Those born in 1989
Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of this year’s incoming freshmen. Here’s this year’s list:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1989.

———— ——— ———

They are too young to remember the Space Shuttle Challenger blowing up.

Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

The CD was introduced the year they were born.

They have always had an answering machine

They have always had cable.

They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

They can’t imagine what hard contact lenses are.

They don’t know who Mork was or where he was from.

They never heard: “Where’s the Beef?”, “I’d walk A mile for a Camel”, or “de plane, Boss, de plane.”

They do not care who shot J. R. And have no idea who J. R. even is.

McDonald’s never came in Styrofoam containers.

They don’t have a clue how to use a typewriter.

21. That's when I stopped reading "the list" - I bought my first CD player in '84
A Magnavox, which I still have (still works, too).

3. I am one of these, and these three are wrong:
They cannot fathom not having a remote control - Unless you have a very old TV.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave - I've had camping popcorn before...
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws - I beg to differ.

11. My daughter was born in 1990, and starts college this fall.
Edited on Tue Jun-10-08 12:26 PM by MrsGrumpy
She knows how to use a typewriter and has feared the dreaded Jaws while swimming. We did not have an answering machine or cable until she was 7. And, on edit, I often make popcorn without the benefit of a microwave. Either in a pan, or Jiffy pop or air popped.

16. CDs came a little earlier than 1989
When I was sitting alert in the military in 1986 or maybe 1987 we had a navigator with a CD player. I had a CD player in my home when my daughter was born in 1989.

First album I heard on a CD? The Joshua Tree. First CD I owned? Talking Heads "True Stories."

Guess I'm showing my age.

I didn't get around to getting a CD player until about '95. But, then, I'm always about ten years behind the times when it comes to technology. :)

18. Whoever you got that from is recycling an old list.
Beloit didn't do the "mindset list" thing when I was there, it started around 1999 or 2000. But this has NOTHING to do with any list they may have produced (unlikely, as frosh don't get on campus till August) for the incoming class.

CDs were introduced in '82, I think. In any case, WAY before 1990. And the actual date of the introduction of the CD was reflected in the actual mindset list that came out 7 or 8 years ago.

Google "beloit college mindset list." That'll get you the most recent one. Which won't be as fun as they were a decade ago, when I was fresh out of school. ;)

23. They don't remember the Berlin Wall
And when right-wing loonies accuse us of being "kommanists," they have to ask
someone WTF a communist is.

I was in Germany the night the wall fell. My wife (who is German) and I just stared
at the TV screen asking each other, did you hear what I think I just heard? Only the
most significant even in German history since the fall of the Third Reich.

I distinctly remember getting my first CD (Led Zeppelin "The Song Remains The Same" 2-disc set)in 1987 for HS graduation.

Wiki says they've been commercially available since '82.

Besides, as some have already noted, the kids starting college now were born in 1990. Your list is a year late. :P

37. a lot of these are BS, as previously demonstrated higher up
they pretty much recycle the same list each year.

Especially the one about cable, answering machines, etc.

Why wouldn't they know about jaws? everyone's seen jaws

They might as well start the "durr, what's a record?" crap. Anyone over the age of ten knows what a record is, even if they've never played one.

And, I know who J.R., and who shot him. And I still don't give a shit ;)
