interference in either direction.

The phrase separation of church and state is generally traced to a letter written by Thomas Jefferson in 1802 to the Danbury Baptists, in which he referred to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution as creating a "wall of separation" between church and state. The phrase was then quoted by the United States Supreme Court first in 1878, and then in a series of cases starting in 1947. This led to increased popular and political discussion of the concept.

this one....

Not cliche' at all.

Just fucking scary.

And I am an atheist - I guess I can't be truly patriotic unless I have an imaginary copilot.

27. Yeah
I am also an atheist (and an agnostic) so I tend to notice things like my president telling me that I shouldn't be a citizen.

Googling for bush atheists citizens & patriots will reveal hundreds of thousands of hits.

14. A sad one that relates to our soldiers in Iraq, but is recited over and over again:
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 08:46 AM by PeterU
"They're fighting for our freedom."

I wish it was true, I wish there was something noble they were fighting for, but as much as I hate to admit it, it just isn't true. Bush's sick venture to Iraq has nothing to do with our freedom, and he is wasting lives (American and Iraqi) in the process.

Our soldiers are serving their country, and I do have the highest respect for that. However, their country isn't serving them by sending them off on a junket that has nothing to do with "freedom." That is why I cringe whenever I hear that phrase relayed to Iraq.
